I made a first buy in rubies. I can't find the old image-insert function, so I hope this works:

It is one carat, unheated, from Africa, after discounts I paid just over $4k for the stone. Considered learning material before I venture into serious sizes or pigeon blood Burma.

I will make in hand photos next week.

Oh, how exciting! Rubies are so glowy and spectacular. Any big plans for setting it?

It is very glowy! What do you mean by learning material though?

No settings planed. Just collecting, so far.

Chatoyancy, I will not run destructive tests on it, don't fear, but I meant that I want to learn about rubies before I buy big league stones.

that's gorgeous! looking forward to more ruby posts from you. :)

Your ruby would look lovely in a pendant!

Wouldn't it look small? My wife is 182 cm (I dunno what that is called in US).

She is tall. If you put a diamond halo around it, that would work. I think rubies look best set with diamonds anyway. I don't know. It's just a suggestion.

Wow. That's gorgeous. I hope you post pics, when you get it. I'd love to see more on this one.

Sure! Will do photos next week, together with the hot pink that was recut.

Can't wait to see them - especially the hot pink re-cut! :D

OK. Me and my wife have struggled mightily to get the ruby to look on photo as it does in, how you say: IRL? It appears ruby is even more difficult to capture than sapphire. In the sun it is almost violet-purple-red on the camera. I found the best presentation indoors, with sun through the window but indirectly on my old hat's rim, a grey felt fabric, but it is all too shaky. I have also added the images that do NOT really show what the eye sees, just for info. ruby on hand in sun - Copy.jpg ruby on hand in sun violet - Copy - Copy.jpg ruby on hand indoors - Copy.jpg ruby on hat indoors - Copy.jpg ruby on hat indoors 2 - Copy.jpg ruby on leather indoors - Copy.jpg

I understand how hard it is to photograph rubies. Some of my pieces photograph as pink but IRL they are not pink at all!

Yes, and so deep red.... I might have to change my name to 'normanintheskywithrubies' in some future. :D

It still looks beautiful even though it's not showing it's true color in photographs.

Or normanintheskywithcorundums to cover both rubies AND sapphires :D

Burmesdaze, yes, good idea, perhaps I should go straight to normaintheskywithcoloredgems....
I'm already peeking at emerald and would love to have a cat's eye.....

Uh Oh! ;)

Another thread bump. Did you decide on a setting? Indeed, it is almost impossible to capture a ruby's real color and personality in a photograph.

No setting here, yet, puh! I started as a pure loose gem collector a few months ago, no more a year now, but my dear 2nd half is already pushing in and getting me to set the other hot pink I had recut.
