I got to drool over this 2.48ct (not sure about various other specs) heirloom diamond in person today. It belongs to my an old friend of mine whom I’ve known for over 20 years and now lives overseas (don’t you love the friends you see once every several years and just pick up back where you left off?). Her grandmother, who was married in 1940, was originally engaged with a diamond chip ring. Many years into her marriage, once the children were grown and they could afford to upgrade, my friend’s grandfather upgraded Gaga’s ring to this 2.48ct beauty, which was then passed down to my friend’s mother, and again to my friend after her mother passed away. She wears it on her right hand, and it still sits in the original setting, which she’s been thinking about changing out but still hesitates for sentimental reasons.

Wanted to share this beauty with some folks who would appreciate it!

Very COOL ring, any idea of the year it was bought?

Very nice heirloom!

It reminds me of the round brilliant diamond I got from my mother that her grandmother got later in life, but it was only 1 ct. I had it recut because diamond cutting standards back then weren't exactly what we are used to now.

I personally would reset the diamond and get a round gemstone to set in this setting. An aquamarine or garnet wouldn't cost a lot and she could still wear the ring occasionally. Maybe her grandmother's birthstone would be nice, as long as it's not diamond (or ruby or sapphire)! lol!

I don’t know (and actually thought while writing this that I should have asked my friend before she left today), but I would guess in the ‘70s. I’ll see if she can get back to me on that!

That’s a really cool setting.

LOVE your ideas, as always, DS! I was hoping you would have some opinions on this!

HI:

Very pretty! I adore the "organic" setting!

cheers--Sharon

It is beautiful! The setting is very interesting and cool, but I like DS's idea of resetting the diamond and putting a colored stone in the original. A garnet would look lovely with the yellow gold. Thank you for thinking of your PS diamond-loving friends!

The setting looks very Gilbert Albert, who I love! It reminds me of a coral reef/anemone.

It is beautiful!

If only I had family who left me diamonds! It’s stunning!

I love the original setting, it’s so cool!

Thanks for the compliments, everyone! I just found out from my friend that I lied to everyone — that setting is *not* the original, and my friend actually bought it from a local jeweler in central Texas in 2011 (when she inherited the original ring and wanted to set the diamond in a setting that was her ring size). She’s not sure of the designer. The stone was from a platinum set that her grandfather had made for his and Gaga’s 25th anniversary in 1965.

i think the setting is cool, kind of a gold nugget design, but nicer.

VERY cool setting - reminds me of coral! I'd get a turquoise cab and put in it!

beautiful ring full of sentimental feelings, but perhaps she would like to modernize it? maybe her grand wouldn't mind? it has a 70s vibe to me btw. I have a ring my dad bought my mom and it's old like the 50s and I just can't pull out the little diamonds to make something.. too many memories.

Such an interesting setting. I love it! Thanks for sharing.
