There's a story to this one!
This is a 4.15ct certified copper bearing Paraiba Tourmaline, bought loose. I loved the gemstone but not the very large window. I toyed with the idea of having it recut but it's sooooooo shallow that I would have lost nearly 3ct in the process - not to mention a huge chunk of value as well! I just couldn't justify that (and TL let out a huge sigh of relief when she found out I wasn't going ahead with a recut)!
So, I wondered if I could hide the window a bit. I ordered a setting and it had a semi basket under the head. When it arrived .......... no semi basket just an empty open space. So I took it to my jeweller and asked if he could add a basket. After much "ummming" and "aaaaaahing" he said that it would be difficult and probably too costly. So I asked him just to open the claws, pop in the stone and let's see what happened (without actually setting it). The next day, not only had he opened the claws but he'd dropped in the stone and closed the claws again!
Luckily I was pleasantly surprised that the window is less obvious. Of course in the close up photos below you can see the full horror of the cut but when it's on the hand all you notice is the colour and I most definitely can live with that!
