This ring had been on my watchlist for a very long time. I thought it was beautiful, but there were a couple of things holding me back. One was that I was really looking for a ruby diamond ring because I wanted something to represent my son’s birthstone. The other is that it was rated as “fair condition” because the stone has some heavy abrasions. The ring was actually purchased and then returned, so I thought that the abrasions were going to be distracting.
I ended up purchasing a Ruby and diamond ring that I actually really liked a lot. The Ruby was untreated. You can read about it in a prior thread if you want to. I ended up returning it not because I really wanted to, but because of some instability that occurred unexpectedly with my employment.
That instability seems to be a false alarm. I hope so anyway. So I was really considering repurchasing the ruby again. But the spinel kept tugging at my heart because of the antique ring and I’m an old cut girly as most of you probably know. I decided to buy the spinel because I just had to see it in person before making a final decision about the ruby. I would be able to return it if I did not like it.
Edit to add. My cat’s name was Ruby. The one in my avatar. And that’s why whenever I type or dictate the word Ruby it capitalizes it!
As soon as I opened the box, it was game over. The color of the gemstone and the chunky white diamonds blew me away immediately.
My videos and the pictures don’t capture the color. In the listing photo, it looked purplish, but it is pure red and it is glorious! My videos and pictures are better than the listing, but it’s just hard to capture how perfect it is. I will still try! See below. It is set in platinum with a one carat spinel, and one carat of old cuts. I suspect the old cuts are more than one ct bc they look chunkier than that, but that’s just what the listing said.
The last photo shows the abrasions the most clearly because it’s a close-up. But high-level I just don’t notice them. I guess that’s one advantage of farsightedness ha ha.
