While visiting my mother this past week, she showed me a ring she has in her possession that has been passed down through our family and suggested it as my Something Old for my wedding next summer. I was THRILLED and gladly agreed to her idea, as she wore this ring pinned inside her dress for her wedding to my father 25 years ago and it has a lot of history. This ring is approximately a hundred years old. It was my great great grandmother''s wedding ring. She and my great great grandfather had a strong and loving marriage for over fifty years, and I think it will be a special blessing to be able to have it with me on my wedding day. The ring has two rubies and four seed pearls set in gold. It only fits on my middle finger, so I may pin it to my bouquet or something. I took a picture to share with you all.

I posted this in the Colored Stones forum too.

And here it is with my engagement ring:

I think my dress will be my Something New, but I am not sure about the Something Borrowed and Something Blue yet. I have until next July to decide, so of course there''s no hurry.

What are all the rest of you BIW doing for Something Old/New/Borrowed/Blue?

I''ve been thinking about this... given that I''m less than a week away... and I just don''t know???

I went through my jewelry box last night and found my mom''s high school class ring - happens to have an aquamarine or some sort of blue stone in it... but that''s the closest thing I''ve found to anything old or blue - it may have to do as I''m running out of time.

And borrowed? Gosh... I cannot think of a single thing to borrow...? My mom has some stunning jewelry, but none of it really works as wedding jewelry - her pieces would steal the show for sure!! I may just borrow a handkerchief from my grandpa - I''ll probably need it anyhow!

All I''ve figured out so far is that I''ll use the prayer book that my parents and maternal grandparents all used in their weddings. It has a white satin & lace cover (but the cover needs a little cleaning).

I like the ring, Equ!

pretty!

question do other people do "...a six pence in her shoe" too?

something old: hum, maybe i''ll see if i can borrow my gramma''s rosary for the bouquet
something blue: i am thinking my garter should have a touch of blue
something borrowed: same as my old?
something new: dress
and a six pence in her shoe: my aunt got a six pence for me from a local coin shop

something old: my silver jimmy choo''s
something blue: His sister gave me a blue glass heart for Christmas that I had tied in my bouquet
something borrowed: my grandma''s double strand pearl choker
something new: dress
six pence in her shoe: MOH got a five and a one pence, so I put a pence in each shoe under my gel pads.

I just realized that I know more than I put down.

Something New
Dress (I tried on my mom''s, and I couldn''t even start to zip it up.)
Something Blue
If we have a Scottish wedding (as we probably are), I might have a sash of one of our tartans on my dress, and/or some tartan wrapped around my bouquet. We might also have a handfastening as part of the ceremony. Both of our tartans have some amount of blue in them, although his has much more than mine.

Mine:

If we don''t have a Scottish wedding, the blue will probably be part of my undergarments (but I''m not sure).

Now I want to find a sixpence, too.

That sounds like it''s going to be a memorable wedding, Liz. I''ve never been to a Scottish wedding, but I''ve heard about them and the traditions are so cool.

I forgot about the sixpence. I''ll have to see about getting one.

cool- i am glad others are doing a sixpence too!

The Something Old is the only thing I'm missing so far...

I have:
Something New: My Dress
Something Borrowed: My Veil (from my Matron of Honor)
Something Blue: Blue Panties

My something old was supposed to be a bracelet that all my cousins and aunts got married with. My grandmother had it before she passed away in 2004 and I have one aunt that tends to cause drama and trouble in the family. She took it before anyone else had a chance. She also took my grandmother's wedding set which we wanted buried with her , before they even closed the darn casket (this upset the ENTIRE family)!! She claims she's going to send the bracelet to me, but I don't trust a word that comes out of her mouth...

Any ideas?

What a lovely ring!!

Something old - I have one pearl earring shaped like a flower that belonged to my grandmother and I'm pinning it into my bouquet.
Something new- my dress (of course!)
Something borrowed - the small bible that my mother carried in her wedding. I'll carrry it with my flowers but I am making a new cover for it.
Something blue - blue topaz earrings that my future in-laws gave me for Christmas

And I have a silver sixpence for my shoe, too- I got it off of eBay from a seller in the UK. It could double as my something old because it's dated 1954.

Good luck everyone!

Something old - FMIL gave me a strand of pearls that she wore for her wedding. Then, my grandmother found an old locket of hers, and offered it to me as my something old, so I may use both! I''ll definitely wear the pearls, but the locket may need to be incorporated in my bouquet or something.

Something new - My dress, veil, shoes, undies.... Almost everything!

Something borrowed - I''m trying to find someone who will let me borrow a crinoline. If not, maybe earrings?

Something blue - My shoes!

And I always thought it was a penny for your shoe. My mom still has the penny she used for her wedding, so I''ll use that!

My "something old" will probably be a carved ivory rose pendant that was my grandmother''s, on a velvet choker ribbon . It was made around 1919 (well before using ivory was illegal, otherwise I''d have ethical issues). It''s got a little bit of a pink tinge to it, and is very pretty. It will depend on what style of dress I end up with, but since I''m looking for something a little vintagey, it should work. I''ll try to find a pic.

It is very similar to this (from GoAntiques.com). I want to put it on a blue velvet ribbon.

I like reading what all of you other ladies are using, it helps me get some ideas!

I''m not doing the truly traditional old, new, borrowed and blue, but I am going to wear my dad''s wedding ring on my right hand. I just have to get a sizing clamp put on it since it''s way too huge for even my big fingers. Kind of my way of having him walking with me aisle.

This little silver purse was my "something old". I also had lace antique handkies from my great aunt.

Something BLUE: sapphires in my engagement ring
Something NEW: dress, shoes, jewelry, bra, panties!
Something BORROWED: nothing! I didn''t have a "borrowed" so what I''m thinking about doing is giving back the antique lace handkerchieves to my great aunt and then they will actually be in the "borrowed" category, not the "old" category.

Oh but I''m not superstitious or anything.

I pinned my father''s wedding ring on my bouquet for the same reason...since he couldnt be there to walk me down the aisle himself, i wanted something of his to "walk" with me.

my old: my jewelry
my new: dress, shoes, bra, etc
borrowed: my dad''s wedding band, borrowed from my mom
blue: my underwear :)

old: pearl stud earrings from DH given to me during our first Christmas together
new: dress, shoes, sunglasses, veil. (i went commando AND braless! scandalous I tell you.)
borrowed: I didn''t carry it for the ceremony but for the dinner afterwards and for our upcoming reception my good friend let me a silver sparkle purse
blue: my mother''s wedding gift to me was a 1920s platinum/diamond/sapphire ring. she bought it at a jewelry store so it was new to us but definitely will remain in our family for a very long time!
sixpence: huh? I never heard of this before about 10 minutes ago. Where have I been?

Both of my grandmothers grew up as farm girls and are from poor families so they did not have any jewels to pass down; neither had traditional weddings either, so no mementos there. My mom was recently divorced from my stepfather of 18 years so wearing something from her wedding wouldn''t have been particularly timely. So we created our own traditions! I doubt any children I have will want to wear their mom''s old dress or shoes but I am maybe thinking I can convince them to wear the veil, since it ended up being my FAVORITE part of my whole outfit.

FYI The Knot sells sixpence.

I hadn''t given this much thought, so this is fun!

Something Old: Well, I am having my mom''s veil made over to work with my dress. I guess that could maybe be old? If not, my e-ring is from the 50s. Or, I am thinking about having a stone from my Grampy''s wedding ring hidden in my band.

Something New: My dress

Something Borrowed: Maybe I''ll borrow earrings from my mom?

Something Blue: The tartan my FI is wearing has blue in it, so I am thinking about having a garter made from extra fabric. (We aren''t tossing, but I want to wear one.)
