So my UnionDiamond tiffany style setting has arrived!!!

Here''s the story. I have a 3/4 ct round diamond and originally I got a 14K WG Stuller Knife edge six prong to set it in. Then I came upon this site and fell in love with how Kit''s tiffany-style Uniondiamond setting has a little "crown" for prongs whereas the Stuller is just straight prongs...and even though I have that other solitaire, i got this one because I thought it would be really much nicer.

It turns out they are quite similar (my boyfriend''s like, "huh, look the same to me")

Anyway, the new one is platinum. Here are some pics.

The UnionDiamond knife edge really IS very knifey. I have been wearing it on my fingers and it is cutting into the other two on either side a little bit. Its a lot thinner and more delicate than the Stuller I have, I like the delicate part but really wish it didnt cut into my fingers so much. I really really like the crown part, but from far off it is really not quite so noticeable haha! :)

Basically now I have both that I can decide to set my diamond in. If I choose to set it in the new one, the Stuller''s non returnable and if I choose to set it in the stuller i will send the new one back. If I dont set anything in the Stuller I will probably get something else set in it later as a gift for christmas/birthday.

By the way, Kit, if you are still here, does the knifeyness bother your other fingers??? I have been wearing it a bit to try to get used to it..

Okay here are some pics.

I will run an errand and be back w/ more pics.

froufrou, did you leave? I don''t see any pics

. It sounds lovely though. I think I remember peebles saying the knife edge on her Scott kay ring bothered her fingers. I would think you''ll get used to it though after wearing it a few days.

Unfortunately, the pic was too big....I am back and here it is! :)

PS, if someone could enlighten me as to how to take these pics up close, im not sure...I was looking for a macro setting on cam and couldn''t find one. These are all far away shots and then a photoshop cut out of the object in question.

Here you can see how thin it is...

the setting looks gorgeous. as for the macro, it normally is a little flower symbol on your camera.

And a comparison of the stuller w/ the new guy :) Stuller''s on the right. I think the stuller might be a quarter size smaller than the new one, the new guy is 6.5, I didn''t know the size of the Stuller but it fits tighter.

Thanks mrssalvo!!! I like it too :)

AHA...so that''s what the flower symbol does... ;) I will have to try some macro shots too

The Stuller on the right again. This is too funny, I started out when I got it thinking maybe I should return it because it is quite similar. Then after posting the pics of the two next to each other I realized how much I love this new one...it is exactly what I like, the thinness and how the little prongs look like lace or like a little crown. The stuller really is pretty too but is a little more "geometric"

Here is the Stuller on the left again.

Well, unfortunately my camera does not come with a flower mode, I was thinking of my boyfriend''s which I remember seeing the flower on there. Mine''s a digital Sony from..hm, 2002 I think. I wonder if I am just missing it. I will definately have to borrow my boyfriend''s for handshots later when we get engaged then :):) !!!!

Now I just have to insure it and then get it set... I wish I could post pics of the diamond too but I''m not allowed to see it anymore til the engagement, its so pretty though!!!

I think once it is set the prongs will be brought together and then part of the tops cut off. I wonder if I get a preference as to how high I want it and if so what I should say I want??? Anyone know how this works...I know they can set stuff high or low, I don''t want it too low but not too high either. The stuller one is already notched where the diamond should be and is a little high I think, so maybe a little lower than that. Does anyone know how high the original Tiffany is set?

It''s so pretty Froufrou! I do like the UD setting more than the stuller. The Stuller prongs are flat, and that''s what bothers me. I guess you could have the knife edge softened a little bit, but I''d wear it a few days and I''m sure you''ll get used to it.

the UD will be very diff from the stuller when the diamond is actually in there and the tops closed and prong tips polished etc. stullers 6 prong is a little bulky BUT it can be shaved down and modified. my 6 stone head is a modified stuller solstice and it looks nothing like the standard one the way it has been shaved down and polished. but the UD one is a little more like that one to begin with.

i really like the UD one...you may also see if they can shave down a bit of the knife edge then polish it so it''s a little more smooth. it''s just metal so seems like it''d be possible. good lluck!!

I have been wearing it the past hour and it is still bugging me a little bit . I wore the stuller for a while and it didnt bug me from the beginning because the edge is not as knifey.

Actually when I bought the Stuller it was from a local jeweler and I was saying i thought it was a little too thick and then he was like "i can shave it down a little" and i was like "oh that''d be great" and then he started laughing and said he was joking and said that would ruin the ring or whatever. I guess though it is possible? im wondering if eventually i decide that it DOES bug me if it would be possible to shave the knife edge a little bit. id have to find a good jeweler then...

yeah the UD will look different from how it looks now, since the diamond is smaller and the prongs will have to be brought in. I think the prongs are lots thinner on the UD but since the UD is platinum they should be strong enough. I''m wondering where the diamond will sit in the prongs, i assume lower than their tips right now, but how much lower im not sure.

did i mention how adorable the BOX was???

mara: where''s your ring?? i want to see!!!

ff here is my setting...this shows how sculpted the prong tips can get, WF ordered in the stuller 6 prong then modified it to this. it''s more scoopy/squatty/spready from the side and less stock.

this one shows the head a little better.

wow Mara, your ring is beautiful!!! :):):) wow! the prongs look great :)

It''s a beautiful setting! But, I''m confused, I was once told that Union Diamond wouldn''t sell their solitaire settings without one of their diamonds...

Yeah that''s right JDgirl, they no longer will sell them. Kit bought one back in January so I contacted them about getting one and was telling the owner that I was confused since on the WEBSITe you used to actually be able to put in the credit card info and everything to buy so they said they''d fix the website and sell me the very last one that they are selling w/o the stone. Had i known before I bought my diamond though how much I liked the UD setting I woulda just bought the diamond from them too.

So my boyfriend has now hidden my setting from me too and now I have to wait to see that and the diamond until the engagement, so not til like fall or winteR!!!! argh! but when we were filling out the insurance application he did write "fiancee" for our relationship ;) ...but he also got my birthday wrong on it...haha so the two cancel out.

Hi FrouFrou,

I read your another thread; thanks for attaching the link to this one.

The UD one looks very nice! I do love the tulip head. : ) I''m sure you can shave down the edge a bit. When I called Vatche to see if they can shave down the band, they said they can do it for no charge.

So, hopefully I can show you my ring in summer/fall, and you can show me yours in fall/winter.

oh, forgot to mention one more thing...

Mara, your ring is beaaauuuutiful!! I love it!!!! I really like how the band is (thin and diamonds all around).

thanks FF and oceanbeach..i like it.

the head looks so much better now than it used to when i had a 4 prong..i love that WF was able to make this new head as scoopy as possible without having to do a big custom thing. it really showcases the diamond in a fab way.

hope your rings turn out amazing!!

I just had to chime in here and say, I am so happy for you Frou!! Yay!! Honestly as I said in my other post, I don''t feel the knife edge at all, however I do have chunky fingers so perhaps the padding there is actually helping. Ha!

Mara, the head of that ring is really nice. I had no idea it was a Stuller, it is so swoopy and delicate. Would you say that you have the stone set low in there? I think that is half of the look, how low the stone is set into the prongs. And in your case, how the prongs are shaped and polished.

Anyway, glad all is well and you got the setting you wanted Frou.

sorry to bring this up again, but I do want to buy the Tiffany knife edge plantium setting from UD. If anybody else can have comment on this setting, I would really appreciated. Is knife edge really a problem?

thank you .

I think UD only sells that setting with one of their stones.

I guess I am gonna stuck with their diamonds then...:)
