I got engaged in October of 2008, my wedding date is June 5, 2010. I decided to get a headstart on dress shopping, and the local dress shop just happened to be having a 20% off sale when I looked in late November...so naturally...I found a dress I loved and decided to order it...couldn''t hurt to cash in on the sale!

The owner took my measurements and said because of my chest size she was ordering a 12(not because of my weight?)...I trusted her knowledge as it is a shop that many of my friends have purchased dresses from and signed the order form....I also had to have length added to the dress because I was afraid my feet would show, even though the dress was just touching the floor...which cost me an extra $150! But its my wedding dress and I want it to be just right! I told the owner and seamstress that I had put on a little weight over the last year and that I was the heaviest I have ever been. I''m 5''9, and my clothes range from size 6-10 depending on the designer. I also let her know that I would be losing about 15-20 lbs to get back to my old self....and to maybe order me a 10 rather than a 12. I let her know that I would put the deposit down to take advantage of the sale...and if she was concerned with my weight loss I would come back in a few months to be measured again...she said don''t worry our seamstress is great(which I agreed)

The dress came in last month and it was falling off of me...the owner was sort of laughing and asked how much weight I had lost, I told her about 15lbs and I was planning on losing 5 more....it was the weight I had put on over the last year or so...I called it my happy fat :) She said don''t lose too much or the dress won''t look right because of all of the beading and satin in the bodice area...I also felt it was a bit long..but that could have been because that hadn''t "fluffed" the dress out and it was also too big...the dress can''t be shortened because of the beading at the bottom...also another thing I''m worried about!

I dont understand why she would have ordered me a dress if I told her I was going to lose close to 2 dress sizes! I understand girls say that alot and probably put on weight or don''t lose any at all...but shouldn''t that be my problem if I''m too heavy to fit in my dress?

Has anyone had this experience were the dress had to be taken in 2-3 dress sizes? I understood having to have it larger in the chest as I am busty...but the whole thing just hangs on me! and I don''t want to look like I am wearing a potato sack on my wedding day, and I''m certainly not going to gain the weight back that I''ve been running off for the last 6 months!

Just nervous! I go back in two weeks(BM dresses are in and they are pulling mine as well) and I''m pretty sure I''ve lost another 3-5lbs since the fitting...I''m not really trying to lose weight anymore as I am back to my old self...but its summer and I love to run and work out...so it may happen!

My dress is Alfred Angelo 1708 in all ivory.my dress

Any advice/experiences are appreciated!!

I posted my dress fitting yesterday. I ordered my dress in a size 10 and I''m a size 2-4. You can see in some of my pics where the dress is pinned and being taken in about 5 inches in most places. It looked rediculous when I put it on but you''ll see by the end of my pics that it is going to look amazing. Don''t worry!

What you wrote above is exactly why they didn''t order a smaller size. I know at my store, if you wanted to order a size smaller than what you were measuring, you had to sign a waiver saying that it was completely not their responsibility if you order a smaller size than they advise and then don''t fit into it. It is a very common problem, so I am sure they ordered the size you were in order to protect themselves because dresses can be taken in but it is very difficult to make them bigger if they are too small.

I am in a similar situation, I have very narrow hips compared to the rest of me, so I had to get a 16 in order to fit my chest/shoulders, but I measured a 10 or 12 in the hips... THEN I lost 20 lbs since ordering the dress! I have my first fitting tonight

but when I went to visit my dress when it first came in, they assured me that it wouldn''t be a problem. It may be difficult with your beading, but I am sure that it will turn out well. I know that weight loss varies by person, but for me, 5 lbs doesn''t make that HUGE of a difference on me, so I don''t see how they can alter it now, but if you lose just a teeny bit more, they can''t? SOunds like they are just trying to keep their job as easy as possible...

congrats morgie and november on the weight loss!! that''s an amazing achievement! i know that this dress situation must be horribly annoying! i''m sure that they will be able to make it work though. i am always amazed when i watch say yes to the dress. the girls are so often swimming in their gowns before alterations! i bought mine off the rack, and it somehow happened to fit almost perfectly. i have been more worried about weight gain than anything else!

Thanks...

EM...your dress is beautiful! Its nice to know that someone else is having their dress taken in alot and its turning out fine...

I believe they are doing pinning on this next fitting...I''ll get to see what my dress looks like...and it will actually look like it fits!

Morgie...I had to sign a form because of the length and that they were ordering the correct size...which is why I''m annoyed my dress is so big!

I completely understand...my MOH has gained 15lbs since she was measured and she wanted to have her dress ordered in a smaller size...now she will be struggling to fit in the dress they ordered her...I just know myself and that I wanted to get back to my healthy lifestyle....I was finishing my last semester of college, was just offered a full time job and got engaged...you could say I was over eating at ever celebration :)

Nov2109 - I''m confused then. Did you sign off on a size 10 and they still ordered you a 12, or did the paper you sign say 12? It is water under the bridge now, but if you signed off for a size 10 and they ordered you a 12, I would ask why and see if they plan on compensating you for alterations costs, because that sounds fishy. Either way, I am sure that they can make your dress fit you beautifully!

I signed on the length and that they had measured me for a size 12, although I suggested that a 10 should be fine...I was on the borderline between the two in the first place...but I''m not a seamstress...so I went with the professional opinion.

All of the alterations are included in the price of the dress...which may be why they don''t see a problem with doing major alterations as it doesn''t cost me anything...I''m just frustrated because its so big...I think it would have been too big even if I didn''t lose the weight!

The fact is, most brides don''t manage to lose a lot of weight before their wedding.

I would suggest holding off on any alterations until the normal time they are generally done...which is right before you wedding. If you do happen to regain some weight, and the dress is now sized down to much you''re going to have new problems you don''t want. And, likewise, if you lose even more weight, you don''t want to have to redo the whole thing, either.

I agree with Italia, my dress shop only books alteration appointments 3 months out. My last fitting was only a few weeks ago and I am getting married this Saturday. Lots of things can happen and if you lose more weight or gain some back, you don''t want them constantly letting it out and taking it in. Don''t worry, they can do wonders with dresses, I once had a bridesmaid dress that was a size 14 altered to fit my size 0 body (this was pre-college days mind you!)

I had the same issue. I have a very large chest and the bridal shop insisted on ordering me a size 18 (I''m size 8-10!). Anyway, the dress was so big that I had to hold it up with my hands to keep it from falling to my ankles. I''m convinced it was so that they could charge me the extra money for the plus-size dress and alterations. Anyway, turns out the dress was beautifully altered and fit like a glove by the time they were done, but I think TWO dresses could have been made out of the material.

Oh NO!!! I''m so sorry this is happening to you

I''m sure the seamstress will make it right. Don''t worry, it will all work out in the end :D

*HUGS*

Don''t worry! My dress was a 10 and I''m a size 2. Fit perfect in the bust but had to be taken way in at the waist, where there was beading all around. It turned out perfect and felt great.

Hi Nov, I ordered my dress in a 10 which swam on me, but the lady in the shop assured me that it would sit better around the hips if I got that size and took it in everywhere else to be a size 8. I was worried that I would loose the detail on the bodice, but I decided to trust her expertise so I guess I will find out in September! Having said that, I know that everyone I talk to gets great results once the seamstress steps in so I''m pretty confident that yours will work out as well.

thanks everyone...They aren''t going to do any alterations until March(which is the first official fitting)...however I am going to ask them to clip/pin the dress so I can see what it will sort of look like..and so I don''t have to stand there holding it up the entire time...The seamstress is great from what everyone tells me(I''ve seen her work as well)...and the shop has been around for years so they must be doing something right!

They like to have the bride/bridesmaids come in a few times prior to the first official fitting to see if they need to loose/maintain etc...not a bad policy.

It''s nice to know everyone else has had their dress brought in multiple sizes as well!

Don''t stress... it will be fine. My seamstress got blood all over my dress when she pricked herself and it came out immediatley. My moh was freaking out and for some reason I just wasn''t. Anyway, here is a picture of me holding up my dress cause it litterally fell off me.
