A few random pieces from one of my boxes...

Anyone want to play ''Name That Stone''? There are 4 stones to name so wait for the all before guessing!

Stone Number 1:

This stone is a 2.3ct oval and super sparkly!

Stone Number 2:

Another oval - If I recall correctly it's about 1.65ct. It has a lot of tiny inclusions in photographs but looks eyeclean IRL.

Stone Number 3:

These two pears are approx 1ct each.

And finally...

Stone Number 4:

This is a tricky one - it''s about 3cts and although it looks a bit opaque in the picture (which shows the colour very well) it is very transparent and quite sparkly.

Here''s another pic of that last one...

Hmm..

Stone 1, I guess purple sapphire. If it''s a taaffeite, I officially hate you

Stone 2, blue apatite.

Stone 3, chrome diopside.

Stone 4, transparent labradorite.

Sadly not a taaffeite...

Two out of four.... although I would have gone with one of your incorrect answers as well if I was guessing.

I don''t know what any of them are, but WOW! Totally gorgeous!

Is that first one a mozambique tourmaline, then?

Wait, which ones did I miss..?

I vote...

1. spinel (big guess... )
2. apatite
3. chrome diposide
4. hessonite garnet

Still two out of four!

I''ll try again.

1 Violet zoisite/tanzanite
2 Apatite
3 Chrome diopside
4 Andesine (if you don''t consider it labradorite)

I would have considered Andesine as labradorite.

Still two out of four.

1.My first thought when looking at the first stone was morganite. But I suppose it could also be a pale spinel or tourmaline? There are pale pink garnets to but I haven''t actually seen any.
2.The second one looks like apatite to me too.
3. I agree looks like chrome diopside. Could be some kind of tourmaline though.
4. Could the last one be sunstone?

1. kunzite
2. apatite
3. chrome diopside
4. fire opal

1. I was also thinking Morganite, but thought it might be a spinel or pale amethyst.
2. Apatite
3. Chrome Diopside
4. Sunstone is my guess, too.

How about...
1 Kunzite
2 Apatite
3 Chrome Diopside
4 BE Sapphire

And 10 out of 10 goes to Proteus.

And extra Brownie Points for getting the BE part.

Woo! Thanks. You''re sneaky...!

The photo of the fourth one made it harder as it looked more translucent than transparent - I would totally have totally opted for andesine.

It was one of my first purchases about 4 years ago and a very reasonable price - the BE was disclosed to me.

The chrome diopsides were the first 'serious' stones I ever bought.

The other two I bought fairly recently.

darn! I missed the game!
Good call on the BE.

fun game Pandora... not to mention the pretty photos too! Those two definitely threw me off. More stones for name that stone, round 2?

1. Kunzite
2. Apatite
3. Chrome diopside
4. Oregon sunstone

Ahhh...I'm too late for the game. Looks like I got the last one wrong.

hmmmm!

1. Spinel
2. Paraiba/Apatite is what I meant to say!
3. Chrome Diopside
4. Sunstone?

Only one of these that I'm pretty certain about!

OK, the only one I got right off the bat was the apatite. But... although I'm too late to join the game, I figure it's never to late to learn, so I have just a few questions for those of you who did better than just one out of four:

1) how did you know that #3 was chrome diopside rather than tsavorite?
2) BE = barium enhanced?

and to Proteus: what was the kicker for #4? My immediate thought was sunstone/labradorite. Did the "sparkly" in PandoraII's description factor in?

MINIMS,

I figured it was chrome diopside because it looks a touch too yellow (tsavorite is usually more bluish) and the RI/luster looked too low.

BE stands for "beryllium enhanced."

#4 looked like labradorite at a glance, but Pandora said it wasn''t, so... I thought about it.
It had zoning, and the RI looked high. That rules out citrine or tourmaline (which are uncommon in that bright orange color.) Also, the cutting was fairly simple, and it was 3 carats, so I figured it wouldn''t be a natural sapphire. A 3ct natural orange sapphire would be really expensive, would probably have some flaws in it, and be cut differently. There wasn''t really anything else that it could be, aside from orange zircon, but there was no strong doubling effect... so that rules zircon out.

Hope this helps.

Very nice!

Name That Rock is one of my favourite games in real life!

Once I get the camera back and try retaking the photos of my garnets, I take some pics of a few more stones and we can all play again. I''ve got a few tricky ones in there that could be fun...

Thanks you Pandora for the challenge, and Proteus for the explanation. I'd love to improve my batting average for this game!

That was fun!

Before I read the answers I guessed Kunzite, Apatite, Tsavorite & Sapphire...
