Hello there,

Can anyone provide me an estimate price for my engagement ring, I have this feeling that it''s been over priced.

3 stones ring

0.7C, Round, medium cut, GH, I1
0.18C, Roung, good cut, GH, I1
0.18C, Roung, good cut, GH, I1
18K white gold

The center big stone has a big something like a chip - I understand the clarity of the stones are not great, I hope it''s an inclusion. And one of the side stone has a black dot in it.

Thanks!

This is a good question and one to learn from.

Why would you ask this question after the fact ?

People do your research before you buy.

You are not the only one that has asked this question. Its a done deal , enjoy the ring. What you might have over paid , consider that an payment in the class room of life.

Take Care

Can you still return it? If so, take it back. Thats not worth much in my estimation.

Thanks Iceman, I agree with you. See, this is my e-ring, meaning I wasn't the one who bought it.

I wouldn't buy it... Do you have a pic of it?

And I don't really want to return it, because I love it for it's sentimental value. I just want to know the fact how much it really worth. And by knowing this, we might will never walking in to that store again.

If you JUST got it Id suggest to him that you love it and cherish it but think he got ripped off and maybe should explore your options. One of the vendors on this site could make a similar one for you.

Then again, returning it might hurt his feelings if you really dig it. Its really hard to say how much its really worth without an appraisal. But you can return it because you were overcharged for it based on the appraisal. Misrepresented merch.

well, can you tell us how much you paid for it? i know you don't want to return it, but are you within the return window?

he paid USD 5800. It's custom made. I don't have a pic of it.

Well you might be able to get better stones for it if you talk to the jeweler. Thats really not TOO TOO bad but I think for the cut and stone quality it might be pretty high.

oh, dear me. i'm no expert, but $5800 for a little over a carat of what i'm assuming are uncertified I1 stones, one of which may be chipped?

as iceman said, if you're not within the return window then there's no point worrying about it. if you are, i'm willing to bet one of the vendors here can get you something you'd be really happy with for that kind of money.

The ring has GIA cert. but the fact of I1 clarity and the chip make me feel it worth less (maybe alot).

I will go see the vendor who sole the ring to my fiace. maybe have the stone changed or them lower the price. I assume there will be a tough negotiation, can you guys give me some advice?

how long ago was the ring purchased?

I believe within 1 month.

okay, well do you know what the vendor's return policy is? i assume that if you're worried you must not be within in?

I need find that out with my fiance. After the engagement, I went for 2 weeks biz trip. I won't return the ring, just thinking it should be still under warranty.

i'm not sure what you mean. if you are not going to return the ring, what are you going to do? ask them to "fix" your diamond?

Edited to add: Ah, I see, you want to see if you can get them to lower the price or replace the chipped diamond. Good luck with the former--I doubt you're going to have any luck doing that if the ring they sold you is, in fact, what it purports to be (ie, a three stone ring with I1 G/H diamonds). You may have more success in getting them to replace the chipped stone. I don't really know.

If it were me and the vendor's policy would allow it, I'd return the whole thing, start over with another vendor and get something worth my $5800. I know you don't want to make your fiancee feel bad, but he may actually appreciate the opportunity to get you something nicer for his money.

If the ring is not misrepresented because it is I1 stones BUT the price is inflated is there anything she can do about it? Does this also count as a kind of misrepresentation? If an appraisal says the stones are worth a lot less than he paid for it would that be misrepresentation?

i'm no expert but i really kind of doubt it. i mean, tiffany's is overpriced but you can't go back in there complaining and asking for a price reduction when you figure out you could have gotten the same kind of thing for less elsewhere. that's why you need to do your homework beforehand. here, if the diamonds really are G/H I1s, and the chip was there when he bought it . . .

maybe one of the vendors who knows more than i do can give us their take.

Yes Reena. I never thought about Tiffanys.

i agree with you, though, pyramid--it doesn't seem quite fair!

But this vendor is no Tiffanys. I might feel better paying $2000 more just for a name.

exactly. which is why i'm asking whether you have the option to simply return it. but what's done is done--at the very least you can try to see if they'll replace your chipped diamond. hope it all works out.

Hi Cyntak,
Your opinion on the clarity and cut will not carry much weight if you go back for return/replacement.

First things first, get the facts! Pay for an appraisal from an independent appriasier. You can find one through the appraiser link on PS. A chip may appraise it as I2 and with a poor cut

If the appriasal differs from what you've been told, you have leverage to negotiate swapping the diamond. You could even threaten them with small claims court to get some action

If the appraisal matches what you've been told, then learn to love it and start saving for your upgrade.
