Hi all,

Need some advice on a BN stone i''ve been eyeing. I know about other PS vendors, but feel most comfortable going through BN due to ease of international ordering:

Here is the stone:

1.16ct
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
6.72 x 6.76 x 4.18
Depth: 62%
Table: 55%
Crown: 36 degrees
Pavilion: 40.6 degrees
GIA Excellent/Excellent/Excellent

I plan on eventually matching it to the following stone which I already have (to make some studs) at a later date:

1.165ct
Color: G
Clarity: SI1 (eye-clean)
6.76 x 6.77 x 4.21
Depth: 62.3%
Table: 54%
Crown: 34.9 degrees
Pavilion: 41.0 degrees
AGS000

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Thanks!

This is an FIC stone. Might be a little less brilliant than the AGS0 stone you have. Probably un-noticeable. Otherwise, looks like a good match in size and color.

It looks like a nice diamond, as to matching the exisiting one they are two different '' personalities'' of diamond - whether you would notice this with earrings is debatable but maybe see what else is out there before pulling the trigger.

I agree.

Thanks for your replies everybody. This site seems to have helped me with information in so many ways!

I haven''t really been able to find anything that matches closely enough in size to the existing stone and so pulled the trigger on the GIA Excellent from BN.

I''m now a little concerned about FIC and BIC. When researching the BN diamond, I was sure to keep the diameter within +/- 1.5% and the table/depth within +/- 3.5% as per the advice from a previous post. There seem to be a lot of studs on the BN site that are matched GIA/AGSL sets as well.

Will this be a bad combination? I''ve spoken to a few jewelers and they''ve all said that it would match up perfectly. I''ve also checked the HIC and it came up with a good score and put the dimensions through AGA''s cut calculator and came up with Class 1B.

Am I going down the wrong path here? I really want her to be wowwed!

Nay, the optical effects should not be too different. We are over analyzing as usual.

Well if you have looked and haven't found anything else that will match then consider this one, being worn as earrings you probably won't notice any difference in performance, if you were looking for it then you might do if closely scrutinizing each diamond but any difference would be subtle, as I said earlier it is debatable whether you would notice any difference with earrings.

I hope not that we are over analyzing ' as usual' otherwise we are not best serving those we try to help.

Not sure what your budget is, but found this BN stone, link, might be a closer match if you are really worrying about the FIC. You will have to get BN to email you the report, looks like a new stone so no angles are available.

Fez, I would contact BN and ask for the angles on that one, it might be an option.

I''ve just requested the cert and will post specs once I get them.

If it doesn''t "pan out" i''m really hoping the GIA that i''ve already ordered will be ok. It seems like this site caters to a very discerning individual and I''m wondering if "most" jewelers would even differentiate between the two stones. When I called BN, they told me that they match studs almost entirely by depth/table/dimensions (which seem to be very close between my existing AGS000 and the new GIA).

If I do keep the GIA, what differences will I notice? Negligible?

The stresses of christmas shopping begin .....

Thanks in advance!

Like I said earlier, it is doubtful that you would notice any difference especially with earrings. If you were looking for it and the lighting was right, the new diamond might show more fire than the original stone, but to put it into perspective - in the real non PS world, stud earrings are matched without even considering FIC, BIC etc, so I don't think you need to worry too much if you don't want to look any further. I think it would be more of a case of IF you were looking for a difference between the two diamonds performancewise, if it was pointed out to you that the FIC showed more fire then you might say with direct comparison between the two " okay I see what you mean, but that isn't something I would worry about or that my lady would ever notice" if that helps?

Just got the cert. from BN.

The AGS specs are as follows:

1.16ct
6.72 x 6.75 x 4.18
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Depth 62%:
Table: 56%
Crown: 34.1 degrees
Pavillion: 41 degrees
AGS000

Do you think this would be a better match to my existing AGS000? It''s actually also $500 cheaper than the GIA one I posted earlier.

I need to cancel my old order ASAP if you think this is a better stone in order to receive it in time for christmas.

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

I would say this AGS stone is a better match than the GIA stone, nearer to the TIC range. And cheaper too.

What about the dimensions? They are slightly smaller than the GIA stone...

TIA

Only 0.02mm? Not noticeable to my eyes.

Ended up ordering both stones, but need to cancel one by the end of the day (before it ships and I get dinged for return shipping charges). What do the specialists recommend in order to match my existing stone. Go with the first GIA stone or go with the "new" AGS000???

To reiterate:

Existing Stone:

1.165ct
Color: G
Clarity: SI1 (eye-clean)
6.76 x 6.77 x 4.21
Depth: 62.3%
Table: 54%
Crown: 34.9 degrees
Pavilion: 41.0 degrees
AGS000

Proposed GIA Match:

1.16ct
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
6.72 x 6.76 x 4.18
Depth: 62%
Table: 55%
Crown: 36 degrees
Pavilion: 40.6 degrees
GIA Excellent/Excellent/Excellent

Proposed AGS Match:

1.16ct
6.72 x 6.75 x 4.18
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Depth 62%:
Table: 56%
Crown: 34.1 degrees
Pavillion: 41 degrees
AGS000

I''m soo confused....

Thanks in advance.

Anyone? Isn''t the table of the new AGS000 too big at 56%? This is at the very extreme of 54% + 3.5% = 55.89%

Your help is appreciated everyone as I really don''t want to pay return shipping (if BN decides to ship the earlier GIA stone).

TIA

GIA stone

REAL Table size = 0.55 x (6.72+6.76)/2 = 3.707mm

AGS stone

REAL Table size = 0.56 x (6.72+6.75)/2 = 3.772mm

Original AGS stone

REAL Table size = 0.54 x (6.76+6.77)/2 = 3.653mm

Do you really believe you can tell the difference in size of the tables between the 2 stones, with flashes of light everywhere, of just 0.1mm? The table is just the largest top facet of the stone, it is not the entire circle, so it is not clearly defined. If you can tell the difference in size then go with the GIA.

Thanks for your feedback Stonecold. I think you''re definitely right.

It''s funny how numbers on a screen can throw off perception of sizes - i have a ruler here in front of me and can''t even visualize how small a difference of 0.1mm would be.

I feel most comfortable in going with the AGS000 as long as the "smaller" diameter will make no difference. I know that I''ll never find two stones that are IDENTICAL in dimension (or very difficult to do so) but is the difference definitely within the "tolerable range"?

Any other input from the specialists before I pull the trigger and cancel the GIA stone?

Thanks everybody for all your help!
