Dear all,

I impulse bought an item on eBay today (a SE of COVID stay at home) an “Emerald” ring (quotations around emerald since without certification I have no idea if it’s glass, plastic, etc, just thought it looked pretty and for <$500 is not a crazy amount to risk)

Here’s the Link:

Thoughts on what the stone could be? (I plan to get it tested by my local jeweler and if not emerald, will return under “item not as described”. Otherwise, if synthetic despite the plenty of inclusions I’ll likely keep and wear for fun).

Honestly I’m not holding out much hope that it is real given the setting looks at best retro and worst costume-y/cheap and why would someone put a 4ct emerald in such a setting...

Do you have sharper images of the faceting? It looks too blurry to make much out of the stone. Or are those pictures by the vendor since you just bought it today? Sorry for the confusion!

I do agree that $500 for a 4 ct emerald isn't a good sign. Are non-essential stores (jewellery store) still open where you are? Everything except medical and grocery related are closed where I am.

Edited:
NVM, just clicked on the link and saw they are seller's pictures.

@chrono Thanks for your reply. My jeweler says he will reopen on April 7 and I think I have up to 90 days to open up PayPal dispute so hopefully that gives me enough time.

Yes, I think the chances are slim of this being a real emerald but I could not help myself (I do like the color and the large size, albeit if it was real it’s SUPER includedand just want to see what it looks like in real person, it’s an expensive itch I had to scratch!).

Agreed that I have no idea what cut this is. Maybe emerald cut? But then the sides sort of “slope off” like with Cabochons. Again, not a good sign.

But it’s so green and pretty says the irrational inner voice, buy it!! (I think I’m going nuts from being cooped up!)

Also, if someone made an imitation stone, would they go to the length to make all the inclusions? As it is even as a real emerald given significant inclusions it’s likely not worth much. Why wouldn’t the forgers try to make a cleaner emerald with some minor inclusions (to convince us it is real emerald perhaps) to try to sell it for more money?

My concern isn't so much that it is imitation but potentially heavily dyed, which it will leak out eventually and not look so nice. There will be telltale signs if it is a dyed stone (concentration of line colours) but the pictures are too terrible to make anything out.

My guess is that its heavily treated and therefore won't be stable over time

@chrono and @lovedogs thank you. I think maybe even colored wax filled may be possible. Anyhoo, I’ll share photos once I get it!

@T L Calling emerald guru here! What do you think? Am I being cavalier/crazy with my $? I’ve wanted something big and green for a long time...

Might be an emerald but could very well be one thats heavily treated given the price. If so, and if thats a gold setting, then you pretty much bought a gold setting.

Or, you could have gotten lucky, I honestly don't know because its too hard to tell from the image.

Only real way to know if its a real emerald is to have it tested by someone who would know. Your jeweler if he's good with colored stones may be able to test for the first part.

The 2nd part (discerning treatments) will require an independent lab.

I bought a largish, heavily included emerald bc I liked the size & color. It WAS inexpensive.

@motownmama Would love to see a photo of your emerald!
