Hello everyone,
On Monday i quit my job with a well known jewelry company due to a very hostile work place created by management...24 people gone in 7 months in a jewelry store that needs 30 people to run smooth, they are running on half staff. I have contacted my state''s labor commission, work force services, and the human resource center of my former employer...Can anyone help with ways you have found to find quality employment and stay positive until I find something.I have a degree in communications and business, and have helped people in the jewelry trade find employment so i know the basics in finding a job,but i know that this forum is a gold mine for information and support so please share any info or experiances...thanks!

I am so sorry to hear that! Things happen for a reason, and I had the worst job of my life which hence brought me to the best of my life, so I feel things even out in the end...

Have you tried GIA''s website? It seems to me most jobs are from connections, and considering entering into smaller companies is usually that method alone (for trust reasons). When it comes to larger companies, you would be well suited to draft a phenomenal resume (clean, clear conscise and detailing your bottom line contributions to the company very succinctly) and then dressing in your finest business attire and just walking into the stores and speaking to the managers on the floor. Sometimes they can direct you to HR, or the one in charge, but this very old method of job procurement has gotten me call backs at some of the most prestigious places (sales jobs mostly) and as such, your presentation is elemental to gaining favor or even having them put in a good word for a call back.

One company called me after 4 months, although I was already employed. They do keep resumes until staffing is required. But for more business related positions, try some of the headhunters in the field. I haven''t got names with me, but when I get back to NY I will look them up. Also frequent the various gem/jewlery shows to find some part-time work as a show helper (some people literally just need you to show pieces and be at the booth), or even consider part-time work with Auction houses as exhibition assistant. Christie''s and Sotheby''s are always looking. Maybe even a Saks or something within the jewelry department to bide your time?

If you are in NY you have many options, you just need to be creative, but my best suggestion is walk-ins as well as your own research and mail to the HR department of certain companies (on-line).

Good luck and try GIA''s website first and foremost!

Network
Call any and all possible connections
Make a list of companies you''d really like to work for and mount an offensive till you get to speak to the right people.

Make sure your resume is top-notch, use anyone you can to get input on it.

To keep your spirits up, do some online courses or brush up on any skills you could do with a refresher in.

Good Luck!

PS I firmly believe that things happen because they need to and as long as you believe in yourself you will end up in a better situation.

Thanks for the replys!I will go back to basics and start hitting the pavement as well as check the G.I.A.web site.
