I am looking for something for a special person that has put up with me for 20 years now, and I found this wonderful tennis bracelet at a very reputable jeweler in town.

The problem, is that I''m not sure if it is worth the asking price.

Description: 2.94 TW VS1 - G, set in platinum, about 60 diamonds, the diamonds are round but the setting is square and it is stunning. It has the original box, some jeweler from NY. I am not sure of the age, but it is a timeless look.

The asking price is $8500 with a claimed replacement value of $16,000. They are willing to take it back if the missus doesn''t like it for a full refund.

I am thinking of purchasing it and then getting it appraised at a independant jeweler, is this a good idea?

TIA,

Shawn

Good idea ???! Wow!

I think I know the style and it cannot be but a great idea

The one catch with these pieces is that there is no other guarantee aside the seller's word for the grade of the diamonds. But then, with the promiss for full refund and an appraisal this sounds fool proof to me.

The price reminds me strongly of... Tiffany's! Not only G/VS is higher quality than usually used for bracelets, but 8k sounds high regardless. It could well be that the setting alone is worth 4k because of some very special design, but the '80s box settings that come to mind with your description are still made and not so much of a rarity.

Here's why I say this:
line bracelet 3 cts F/G VS - 4k

The design may not be much, but the weight and quality of stones is there. Besides, I think these line bracelets can be quite easily made on order with som many designs being popular. Usually, the diamonds make all the difference in price be it three-prong or box link as below:

Is this nearly the style (just for the diamonds, of course) ?

Yes, I think so. It is very close to the style.

Just for the record.

Well, I offered $6k and the answer was...nope.

They said that each diamond is "ideal cut", which makes them more valuable.

Also, they said they cannot honor the first salesperson''s statement to allow me to return the piece for full value, stating that if I lived in town that would work but since I am not it would not work for them. The piece is on consignment.

So now I am back to square one unless I agree to the purchase with no hope of refund if my wife doesn''t like it. (that is a very big probability)
