Need Camera Help! Canon 890IS vs 850IS

So some months back I bought the canon 870IS. It''s a great camera... IF you don''t want to do macro shots. Honestly I think my macro shots stink in comparison with AmberG''s 850IS. The only problem is it''s nearly impossible to find an 850IS in stock or on ebay (and I don''t mean the ''shabby'' one thats listed on there now).

Most of the 850IS''s listed are in the high 200 or more range. I saw some lower and called but they are all out of stock. That leaves me with the option of buying the 890IS for 200 dollars.

Can anyone help me to make a decsion on a macro camera? I don''t mind having the 870IS for traveling etc but I really want a good cheap macro cameara. Around 200 is fine.

I could be wrong too, maybe the 950 IS is the newer version of the 850??

ETA: It appears I can buy one used for 200-240. Maybe I should do that? (the 850 that is)OR for 200 refurbished. Although I'm not sure if I should buy a refurb camera.

ETA ETA: I just read Canon doesn't refurb cameras! It said refurbs are from other dealers. That's bizzare.

yes from 3/4 zoom to full zoom it does great.
at wide angle it is just average.
Which is not a problem because you want the greater distance the zoom provides for ring pics.

My 850 and my MIL''s 890 macro''d the same...both great.

The last time I saw the 850 was at Costco around the holidays. They had the camera and the color printer for 249...awesome package.

I prefer the 850 over the 890 for shape and ease of use.

I"m amazed at how hard they are to find! I can maybe get an 850 for 240.00 including shipping. Does that sound reasonable? It''s the lowest new camera price I could find.

Yes, from the few test shots I took, there was no difference. Double check the lens specs though.

Have you checked Costco? I''ve never used the 890 so can''t comment on that but would trust TGal''s experience. I''d check really carefully on the specs though and make sure its returnable. You know how I feel about my 850

When I was checking ebay before I wasn't finding anything thanks for the link! It's listed as 259.99 though.

AG: Costco only seems to have the 890 for 229.00.

Okay thanks all! I got a barely used 850IS from a seller with excellent feedback. He said he only took about 50 pics with it then got an SLR. It comes with a carrying case. His asking price was 200.00 but I made him an offer at 175 and won! I can''t wait to get it and start taking those awesome macro shots!
