I'll try to keep this as short as I can.
I'm married, but I don't like my engagement ring setting. It impractical to wear. I want a new setting for my existing stone.
I'm American, but live in the UK. I really like vintage-looking pieces, which I don't see often in the UK (suprisingly). I was in the US on vacation and fell in love with the ring pictured. The woman at the counter measured the stone in my existing ring and said it would be fine for this mount. In the end they couldn't get the ring in time for me.
I've now found the ring online. I called up the shop to order it, but when the next lady asked for my stone's measurements she said my stone is too large. The setting is made for 1ct / 6mm. My stone is 1.068 at 6.6mm (3.97).
I don't know whether to trust the first woman (who actually measured the stone), or the second.
Questions:
1) I've been to my local jeweler's (UK), and they've said they "don't work on American mounts" (WTH), that maybe someone else could set a 6.6mm stone in a setting for a 6mm stone, but no one can seem to tell me the odds that this would work. 50/50? 70/30? I get that no one can make guarantees, but jewelers must set stones that are slightly too large/small for settings all the time.
2) Moreover, where does this leave me? I'm pretty sure that I'll never run across a mount specifically meant for a 6.6mm stone.
3) My local jeweler has suggested designing something myself (*every* jeweler does) using CAD... my beef is that I'm afraid I'd end up with a "Frankenring" or something that looks like it was made in CAD... (this one was likely made that way but it was done well)... how difficult/costly would it be to create something in this spirit (filigree etc) starting from scratch?
