First let me introduce myself. I've been a long time lurker (well i guess 6 months)..haha but it seems longer and I've read through countless posts and I've learned a tremendous amount from all of you. I didn't want to have to reach out but now that I'm ready to pull the trigger I guess I'm getting a little stage fright at what to do.

After all of my analysis and from what I know my girlfriend wants from a ring (by guidance from her I get: solitaire round, thin platinum band, 4 prong and Sparkly!!!!...oh and bigger than her sister's ring :D )

So here is what I've come up with in order to maximize my money and still get what I think will look like a fantastic ring. I know that the cut is the most important but getting that ideal cut really ramps up the price considerably is what I find.

Cut specifications (This is my ideal but It seems that I'll need to compromise on some of these which is where I'll need help.)

Table: 52.5% - 57.5%
Crown Height: 15% - 16.2%
Crown Angle: 33.5% - 35.5%
Pavilion Depth %: 42.5% - 43.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.5 - 41 degrees
Total Depth: 59% - 61%
Cutlet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Florescence: none to Faint
Length to Width: 1:1 or close to it

Other Specifications
Color: G
Clarity: VS2 (Eye Clean) It could be mental but I feel like going below this is like hit or miss.
Certification: GIA
Size: 1.8 - 2 (I'd love to get to 2 carats somehow)

So this is where I am. I keep seeing numbers that I think are overpriced but maybe they aren't. I just don't know enough to really gauge the market. My ask is

1. If I was going to compromise on anything above to get to 2 carats which would it be? From reading your posts my cut parameters should have really good fire and if I go the 60/60 route it is more white and less fire. I'd really like it to sparkle and have the correct light angles reflecting through the stone but I'm sure I can move some of these parameters around.

2. If it were you buying this diamond or one similar to it, where would you buy it? I live in NYC but I'm also ok buying it online. This is really where the rubber meets the road and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone in advance. Excited to buy the ring but also nervous.

Budget?

For 2 carats I was thinking $20 - $22K but I can go up if there is something out there that is just a good deal. I hear stories from friends where they bought a VS2, G color that is 2 carats for $20K but they never tell you the cut specs on it so it could be all out of proportion. Not sure.

For 1.8 carats I'd like to keep it under $20K

between 1.8 and 2 the range is in between: So $18K - $20K.

For my specs for a 2 carat ring I see stuff up in the $27K (cheapest) and even much much higher range. Is that the range for these specs and I should fix my expectation or change my cut parameters?

Also it's a Round Diamond. That got kinda buried in my post above.

Everyone thanks again for taking the time!

Need to look at H and Si1 for your budget.

ok so with my cut specs it seems like the prices really are pushing $30K for 2 carats. That must mean that the people I know that bought $20K 2 carat rings just didn't have that great of a cut.

I should mention that I can't drop below a G color since that is what her sister has and it's something that I know is non negotiable. Identical twin so it has to be a G color as well. She isn't big on clarity just as long as she can't see anything.

Would it make sense to change any of the cut specs to get the price down? Or does everyone abide by the rule that Cut above all else do not compromise on Cut?

I would be willing to go up to $25K if that is really where the prices start for 2 carats or maybe 2 carats just aren't meant to be and I need to stay below 2 carats which is ok. I just want to make sure i'm looking at the correct vendors and looking at this the correct way. Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that 2ct G VS2 ideal cut has been 25K for the past several years, and now is pushing 30, so your friends may be getting EGL stones or something.

Also the difference between G and H is a very fine line.

JulieN super helpful so far. Thank you for confirming that those really are the prices for the specs that I want. $20K seemed to good to be true and people never reveal their cut specs. I guess b/c there are so many to rattle off.

Also what does transitional cut mean?

Old European cut: characterized by high crowns, small tables, fat/chunky arrows.

Modern Round Brilliant: crowns about 12-16%, tables in the mid 50s to low 60s, medium arrows.

Transitional: something in between these two. This one has fatter arrows than a regular MRB and 37 degree crown angle and 16% crown
height. Also has a thickish girdle which is knocking the spread a little bit.

Going in the opposite direction, these have lower crown angles so usually you're going to get a bit more spread out out of them:

I think you should be looking at eye clean G/SI1 stones. There are some on blue nile with promising numbers. Can you call Yekutiel at IDJ and tell him what you're looking for? He might be able to call in some stones for you. Although I did not buy from him, he found 2 eye clean F/SI2s around 2ct when I was looking for my upgrade.

Thank you. I'll give him a call. I guess I could stop by as well since I'm in NYC.

Thank you all for adding transparency to this opaque market. I feel like this market is less transparent than a lot of the capital markets on wall street. Lots of learn and everything looks the same! Well at least online. Please keep the advice coming :-)
