Hey guys,

I been searching for the perfect diamond for the past month or so. I've learned so much while looking and pricescope has been such a great forum to gain more insight and knowledge.

I think I have it boiled down to two diamonds at JA.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.36-carat-j-color-si2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-246688 - Scored 2.7 on HCA

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.30-carat-i-color-si2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-288516 - Scored 1.9 on HCA

I am wondering if the J vs. I color should really come into play for a $800 difference as well as the HCA score. Is a 2.7 still a diamond worth considering?

I know $800 in the long run isn't much but it is a bigger stone and any little bit helps on my budget.

So for a guy on a tight budget, do I go for the better HCA score and I color? Or is the $800 savings worth settling on a 2.7 J color?

My holds on these end midnight tonight so I have to make a decision by then.

Thanks so much for the input guys.

They're both very decent options, but it's very difficult to make a call without a couple pieces of information.
1. Do you have IdealScope images on these?
2. Are they both eye clean by your standards? The white inclusions in the table of both are probably difficult to spot, but I doubt they are eye clean. If they are not eye clean, I would choose other options.

Assuming they're both eye clean, going on the rotating images and reports alone, I would likely choose the I SI2.

What is your max budget? If those aren't eye clean, you can almost definitely find eye clean 1.2 ct I-J SI1-2 for 6500 on JA. Let us know if you want help finding other options.

I should mention that I am no expert. Both diamonds seem nice. While I don't feel the difference between a J and I is that significant, I'd be more inclined to purchase the 1.3. If they carried similar HCA scores, I'd move forward with the J 1.36. The extra $800 for both a better cut and an improved color would be worth it to me, but hey to each their own! :twirl:

Thanks for the input guys! Really appreciate the help.

1. I did not get an IS images on them, how do I go about requesting for such information?

2. The operators I spoke to on JA said they would be eye clean and very difficult to spot with the naked eye. I only have their word to take on it and I guess that is a risk I am taking to save a few $$$ with these inclusions and it being SI2.

Thanks for the suggestions on the 1.2 and 1.18, if it were up to me I'd go for that, but my gf has a case of the sizeitis and she really wants a 1.25+ stone.

Looking forward to hearing more feedback.

Thanks again!

Ask for the IS in chat or email

Yes, absolutely ask for IS's. I like the 1.3 I better, but let the gemologist look and get IS's to detect any leakage. These particular angle combos need IS's more than some others.

One other question is whether you are sure your girlfriend will be okay with a J color. I will say that it looks like a high J color, and the I looks like a low I... but the lighting is not completely standardized so it's hard to really tell.

Did she mention any other particular "must-haves" besides carat weight?

I just requested for the IS images and for a gemologist to take a look. Thanks so much for mentioning that. Also I took your recommendation on the 1.27 and had that added to the IS request.

I think when she initially started discussion diamonds with me I had the same amount of knowledge she did. Now that I have been researching for the past month, I don't think she put a lot of things into consideration aside from carat size. The only thing besides carat size she wanted is an eye-clean diamond, which I am trying to get away with with an SI2 (not sure if that is like chasing a four leaf clover or not).

Thanks again for your additional feedback!

Sounds good. Beware that the 1.27 is definitely a true J. It may help to call a local Hearts on Fire dealer and see if they stock any J's. Then compare w/ I's to see what your tolerance is. Tiffany does not carry J's.
