No, dont worry- we''ll still be getting married I am just having serious thoughts about canceling the wedding we''ve been planning!!

I am bad about sharing bits and pieces about my personal life because I don''t want to bore you all (god knows we all have problems) and I don''t want to come across as someone who cant handle the hand of cards I was dealt. But in this case, I will give you a brief cliff''s notes version of my background.

I am the eldest child in my family. My parents divorced when I was only 2 months old (my mother just couldnt stand my father anymore) and she moved us down to Florida from NC. Both my parents got remarried quite a few years later to new people two weeks apart from one another (can we say crazy time??!). My father had three additional daughters with his new wife and my mother had two sons with her new husband- all within 5 years.

My mother is still married, my eldest brother just went off to college and announced that he is planning on marrying his mormon girlfriend in June (they have been dating since August).

My father and his wife divorced a number of years ago and is now planning engaged to a woman who is 21 (much younger than myself). And to top it off my sister (also 21) got married in July of 2006, so I am not the first one to get married.

Here is my dilemma- my parents (mom and dad) do NOT get along. My father pretends to be all sweet to my mom and my mom just flat out cant stand him. Since we are having a small wedding in the mountains of NC (no traditional anything), I didnt think it was weird that my mom asked to walk me down the aisle. After all, she raised me and we are uber close (despite the fact that I moved 3000 miles away to San Fran). My father catches wind of this scenario and calls to yell at me for an hour discussing how I am a thoughtless daughter and how walking me down the aisle is a "man''s role" and that by not allowing him to do it is a measurement of how much (or lack I guess) I love him. In all honesty I dont feel like we are close enough to have him walk me down the aisle- we''ve never had a great relationship. I even thought of having my mother''s father (almost like a father to me) walk me down to save the peace (we should call him Switzerland!) but I know that will still displease my father.

My mother can''t offer to contribute any money to the wedding because having my brother in college and my second brother about to start college in a few years she is strapped. No biggie- I was going to make this an inexpensive as I could and FI and I would just pay for it ourselves. Dad offered to give me the same amount of money he gave my sister for her wedding- not a lot, but generous regardless.

Since FI''s parents live in FL as do mine, we decided since it was a long drive for them to come to the wedding we would rent out a cabin to have them all stay. Not expensive, and very beautiful. Since my father''s family lives in NC I didnt even think that they would need accomodations too.

However, now that my father is playing this game of "if you do for your mom, you should do for me" I now feel obligated to book them a cabin as well. And even though he is offering us some money for the wedding, the costs are just spiraling out of control now and I just dont want to spend the money.

FI and I are thinking of moving back to the east coast (most likely NC) next fall and the prospect of buying a house is a big money issue for us. I have finally come to the conclusion that I would rather not spend the money on this wedding, elope here in SF, and spend the money we would have spend as part of a down payment on a house.

I know this has been disgustingly long but I seriously need some opinions. What would you all do? Save the money (and my sanity for that reason trying to deal with my family) or go through with it knowing it will be fun but still having the potential for a family feud (and how embarrassing too in front of FI''s sweet family!!)

Oh Shigidigi! That really is a terrible situation. BUT - from what you are telling me, if this were me, the decision would be easy for me....I would elope...to Vegas (although, that was what I wanted to do for my own wedding, but FMIL begged me not to) - so take my opinion with a grain of salt, because I''m somewhat biased to elopement!

Hope everything works out!

If (and only if) you can be equally happy sans big-wedding-shebang... GO FOR THAT! Under the circumstances, it''s quite possible that the stress of the situation will only get worse and/or harder to keep under control. Especially with the added financial pressure of a home purchase, I can definitely see the "no wedding" side of the argument.

Have you talked about all your concerns with your FI yet? He will have much better insight than we ever could.

Elope, elope, ELOPE!! I wish we could, but instead I''m stuck planning a wedding. Almost every bride I''ve talked to said that their wedding was a wonderful event, but if they had to do it over again they would skip all the planning/family/money stress and elope (or at least do a DW).

A wedding is just a day - it''s the marriage and your future that counts.

Thanks guys, it means a lot to hear that I am not crazy for wanting to elope.

FI and I spoke about it this morning and he thinks it is a great idea, he just wants to make sure I wont regret having a wedding so he said to think about it for another week or so before making a decision. He has been very supportive.

My mom thinks eloping is a great idea (it is the normal route in my family- weddings are unusual) but it is FMIL that really wants this wedding, especially since FI is an only child.

My thought was to have FMIL and FFIL out (perhaps my mom too) and get married in the park below the Golden Gate Bridge. This way I can wear my dress and FMIL will be happy having seen her son get married.

I think it may be iffy to get my deposit back on our rockin photographer in NC, but I thought perhaps FI and I could go to NC to look at potential places to live and stop back by Asheville and have the photographer take some mock wedding photos of us in our fancy wear. (getting to wear dress again is a plus!) that way we will have nice photos just like if we had had a wedding. I think that is the only thing I would regret not having- nice photos to look back on.

I just want to be married because I have found such a wonderful person- having a whole slew of my crazy family members there to witness it is NOT a requirement.

Go for it and elope! And may I recommend a location? I just got married in SF in Fort Mason park at what is called the "Parade Grounds". There is this tree that creates a natural canopy where you can stand and it overlooks the bridge. Plus it is a lot more private than Crissy field.

If it were ME (and we basically did this on a bit grander of a scale), invite just those people who you are super close to. Then go have some yummy food and celebrate!

But I'm biased because we had such a gorgeous day!

Oops, see post below!

Ok HERE is the spot! Right behind us is the GG bridge, which you can see perfectly on nice days.

Hi - I just had to chime in. No, you are not crazy for wanting to elope. This day is about what you and your FF want, not about what your mom, dad and family want. If you keep up this scenario, you will be stark raving mad by the time you get to the altar. I vote for eloping and I think your idea of just inviting a select few to witness the nuptials is a great idea. I am speaking from personal experience. I had the big huge wedding the first time around. It was all about pleasing others and it was a production, really. We had 200 guests. I just got remarried in Sept. We had the most beautiful wedding in Vegas at the Flamingo Resort Chapel. It literally took 2 phone calls to arrange the wedding. All we had to do was show up in our wedding attire. We didn''t send out invitations but the wedding was available to view online. We planned on it just being the 2 of us, but told everyone if you want to come, this is where and when. We didn''t want anyone to feel obligated. Both sets of parents came to the wedding and my 16 year old son walked me down the aisle. It was so special and meaningful. My friends and family who viewed it live on the internet all cried. They said it was just beautiful - the most touching ceremony they had seen in a long time. So I guess my point is, that you need to make yourself happy and do what is best for you. Don''t try to please everyone else. I''m all for saving the money and getting the house! Good luck to you. I wish you all the best.

Neatfreak, thanks for the recommendation on the spot to have an elopement! That is a gorgeous location and I love it.

Floridagirl I appreciate your story- I definitely do not want to have the big wedding just to please others. I hadn''t thought about leaving an open invitation to family members saying if you want to come great! It will be here at this time/date.

I would like to have a special moment, I just dont want my blood pressure to keep going up to have it! (I had to stop myself from continually going to walgreens to test it because it has been so astronomically high lately! If I keep this up we''ll be having a wedding in the hospital!)

One more question though- I feel like such a rube having already sent out "save the date" cards. How on earth would one go about informing people of the change? Not send out invitations at all and send out elopement notices after we''ve gotten hitched (think surfgirl style)?

Uh, the thought of having to explain to these people why we arent doing the whole wedding thing makes me a bit nauseous...

shigi, you know what I''m gonna say, right? ELOPE! But you know, do it like I did, give yourselves a mini wedding. It can be just the two of you or a few close friends but dont deny yourself your special day if that''s what you really want! You CAN elope and still have a dress, bridal bouquet, photographer, wedding dinner, wedding cake, etc. If you cant get your photog deposit back, why not keep her but ask to modify your package to both make it cheaper and gear it towards an elopement. If you wanted to get married outside, in the woods or whatever, go for it. Just do it with you two, or a small group. Trust me, it''ll be PERFECT and you wont have any family messiness...

Definitely elope at this point.

Two of my friends did this and were very glad they did. They wore full wedding attire, had some lovely flowers, hired a really good photographer to take some lovely photos and then went off on a short honeymoon.

When they got back they threw a party for all their family and friends - and announced their week wedding anniversary. Not even their parents knew.

Re the STDs, is it just family you have invited? What number of people did you invite?

I think the option of having just your closest relatives/friends with you under GG bridge is a great idea. You still get to have some aspects of the wedding, like wearing the dress at a gorgeous location in front of the family, without having to deal with the expenses and family stress of an actual wedding.

As for the STDs, I think you''d want to send out something before the date your wedding was going to be, people may have already made travel plans, asked off work, etc., so you want to give them time to change their plans. I''d enlist the help of family and MOH if you have one and bite the bullet and make some phone calls to explain that due to unfortunate circumstances, the wedding (not the marriage) has been cancelled.

I really do think eloping is my best bet, but my big dilemma is the father vs. mother feud. I love my father dont get me wrong, but we really are not that close anymore and more than anyone else in the family he has a tendency to make me upset. I would love to just invite a few relatives (ie- mom and grandparents) but am afraid if I dont invite my dad all hell will break loose.

What would you do- invite mom sans dad or invite both (which is what I am kinda trying to get away from by canceling the big(er) wedding. I really dont want to hurt my father''s feelings and I just dont know what to do.

oh honey, go ahead and elope. Nobody should have this much stress. And besides, a wedding should be about a marriage, not about pleasing others. We had hell planning our wedding and had some really bad luck (think racist in-laws, father lost his job and lied about financial issues- we wish he was honest, we didn''t need the money *sigh*, parents in bad health). And the list goes on. We decided to get some rings and go to court and get married and let me tell you, it was awesome! my husband and I, overlooking the Los Angeles basin. (the courthouse at LAX is awesome). How many of you say that your wedding location had a helipad on top? Haha.

well. . . we''re fine with the no-wedding, but my mum and dad are well now and wish that we would''ve had a special day. so we are. we''re planning a vow renewal with the whole she-bang for May 2008. At this point, his parents are cut off from our lives, so no stress there, my parents are healthier, and we don''t have that "supposed to be the best day ever" stress. We already had our day, and it was perfect.

just an idea. :-)

Totally agree. Do a mini-wedding in SF. If you want to invite FI''s parents, do so. If you want to ask mom to walk you down the aisle, do so. They shouldn''t have to miss out because your father is being an a**. It seems to me that he''s being the problem, so he''s the one to omit.

If you have a THISCLOSE handful of friends, invite them. If NC photographer can''t come to SF, write it off (still a huge savings compared to your NC alternate nightmare). Do the dress/bouquet, get another photog if needed.

Perhaps you can host them at a local restaurant for a meal afterward. The restaurant can do a cake, I''m sure.

This would give you a way to avoid all the drama and still give your FI''s family/your mom/YOU a way to celebrate this time.

Ok, I got sidetracked/delayed, and by the time I posted, you''d posted again.

I really do think eloping is my best bet, but my big dilemma is the father vs. mother feud. What this says to me: You''re not eloping because that''s what you want; you''re eloping as a way to avoid drama. So, there''s no reason you shouldn''t have SOMETHING.

I just really feel that it''s your dad who''s the source of the stress......and that''s who I''d omit. It seems that he''s more concerned with ''making sure I get what she (mom) gets'' and less concerned with ''what will make my daughter happy''. Do you think that warrants being invited to your wedding? I don''t.

Frankly, he''s probably going to be tweaked if you elope anyway, so you''re really in a no-win situation. Therefore, I''d do EXACTLY what you want, and he''ll have to find a way to get over it. You''ve already specified that you''re not close to him, so I don''t see where you''re jeopardizing a cherished relationship. Don''t get bullied by misplaced ''obligation''. It''s your life, honey.....do what you want, and let him find a way to come to terms.

You''re in a no-win situation....if you don''t ''hurt'' his feelings, then you''ll hurt your FI''s mom''s (disappoint her by missing the wedding she wants to attend). That seems kind of unfair seeing that she''s not the source of the stress/tension.

I would be thrilled to elope in Vegas, but my BF said it was tacky. Sigh. I''ll be sure to remind him of that if/when we do get married and are spending gads of money! :)

I think a part of me feels bad for admitting "I" want a special day. You know how were are raised to feel guilty when we think of ourselves and not EVERYONE else we normally think of. I think putting on my pretty wedding dress and getting dolled up say my vows in front of FI''s parents and my mom would be a wonderful way to get married.

I guess it sounds like I have made up my mind, huh? Thank you all for being so kind in giving me words of encouragement- it is so awesome to have a place to come and vent about life''s crazinesses and get advice from women who are going or have gone through similar stuff.

You gals are right- I can still have my cake (mmm schubert''s princess cake anyone??!) and eat it too- on my wedding day.

I think once I get past the guilt I will start to get excited again.

Now to start purging old wedding stuff I wont need anymore... anyone need 41 cocoa colored pocket folds for invitations?

Oh shigi, it sounds like you are making the right decision. Trust me - trying to please your father will only widen the gap between you. Weddings really exacerbate any fundamentally flawed family relationships, and in my case, it really made things worse. So take comfort in knowing that you are doing the right thing for you and for your FI and even, in a sort of strange way, for your dad and the rest of your family. I can''t wait to hear about your intimate, special day!

Repeat this to yourself : I do what makes everyone else happy everyday. I deserve MY WEDDING DAY to be about ME!

Then invite those closest to you, get a fab dress, and have a ball!!!!!

And I can highly highly recommend all of my vendors to you, they all rocked, so if you have any questions...just let me know!

It is possible to "elope" to Vegas and do it with class.

My husband and I had a mini-DW/semi-elopment at the Bellagio. We had a Thursday afternoon wedding, with a photographer for an hour, and about 25 of our friends and family. I didn''t have the close family drama you have, dear, but I have an enormous family (Mom is the oldest of 10, I have 30something cousins just on her side, the family list is beyond 120 people so we said screw it, we''re getting married in Vegas in a few weeks, and we only have room for 20.)

We then had a dinner to follow at a family friends'' home, and the whole wedding week (5 days), including airfare from Dallas, lodging at the Bellagio (discounted suites for the bride and groom), the wedding, the reception, and various other associated costs was less than $4k and we splurged in a few places.

However, I think Neatfreak''s location in SF is to absolutely die for. Do whatever you feel comfortable with, because at the end of the day, it is all about you and your husband-to-be, and not about the guests - family or not.

Wanting a few close loved ones and friends around to watch you say I Do and then celebrate with you is NOT selfish, in fact, you are trying to be unselfish. Yes, you would like to avoid drama, but not just for you, but for your mom etc. I think eloping may not be the right term. You would just be having a small intimate wedding with a small number of people. Now, I hate to say it, but if you do this, I am sure your dad will be hurt. Does he agree that the two of you are not close like you used to be? He was going to give you money to get married. I would bet he may not see things as you do. (and I am NOT saying he is in the right, just how one person might see it). There may be some fall out from this, but if you have the larger wedding and have to go tit for tat to make him happy, and know you are upsetting your mom, there will be fall out there too. Life hands us some interesting dilemas. Just know if he does find out you went of without him, in his mind that could be a large issue that is hard for him to forget. If you can tell him that you love him, but do not feel as close to him right now, and that you had to think of the larger issues at hand, well, maybe if he is a mature man he will accept that. He loves you, so hopefully in time he would get over it and just be happy to be part of your life. I just wish for you that is was more simple, you want to please your mom and your fiance''s mom, and also yourself, and not upset your dad if possible, but doing it all may not be that easy. Go with your heart, when you look back on your day it should mostly be happy.

First things first, if you cancel the wedding after sending save-the-dates, you are supposed to notify people extremely promptly so they can free up the date they have been saving and not make any more travel plans. So don't wait until after the elopement to send "You missed it!" announcements.

As for the rest, of course it is OK to elope but you should really think about if this is the right decision for the right reasons. It is the right reason if you really don't want the NC wedding anymore for cost reasons. It is the right decision if you are thrilled with the SF location (or Vegas!) and a super-small wedding and will not miss the extra guests. And it is the right decision to invite your FILs and your mother but not your father if your relationship with your father is so strained that you are fine with possibly damaging it more.

This is the father that threw a hissy-fit over not walking you down the aisle, don't you think that inviting your mother and FI's parents to your new wedding and not him MIGHT be seen as a significant snub?

Yes your father is being a bit of a tool, and his patriarchal rant about walking your down the aisle is indefensible if understandable, but you did throw him some ammo by accepting his offer of wedding money (his money is good enough for you?) and then planning to use it to fund your mother's lodging, your FIL's lodging, but not his lodging for the wedding. And then somehow telling him this. In 20/20 hindsight, it would have been much safer to let the families each fund their own lodging...

But presumably there is a lot of father-daughter backstory and you might not want your father at your wedding and are prepared to deal with what this does to your relationship with him. Or you might now him well enough to know this is the tip of the iceberg of his antics and want to bail out now on father-involvement with wedding. But if the situation is not that severe...

... you could go forward with the NC wedding IF you want to. I think it would involve telling your father that your mother is walking you down the aisle and he needs to deal with that, but coming up with some compromise on the lodging situation. Having your father give you less but cover his own lodging, obscuring the funding mechanisms for everyone's lodging (by having people pay their own way or just telling your father you aren't discussing it), or just up and apologizing for your oversight but begging poverty... but only if its what you want, as eloping or downsizing the wedding will probably save you money and possibly save you stress!

Guys, thank you all once more. Last night was the best night''s sleep I have had in weeks!

I think FI and I are definitelt going to do the small wedding here (or Vegas- who knows!) and as for who to invite, we may just do FI''s parents as well as FI''s best friend for a best man and my best girlfriend.

This way we can celebrate with our respective families as we see them and I dont have to worry about offending my father. He did call yesterday evening to apologize for his tirade and he understands that we have a lot of work to do to get our relationship back on track.

In the end, more than anything I just dont want to spend the money on the NC wedding. Yes it would be wonderful, people would have a good time, but our savings and credit cards would be hurting after and frankly that just isnt worth it.

FI even said last night that he was a bit relieved that we would do the tiny wedding here- he is very shy and was dreading having to "socialize" with so many people at once.

So over all, it is the best decision (one I do not think I would have come to any time soon if it werent for you awesome ladies!!)

Pandora, we had only sent out Save the Dates to about 70 people, and thankfully all but about 15 are family so I bet we can get the family gossip wheel turning if only to help circulate the news. This will buy me some time to create a nice card that we can send out to everyone informing them that we wish to say our vows in private.

Hey Neatfreak, do you mind sharing who your photographer was? I think it will feel like a real wedding (no matter how small) if I get a photographer to document the moment!

I am starting to get excited again about a wedding and that is a good sign. And now I can get excited about a house too because I wont be in debt either!!

Thanks again everyone! I promise I will share photos and all that good stuff when I get them!

I think you''ve made a sound choice, and one that seems to be the best fit for you. The fact that your FI feels ''relieved'' and that you feel excited again are both really strong signs that you''ve made a great decision.

In your shoes, I think I''d still invite your mom to come for the wedding.

There are two root issues here....one is that you didn''t want to blow the money for a big to-do, and that is solved by choosing the SF mini-wedding. The other is that you didn''t want family drama/stress. Since she wasn''t the one causing the tension, it somehow seems unfair that she should have to miss a significant event in your life through no fault of her own. She wasn''t the source of the tension.

You have a close relationship with her. In that position, it wouldn''t feel right to me not to invite my mom.

I do think (despite what she says) that my mom would be sad to not be there. And I would really love for her to be there.

It would really anger my father if she was invited and not him. Question is, is it really terrible to not tell him she is coming? If I dont tell him he will never know so it is a difficult decision.

Plus if I tell him it will likely cause me more stress to hear him yelling about it, so I would just assume not say anything.

Does that make me a terrible daughter?

In your position, I wouldn''t feel obligated to fill him in on anything.

I''d simply say ''we''ve decided that we''re not going to do the big wedding in NC; we''d prefer to put the money toward a down payment.'' and leave it at that.

If he asks, you can say ''we''ve decided to just do a very private ceremony here.'' If he asks about details, I''d likely say "There''s not really much to tell; we''re going to get married here without the big ceremony, and we''ll celebrate after the fact with our families when we come to NC."

You don''t have a close relationship with him; you aren''t obligated to run your plans by him. It''s enough to say "we decided we just aren''t comfortable spending the $$ on an ''event'', and we''re comfortable and happy with our decision and plans, and we hope you''ll respect our choice."

Is he likely to flat out ask you "is your mother coming?"

I''m so glad you and your FI have decided on a wedding that is right for you and that you can be excited about!
36.gif

But... I''d suggest that you bite the bullet and take care of that STD thing right away. This is one of those times when doing it faster trumps doing it perfectly. If you take the word of mouth path now, you''ll start to question whether you need to follow up with written announcements later anyway -- or feel silly about it. In the long run, I think it''ll be easier on you if you and FI don''t postpone this part. Besides, getting the un-announcement out will allow you to really bury the old wedding and move on to the new streamlined version!

aljdewey, I doubt my dad would press the "is your mother coming", so good points- only tell him what he needs to know.

and minims I think you are totally right. I need to bite the bullet and send out notices right away about the "cancellation" of the big wedding. At least this means I can still have fun with some sort of invitation-like announcement. (I had so much fun creating our invitations just never printed them). That way it will still look classy and everyone will know that we dont want to prevent them from changing their plans, but we do want to be respectful in announcing our new wedding.
