Im going to the jewelers very soon to finalize my ring design (https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/advice-on-diamond-and-ring.103662/). Im assuming they will want me to pay before they start, so I''m preparing for the negotiation. I am using an online diamond, but a B&M jeweler to make the ring. Do people normally negotiate the price of the shank/halo, or just the diamond? Can anyone give me advice on how much they were able to negotiate? I realize this depends on the original asking price, but Im just curious. I am also being charged a mounting fee for the online diamond, so that is another consideration. Thanks!

I'm not sure I get it...though only scanned through the text you linked to. Do you have an agreement with the person whom you would have do your ring, or no? If yes...this is the wrong time to negotiate. If no...(seems not the case), since this is custom, I presume you'll come to an agreement, at which point, they would start. In this latter case, before agreeing to start, the general phrase, to some effect: "Is that the best price you can give me," with the understanding that you're deciding whether to work together or not...is very generic advice I can offer.

But...something tells me you're in the middle, which is no place to be, and to still be wanting to negotiate a price. If this is your case, it is I think what they call "whining," not negotiating.

Sorry if I've misunderstood the circumstance.

My suggestion for negotiation is getting a few different quotes so you can compare and come to a fair price together.

Thanks so much for the response. I certainly have not committed to the jeweler in any way (and have paid nothing so far), but I have been working on the design for a while, so I think we both know that I''m not really considering another jeweler. Its still ok to ask for a lower price, right?
