Hi PS'ers!!

I wanted to ask how you guys with bigger knuckles chose your ring size? I am worried that I am choosing one that is too tight simply because I want it to spin as little as possible when it is all the way on my finger. I struggle a lot getting my 2.2mm ring, sized 4.5 past my knuckle. I actually have to bend my finger a little to get it off. Then when it is on, it spins a little, which is fine by me. But am I not supposed to struggle so much? My 3.8mm wedding band is a b*tch to get on or off. Is that a bad idea over time? Do fingers/knuckles get bigger, even without weight gain? Is this constant wiggling and scooting bad for the finger?

You need to get a size that can slide over your knuckle comfortably. Either get sizing beads soldered on to prevent spinning or a Euroshank style ring (squared off bottom). I think knuckles do get a bit larger over time, especially those plagued with arthiritis.

Chrono is correct LLJsmom. In my case I need a size 5 to go over my knuckle even though my ring size is a 4.5. I have sizing bridges put in my rings to stop the spinning. So sizing beads or sizing bridges can help. There are also ring bands that open that can be added to a ring top. I forgot the name of these but I'm sure your jeweler would know.

You can see the sizing bridge on the back of my ring in this photo.....

My knuckle is significantly larger than my actual finger. My knuckle is about a 6.25ish and my finger is about a 5. I have my rings sized just over a 6, like a 6.25 tight. Then I have sizing beads inside. That helps a lot with the spinning. I still have trouble in the morning and when it's gnarly outside getting them on, but for the better part of the year and day, that works fine.

There are a number of arthritic shanks that are available to be installed as a replacement shank on your ring. The most popular are from Fingermate, which opens up to 3 sizes larger to go over a knuckle, and Superfit, which actually opens and is on a hinge so you can disregard the knuckle completely. Most competent jewelers have access to either or both and can quote you pricing.
