Hi! Please tell me what I'm seeing with this diamond/your opinion. I apologize, I don't know any technical terms. But when I look at the center of this diamond, all I see is a circle with straight lines through it whereas when I look around the outside of the diamond I see more of the sparkle.

First question is: Can you return the diamond, or are you committed to this one?

If you have to live with this, then we will help you see the best in it.

That's a good question. I'm going to go tomorrow and talk with them and see what my options are. We just got engaged this past weekend. I haven't even told my fiancée about it bc I feel so bad. I feel like such an idiot bc I am the one that picked this stone. When I saw it in the store I didn't see it and was just excited about the size and sparkle and it checked all thr boxes for color, clarity, etc. When he gave it to me and I saw it outside of the store I saw it immediately. So hopefully they will work with me.

Report back once you have talked to the store - and please don't feel bad. It is so easy to get caught up in the flashy things in the store with their amazing store lighting and sales pitches. The entire store is designed to make everything in it sparkle and shine. Is there any info on the receipt or their website about the return policy?

And please - talk with your fiancée about it. (Congratulations by the way!!!). When we bought our diamond, it was expensive and pretty but then I second guessed everything and felt bad and didn't want to tell him because it was so expensive for us - but when I told him, it was like a weight was lifted, and we figured it all out. And - the diamond I was second guessing? Was stunning. Absolutely beautiful. But I got stuck in my head.

I'm not familiar enough with anything but round diamonds, so can't offer advice - and really advice isn't helpful until you know what your options are, which means you need input from the store.

If you can return - I'd suggest returning. There are other diamonds out there, and the people here are super helpful at getting you squared away with a diamond that feels good to you. And that's the thing - the diamond you have doesn't feel good to you. So if you can return - do that, and find a ring that feels better to you. And if you can't return, then the folks here can help you understand more about your diamond (other folks, not me, cuz again - I don't know much about this) and what makes it good.

ahahahaha this is a much wordier version of the advice that 0515vision gave you!

Thank you for your reply!! You are totally right. I'm going to go there tomorrow and see what they say and go from there! I'll keep you posted! Fingers crossed.

Sorry I replied to you but didn't type it in the "reply" section to you. But to add to my other reply to you, do you mind educating me a little bit on what I'm seeing so it seems like I know a little bit about what I'm talking about when I go to the store tomorrow?

I’m not an expert the way other PSers are, so hopefully I won’t misuse terms. And if somebody corrects me, go with what they say.

Ideally, you don’t ever see through a diamond (unless it’s deliberate, like in portrait, cut diamonds). You’re seeing through your stone to the band underneath. When a stone is cut well the light is reflected back to your eye.

I believe the term is “windowing“ when you can see through to the other side. But this is where I might have the wrong term and if so, would be glad to be corrected.

It’s OK that you chose the stone. This is how you learn!

There are tools that can help you assess the quality of the cut. Since you’re going to the store tomorrow, you could ask to see other potential candidate stones put in temporary stone holders or open settings. Then make sure you don’t see your hand or the band through the stone.

Can we ask who the retailer is? Is this a final sale, or if you’re unhappy? Are you able to get a refund?

Congratulations again on your engagement! Good luck on this diamond journey!
