Looking for some proposal ideas. Nothing very extravagant or expensive. I want to keep it fairly simple and romantic.
I don't want to do anything public.

Hi;
I dont know how much you are into cooking/decorating. but you could set up your place in a romantic way with flowers and candles and then have dinner at your place and maybe bring out a tray for dessert and have the ring in its box on the plate or something along those lines. Thats the frist idea that came to my head. I dont know what else to suggest without knowing the area you live in etc.
Take care and good luck

Phil

Maybe give us some clues about you and your soon-to-be fiance? That would make it a lot easier to give suggestions!
hobbies? general area you live in? interests? are either of you into nature - computers - books - magazines - animals - etc?

There are so many possibilities (as you can see from all the previous proposal stories posted here!) that you can taylor your proposal to fit you guys as a couple and still have it be simple and romantic....

South Jersey near Philly.
She loves to read and do various crafts.
She does like animals, but my asthma and allergies prevent that.

What kind of crafts does she like? Maybe you can make something with the words "will you marry me" on it, and present it to her? Or have a "craft night" where you both make something and yours happens to say "will you marry me"?

depending on the type of crafts she likes you could make up a "craft kit" -- and have the end result have the "will you marry me" or some variation on it (like a card design or scrapbook page design, puzzle, sewing or something?) ?

I know a couple of guys who have done the "highlgiht passages in books" thing, or you could make her a bookmark and put it in whatever book she was currently reading?

the craft night thing might be good if you have ever participated in anything like that before -- otherwise she would probably get the hint right away what was happening -- unless you didn''t care if she "saw it coming"

I think a fun craft idea would be to paint some pottery of some sort. Where I am there are several pottery studios where you can go in an paint a piece that they will then fire for you. They have everything from photo frames to serving platters. They even allow you to bring in a bottle of wine (or other drink of choice) for a date night. I think it would be cute to do something like that with will you marry me on it. That way she could always have a display piece to remember the moment.

I like this idea! It''s really fun! Or, an alternate plan could be to make some sort of keepsake box, perhaps in the shape of a heart or something, but not propose then. I think with these places, you have to pick up your finished, fired item a couple days later. You could then offer to pick your stuff up for her, and when you get it home to show her, have the ring in the heart box as a surprise.
