I have purchased a 1.23ct Pink Tourmaline, it was cut by Barry (no pictures of my own as I dont have the stone yet), this is my first colored stone purchase :appl: the color is stunning, anyway since I am all new to this I have a question, the stone is 6.8mm round, so when looking for a semi-mount what size should I look for? I cannot afford a custom setting so it will have to be a stock setting and most that I have seen are for 6.5mm or 7.00 so which size would be best? and do you have any advice for me, from what I have read tourmaline is not a real hard stone, I think I read it is 7 to 7.5 on the hardness scale, so will I have to be careful with the ring? can the stone go in the ultrasonic? i have a really cheap ultrasonic, it doenst heat up or have steam it just uses water and cleaner and then you just put the ring in the little basket and it "shakes" the ring around...I dont intend to wear it all the time, but only once in awhile, but I do like some sparkly stones. Thanks

hmmm maybe I can show a picture, this isnt my picture, but the person's I bought it from, I just love this color

Look for a mounting with a 7mm head. You will probably need a basket head instead of a peg with V prongs in order to accommodate the extra depth usually found in colored stones.

The tourmaline is beautiful. I hope it won't be your last colored stone purchase. Stick around. We have a good time over here!!

Thanks Uppy, since I havent purchased a color stone before I didnt know about the depth, I have been admiring everyones stunning rings on here and I have been hooked more everytime I drool, I mean look at the pretty colors on here, thank you for your advice, this is my first purchase, but it wont be my last :Up_to_something:

You should be fine with a 7 mm round stock setting. If you are getting a pave setting for the tourmaline, I do not advice putting it into an ultrasonic if it is one of the Chinese made ones because a melee or two might fall out. If it is an all metal setting, it should be fine although I dislike US for gemstones in general because it can sometimes be difficult to keep track of which ones are safe and which aren’t recommended. It's not just the softness that has to be taken into account but the type of inclusions within the stone.

Thank you Chrono, I would love pave setting, but dont think that will happen, but you never know lol, I think I remember you talking about colored stones and inclusions within in the stone, I guess thats why I was asking, to be safe I think I will keep it out of the US and just use to regular stuff in a jar.

I am suppose to get the stone sometime today, glad today is my day off I am excited, lol
