Hello,

Can anyone share your thoughts/comments on the following stone? It was shown by a local jewelry shop. I'm trying to get an engagement ring to propose to my gf. Will be going back to the store again this week to look at the stone. The total price I got with 18k white gold setting is ~$10k. Any other suggestions for me when I go back to the store to look at it again is much appreciated. TIA!

This is not a stone we'd recommend. It will be very flat in profile and not sparkle much. Have you seen these articles?

Are you open to buying online? This is an example of a stone I'd recommend. Super ideal cut with superior light return, and Whiteflash has one of the best upgrade policies in the business.

Hi Kim, Thank you for your comments. I haven't seen those articles yet and will go through them. I'm open to buying online and actually might just do that. I'm very afraid to make the wrong purchase at the store and really just want to get the best "cut" with my budget. It is really difficult to know the stone light performance at the store and the local jewelers do not help much in explaining it.

I agree, jewelry store lighting will make even the poorest cut stones look good and does not help you see how the stone will perform in your day-to-day life. You have an excellent budget which can get you a superbly cut stone. Do you have a picture of the setting you were looking to get?

I really hope to get a brilliant stone :)
I'm thinking of a halo setting as shown below and prefer the prong to be "blend" into the stone and make it less visible. 60% of small stone around the ring. Just thinking of something simple and modern look. Appreciate any comments :) Thank you.

That is a beautiful setting. Whiteflash could custom-make this setting for you, or they have a Simon G halo setting which looks very similar.

David Klass Jewelry is a vendor in Los Angeles known for doing beautiful custom work as well. Many members on the forum have had rings made by him. You'd just have the diamond vendor ship the diamond directly to him.

I found a couple more diamonds that might work for you.

Hello and welcome to PriceScope, mamasai!
Echoing what the others have said:
The diamond from your local jeweler has poor proportions and angles, so light performance will suffer.

You could consider moving to a J color for an exceptionally well cut diamond and it will provide an excruciating amount of white light return and fire.

Check this one out (and contact Whiteflash to put it on hold ASAP so someone else doesn't snipe it - lots and lots of anonymous visitors come to PriceScope every day).
It has a mouth-watering 40.7/34.9/54.9 combo with a puffy huge 15.7% crown height and is a completely clean SI1!

You'll also get WF's lifetime upgrade policy of any diamond in stock of equal or higher value - and 50% trade-in credit on most of their setting (verify that any setting which catches your eye qualifies for this).

Paired with the gorgeous setting that Kim N suggested:

Your wire price would be $6766 diamond + $2775 setting = $9541, and you may be able to get another $100 off by signing up on WF's website and getting a coupon/discount code.

I think this is a win-win and will blow your mind once you see it.

Some other shops that you can check out are Brian Gavin, Victor Canera, Distinctive Gem, and Diamonds by Lauren - there are many, many others that PS'ers have worked with, so hopefully some members will chime in and keep the suggested vendor list growing for you to look into.

Thank you for your suggestion! I think I'm more inclined to buying online now with the help from the community! I think I want to stay in the DEF colorless range no Fluorescence (my gf is okay with smaller stone 1C min) and VS2 (or better) and I'm willing to spend up to $10k on the stone. Feel free to let me know if there are any recommendations that I can check out! Thank you :)

What do you think of these?

At this size, I think a G or even H would be quite safe and would allow you to go a little bigger. G-H is considered a sweet spot for many.

Can’t wait to see what you choose. Love to see people getting guided to the sparkliest stones by @DejaWiz and @Kim N. An ACA will be the best of the best and will blow the jeweler’s stone out of the water:)

This 1.024 F - oooooooooh - great suggestion, Kim N!
