First of all I''d like to say hello to everyone and thanks in advance, as this is my first post!
Here''s my situation/question: I recently got a got engaged with a three stone ring. We both picked it out together about a year ago and i love it, but I''m starting to think I want something bigger. Its 1ct total, .5 center .25 sides. (i''ve been lurking the board awhile and i''ve noticed it pales in comparison to some of yours;)

SO, getting to the point I was thinking that instead of getting a wedding band to go with the three stone ring, getting a 1ct solitaire and using the 3 stone as my wedding band.

have any of you seen this done? i havent actually tried a solitaire on with it, so i''m having a hard time visualizing it. the 3 stone ring has sort of a scott kay look to it with the bezel set diamonds on the outside of the prongs. i''m curious if the solitaire would need to be very raised to set it apart from the other ring.

any opinions would be helpful

Hi JaiJai,
Welcome to PS!!! Can you post a pic of your ring??

i will try and post a pic as soon as possible, at work at the moment. its a very basic three stone, but raised slightly

... this sounds right.

Actually, I don't know if the rings could be made to fit no matter how high the solitaire would be.

But... how about changing the current center stone with a larger one? Maybe you could even trade the current one in - if the seller has a suitable upgrade policy. Otherwise, you would end up with a half carat pendant - for example. How bad can it be

I can''t picture a solitaire looking right with the 3 stone on the same finger. But, what if you made one a RHR and the other keep on your left hand with a wedding band?
I also like the idea of trading up!

Of course, the best answer is for you to try it in person. And if it works for you, then do whatever will make you happy!

From what you are describing though, I''m not sure it would work for me. I like the suggestion of either setting the 1 carat in your three stone ring (or using the two side diamonds in a new three stone setting) or moving the three stone to your right hand.

JaiJai, I''m not sure your idea would work. A 3-stone ring with three of the same size stones MIGHT look okay, but I suspect that having a larger center stone competing in the same space as a solitaire diamond ring could in fact look strange as the center stones would butt up against each other, yet the bands of both rings wouldn''t sit flush. Ultimately the two center diamonds could cause each other damage from rubbing.

Another suggestion is to start afresh and use the two .25 carat side stones as stud earrings, the centre .50 stone as a pendant and get a completely new solitaire ring. At least then you could wear everything and enjoy it.

I second all those who said it wouldn''t look right. I like some of the suggestions on alternate solutions.

If it''s any help, here is a goofy picture, not quite what you''re describing, but it gives some idea of what it''s like to have two rings with larger center stones together. The bottom ring is just a cheap fake, and its center stone is still small, but even then it looks kind of weird. Hope it helps.

It looks odd. Here is a pick with a 1.5 solitaire and a 2 cttw 3-stone. It really doesn''t look good at all in person. Why not wear the 3-stone on your right hand and then get a new band to go with the solitaire?

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Most of you had confirmed what i thought. I wouldnt want the stones competing. I think I may still try it on when I go back to decide on a wedding band just to see for myself, but i''ll probably end up sticking with the 3/4c 5 stone band I had initially decided on. I dont think that I want to change anything about the three stone ring, i get pretty attatched to pieces, so if I decide I just have to have a larger stone, i guess I''ll just get a whole new ring ;) Again thanks for your suggestions!!

(i would have posted a pic, but my digital camera is under the weather at the moment!)
