About a month ago I bought my mahenge spinel and I'm looking to change the setting. I would really like to find a vintage or antique setting and I have no idea how to go about this because I know from other threads finding an existing setting to fit a stone is not the easiest:

I found this one but no idea if it would work since the stone is a 1/2 a carat whether it's even worth asking.

The spinel is oval 7.3 x 4.8 and 3.4mm deep. Thanks for any suggestions!

You would have to go by the measurements. There is some leeway, possibly 0.5 mm thereabouts.

Ooh that's pretty!! How are the prongs attached? Maybe they could adjust the existing basket/crown/prongs, or cut out and insert a new basket/crown/prongs to fit your spinel?

Thanks Chrono, it makes me even more nervous that there is so little wiggle room though.

Thanks Ringo! It kind of reminds me of a ring I used to own but was stolen so it really speaks to me. I'll have to ask about the prongs, if they are attached to the ring itself without a basket is it a no go then or might a good jeweler be able to do something in that case too?

See if you can get a pic of the profile, then post it here for opinions :)

Okay will do!

What a fun project! Love that you’re trying to find a unique setting for it.

Oooo I love the look of that ring! Can the seller provide measurements of the stone that is in there now? The other consideration would be how deep the basket is and whether or not it can accommodate your stone.

Thanks Bluegemz, I just love antique rings so figured instead of having something made I would try this first.

Thanks Shiny! I love the filigree on this setting, I am waiting on measurements but I was wondering if it won't fit into the existing spot could a jeweler remove the prongs and put a basket on it that would accommodate the spinel? This is part of the problem is I don't know if the measurements won't work whether it can be made to work or if I should just move on.

IMG_2819.jpg IMG_2820.jpg Okay here we go, hear back from the seller this morning and I have some side pictures. She couldn't find a ruler but says it appears the emerald is 1/8" wide and 1/4" high. That probably is no help but it's all I've got and these pictures. Can I do anything with this?

It looks like that basket could be cut out and replaced with one that would fit. Question is, how much is that setting selling for - with the emerald stone in it? How much would a jeweler charge to cut out and replace the basket and set your stone? Would it also need to be sized to fit you? If so, does the pattern go all the way around? All of these things have a cost. You have to weigh whether it is "worth it" to proceed. Or you could sent those pics to David klass and ask how much to make a replicas for your spinel? It might be cheaper to recreate and would be structurally sound (no seams).

Thanks Ringo, all things considered I'm probably going to my local jeweler to see what they have. I would hate to buy this and then put as much money into it as having something made.
