Need to find ring for my g/f for Christmas...

Hello, I hope I''m posting in the correct forum. My gf recently mentioned to me that she likes emeralds. I saw her looking at a ring she wants online, but the problem is it''s 4500.00, heh. She didn''t ask for it, and doesn''t even know I saw her looking at it. I wish I could buy it for her, but unfortunately right now funds will not allow. We just graduated college and I''d like to get her something nice for Christmas.

I actually have the picture of the ring saved...maybe someone on here could point me in a direction that I could find a smaller stone for a better deal? Would it be cheaper for me to buy the stone and the ring separately? Where do I start reading on these subjects? I attached a pic of the ring in question. Thank you in advance!!

You could do a nice three stone with a Tsavorite Garnet (nice substitute for emerald) in the center.

Here''s a lovely Tsavorite, it''s not the same cut (emerald cut) as the one in the pic above but it''s a stunning cushion. Plus is a 5.8 by 5.8 which means it can fit into a 6 x 6 setting perfectly. So it''s calibrated-- which means a less expensive setting!

Add a 14K setting from Wink and sidestones (depends on proportions, but the proportions of the inspiration ring are very budget friendly. Those are small diamonds). I think you COULD finish this off for under 2K. Possibly significantly less than 2K is possible, depending on the setting and side stones. I''d personally do trap sides or half moons. Brilliant cut.

Urgh, that emerald looks so included that it''s no longer translucent or transparent. Also, remember that many emeralds are naturally included and oiled and are very delicate stones, which means it is NOT meant as an everyday ring. Still, here''s a one that might be in your budget:

Excellent info, thanks! I didn't realise emeralds were so delicate! I may go ahead with a garnet, but I won't be able to spend anywhere near 2k. It would be best if I could keep this around 5-600 dollars.

I may be able to buy her the stone for Christmas and let her pick out the ring in January. From a womans perspective, would it be disappointing to open a box that held an unset gem?
 
Well it depends on the lady.

A lot of PS ladies, including myself, would be tickled pink because then they could set it as they like... and an unset stones just screams "POSSIBILITIES"... but I can imagine some women wouldn''t be as excited about that.

I would try to get a calibrated stone if you are going to give her something unset, it will make finding a setting much easier.

You could present it loose, or in a temporary white gold setting with a picture of the stone photoshopped over the original green stone so she knows you intend on putting it in a similar setting when funds allow.

A few questions...

What does it mean to be calibrated?

I thought it was bad to have a window? Does the stone above not have a window?
 
Calibrated means... standard size. Not a custom size. It means the stone was cut to hit a certain mm size mark that is easy to find a standard setting for.

As for the window... I don''t see any window in the either stone I posted. Where on the stone are you seeing one?

I should read the thread before I reply! LOL!

It may be difficult to get any stone set in time for Christmas because of the backlog. Giving her just the stone would get you out of that one. I know that I am one of those ladies that would love to get the stone first and then be able to pick the setting myself.
 
I guess I have window and table confused? I thought a window was the large flat surface on top that allows you to see inside the stone? It looks like there is a large flat surface on on this one?

I would not do an emerald for every day wear. I managed to take a big chunk out of one of my emerald rings without even knowing that I did it. I now only wear them in social situations, not for every day wear.
 
The large flat facet on the top of the stone is called the table.

If you can look through the table head-on and see all the way through the stone to what is behind it, that''s a window.

Well cut stones will refract light back through the table. In that case you see light/colors instead of whatever is below the stone. The amount of windowing will vary by gem type because they each have a different refractive index (amethyst- low RI, diamond- high RI). Step cuts (like emerald cuts) have bigger facets and are more likely to window. A round brilliant never has a window because the entire pavillion has many small facets.

Clearer? A well cut tsav should have little or no window.

I suspect that is an unflattering picture of Rick''s Tsavorite. He has exacting standards, and I''ll bet that he won''t tolerate a windowed stone.

I was wondering if that was a bad pic. If it is, I''d have to see a good pic to decide.

For now, I much prefer the Wild Fish stone. I like the different hues and slight blue in the stone. However, the second one might be the way to go if it''s more beautiful than the picture shows *and* if you suspect your girlfriend would prefer a more consistently green (if that makes sense) stone.
