I started a thread on a possible purchase—an emerald cut diamond. This thread is not about scrutinizing that stone—I’ll update that thread if I choose to revisit the stone.

This thread is about the process that you go through before you pull the trigger on a second big diamond. So I have always wanted an emerald cut diamond and have even considered replacing my 2.9 round with a big old emerald cut but I soooo love my round that I will never do that. The emerald would have to be a 4 carat plus but hubby, who knows me well, says that I would regret it immediately.
I have always said I don’t want 2 engagement rings bc I do love my round, I don’t want to rotate it. Which makes me wonder why I am obsessing over the possibility of a 2.10 emerald cut. Like. When would I wear it? I would feel too gaudy wearing my 2.9 and a 2.10 rhr. I already own a .91 asscher cut, 1.5 omc, and I seldom wear them bc they feel too gaudy as rhr’s. They sit in the bank vault. I have many times contemplated making them into pendants but that’s another thread, lol. So. If I know that this ring will sit unworn, why am I excited by the possibility? I’m already dreaming up rhr settings that seem more subtle for a 2.10–is there such a thing, lol.
So my question. If you were in MY shoes—assuming this emerald cut is the one—would you buy it? How would you set it? Would you sell your asscher and omc to help fund this purchase? Would you wear it proudly as a rhr?

My engagement ring is a 2 ct G asscher. I just bought a 2.81 N OMC earlier this year to wear as a RHR. I had it sized to fit my right hand index finger and middle finger as well as my left hand middle finger. I actually just got it in the mail yesterday after having it set. I have a lot of bands for my left ring finger (I think you do too!) and I intend to wear a band stack or just a smaller ring on my left ring finger when I wear the OMC on my right hand. I’m actually doing that right now as I wait for my kids’ swim class lol I don’t think it looks gaudy and I’m loving the look. It looks more casual I think when it’s in my right hand. Would you consider doing that or would you want to wear your 2.9 on a daily basis and never leave home without it?

ETA: I think the most subtle setting for an emerald cut would be to set it easy west in a simple thin bezel with perhaps a soft brushed/satin finish. That’s probably how I would set it.

I would wear it proudly as a RHR and would probably sell the 2 rings to fund it if those weren’t being worn and just sitting in the vault.

Omg! Show us pics!
I would never leave home without my 2.9

I* would not buy it...unless I could set it in something besides a ring (maybe like a cuff bracelet?)

I currently have two engagement rings and I don't like swapping them out and I don't like the idea that one is always not being
worn (granted mine are a lot smaller than yours...but fit my lifestyle). That is just the way my mind works. I know we have
several PSers that have multiple erings and like and wear them all but you sound like you may be a little more like me?

So, if it were me, I* would not be buying it.:(sad It makes me sad to say that because I like for people to buy what will make them
happy!

Edit...I agree with @Muluver about low-key setting an emerald (E/W in satin finish). Just pretend its like a big baguette :mrgreen2:.

I can relate bc I have an almost 4 ct oec and a 3 ct fancy yellow. I also kept my original ering (much smaller). However I don’t mind rotating and I don’t feel the need to wear one of them all the time. Right now my 4 carat is the one I wear most regularly and it would be really weird for me to put the fancy yellow or even the original earring on my right hand because it just seems like too much. So if you don’t want to rotate then I don’t know what to tell you! I can definitely see the pull toward that EC though because it looks beautiful.

Does it have to be a ring? Before I read @tyty333 response I was thinking this would make an awesome bangle set east west.

I don’t even think I should touch the rest of your thoughts because as everyone here knows, I really struggle with owning so many rings. Then I go on and buy another one……so clearly unqualified to say anything else ;)

No, I personally would not buy it. Not wrong for everyone but not right for me. I have a five stone anniversary ring for my right hand ring. I always want my ering to be my ering and don’t want to switch it out. I also don’t want my right hand ring to outshine my ering but rather to compliment it.
Just my own thoughts and feelings - not meant to color your decision in any way! Some folks have multiple rings and enjoy having versatile looks. I would also add that just because you can doesn’t always mean you should so I applaud you for thinking hard about the choice!

If letting it go would cause you more sadness than buying it but not wearing it, I’d get it. I also refuse to swap out my E-ring. And I cannot wear bling with my job. But when I see something I fall in love with, and know it would haunt me forever if I let it go, I get it anyways. Life changes! Diamonds can always be reset. But if you find a unicorn and let it go…. You might never find something like that again. :)

I would never leave home without my 2.9

OK I just got home and did a quick photo shoot lol. Hopefully these will be good enough perspective shots. Excuse the gross nails… I haven’t had a manicure in months lol

These are examples of how I intend to wear the OMC as a RHR…

To try to get a vague idea of how your 2.9 with the emerald cut as a RHR will looks like, I put the 2.81 OMC on my left ring finger (too loose) and my 2 asscher on my my right ring finger (too tight for any other finger on my right hand). I don’t think it looks gaudy at all but maybe that’s just me lol

You have to do what’s comfortable for you!

@nala I am loathe to have jewelry sit rarely worn, and we just don’t go out enough to justify a second ring.
Given the fact that you wouldn’t leave home without your main ering, I suspect this will need to be a rhr. I personally couldn’t pull it off, but have a strong suspicion that you could! If you want lower key, I would set that beauty in a sleek yellow gold bezel, for your right hand.

@nala forgot to say that for me, who loves a great deal, it would also depend on the price. Like if you’re getting a great deal then it would be all the more tempting for that reason! And I know you’re good at scoring deals ;)

Honestly, as much as it pains me to say, I wouldn’t buy it. I get the same kind of excitement about buying something and it’s an obsession for a while and all I can think about.
But I know that for me, I wear my wedding set on my LH and I just don’t deviate from that in practice (even if I love the idea of just doing a stack of bands).
I do occasionally rotate my RH rings and I like to have blingier options for going out but I’m right-handed so like to have things low-profile on that hand. (By the way, this is making me realise my long term plan of upgrading my ering and using its stone in a RH target ring is very unlikely! Erk. That’s not a realisation I wanted to have!).
Digression aside, would it annoy you to have a major piece sitting unworn?
If you wanted to fully test the idea of it as a RH, start wearing the ones you have and see if they are truly too much or if it’s just because you’re not used to them?
Setting-wide, I think EC look gorgeous in tight sleek bezels, set NS. Or nice wide tab prongs to emphasise their shape, if you’re looking for low-key. I’ve yet to see a big EC set EW that I’ve thought oh nice!

Given what you’ve said, no I wouldn’t buy it, unless I was going to get rid of something else. I wear Marilyn on my r/h (2.12 tcw haloed marquise) and Bella (and her new friend) on my left hand. I don’t have any other diamond e/r type rings and I honestly couldn’t see myself rotating either of my current rings if I had another.

I don’t go anywhere either but it doesn’t stop me wearing them down to the supermarket for the weekly shop

I don’t care about being thought of as gaudy

Ty for your input I hear you! I tried east west today and it’s not for me. I want the elongated look for sure. I don’t want another cuff bracelet bc I already wear my marquise bangle non stop and I don’t like the idea of stacking.

Thank you for your pics!! I have to admit that at the end of the day, it’s all in our heads. I doubt anyone is scrutinizing my hands for rings! I love you pull it off!

ETA: I went to my vault today and picked up my bigger rhr’s and all of a sudden—I feel like I can totally wear them! Who knew!

Hahaha. Thank you for being the voice of reason. And yes. Just because I can—does it mean that I must own it?

Go on over and check it out! Tell me if I should pass or if it’s a unicorn!

You know, today I picked up my asscher and my omc and suddenly—they seem small enough to wear on my rhr!

Omg! That’s great to hear! Especially bc we all know what a big girl Bella is! I don’t know if I’ve met Marilyn but I’m off to stalk for pics! Or, you could post some here, pretty please.

Well, as someone else said - if it is a great deal or if you would be sad to lose out on it - that could be your answer. I just would rather spend my money on something I know for sure I will wear. If it were to be left sitting in a drawer, I would feel it was a waste of money. However, that is just me - everyone doesn’t feel the same way.

id buy it
and keep the asscher
can you really have too many diamond rings ? ( i can say that because i dont have an ER :boohoo: )
you just have to figur out when you will wear it and then actually do that

who says its too gaudy ?
you have two hands and ten fingers for a reason !

I think we are similar in that we both love our round e-rings, and wouldn't dream of going out of the house without them, but that we both are also are intrigued by/dream about an EC. In the past, I would have said "no" don't buy the EC because it would be too much as a RHR. However...today I tried on a vintage Harry Winston EC, similar in size to the stone you are looking at, and it knocked my socks off how amazing it looked as a RHR. Who knew?

Because ECs (in my opinion) are an understated cut, if you put the new stone in a visually simple setting (like a solitaire, or with just baguette sides) I actually don't think it would be too much as a RHR. Before seeing something similar on myself today in Houston, I would have said its too much. But now I honestly think it would work and look good.

If it were me though, I'd sell at least one of the two unworn diamonds you have in your bank vault. I think sparkles are meant to be worn, so if they aren't in the active rotation, then best to trade them in for something that would get more use (or at least make them into a new jewelry piece.)

Ditto @RunningwithScissors Emerald cuts are kind of the quintessential RHR so it might be different than, say, buying a second round diamond ring. Also agree that you should sell or reset the ones you do not wear.

On the third hand I agree with the people who say if you think you might not wear it, consider passing on this one. I am the same as @YadaYadaYada in that I have too many rings. Am now working on “declutteresets” and they are not cheap.

(But am also saving up for a new diamond to build a three-stone… thats +1 ring but-2 solitaires so still decluttering, right?)

Very true! Emerald is not round!!

I always intended to have just one e-ring. You know what they say about good intentions, there’s a whole road paved with them. I now have five main rings I switch out as an e-ring. So I would WANT to buy it if I were you, but then I’d have to have a long talk with myself about want vs need. In the end, I would hope in my case, logic would prevail.

I love MRBs and ECs equally, and truly could not pick one shape over the other, so I have both. I also added a Distinctive Gem Emerald cut earlier this year. I love and wear all of them, but my DGEC seems to be my current favorite. IMHO, if you love different shapes and will wear them, I would go for it.
