Well, I''ve gone and done it: purchased this stone from Ed at Wildfishgems for an engagement ring.

Now one more set of difficulties: what kind of ring setting/mounting to choose.

Ed and I have been e-mailing, and my first inclination was to go with a simple 18K white gold Tiffany style setting.

However, there are a few other options I''m thinking of, and wanted to know what you think. My plan is to have Ed set the stone, unless any feels there are better options.

This setting is "cathedral" and similar in some sense to the Tiffany, but a little more complex:

And, I must admit, I''ve become a little enamored with the tension setting, but an a little hesitant due potential to pricing issues, resizing issues, and frankly, how an oval sapphire would look in a tension setting.

I like this one that Ed himself has made (except for the bridge underneath):

and I''m also intrigued by this one and this one:

Though I am completely terrified the stone will pop right out as I look at it.

Let me know what you think...I am hoping to give Ed some direction by the weekend.

Thanks,

Congratulations, that''s a beautiful stone. As for the setting, do you have an idea of what type of setting she likes? The tension settings, while interesting, are quite modern and unique. Unless you know for sure she would like it, I would go with the simpler cathedral or tiffany setting. Another style that I like for solitaires, because it adds a little structural interest, are the X-prong settings (also called trellis settings). I''ve attached a pic of one, and here''s a link to another picture from Good Old Gold: http://com.pricescope.com/photos/rhino/picture1736.aspx.

Also, have you considered presenting the stone in the simplest setting possible, and letting her choose whether to keep that setting or find another one that she likes? People have widely varying opinions about this, and I''m not trying to step in anything by suggesting it

. Just thought I''d mention it as a possibility.

I really do not like those very modern settings for an e-ring, personally. I really like sapphires best with some kind of diamond accents. It really makes the sapphire stand out. What would be gorgeous would be setting it east-west with a split shank setting. You could probably have one made without diamonds if you didn''t want them. Here''s an east-west setting:

And here is one where you could put the stone north-south (just picture and oval instead!)

While tension settings can look awesome, I agree with the others. I'd make sure you know your girlfriend likes them before choosing one. They aren't for everyone.

I know it's just a bit out of budget, but what about this setting? Delicate and sparkly is usually a safe bet:

Hi Shealtiel, I was just wondering if you''d decided on a setting yet. Can''t wait to see what you do with that pretty blue-green!

Diamondseeker, who does the first setting you posted??

They are all pretty but I like the first setting the best.

I looooooove the by-pass settings you posted, but I definitely agree with the others that those are a very unique style that not everyone will like. If you KNOW that is her style, go for it, otherwise, you might want to choose something a little more classic. I also really, really like the idea of proposing with that (OH MY GOSH ABSOLUTELY STUNNING WOW GORGEOUS-) rock in a temp setting and letting her choose if you aren''t 100% sure which style she''d prefer. Also, make sure to think about what a wedding band will look like with the setting you choose - I''ve seen some beautiful custom by-pass wedding sets (my trainer had a stunning one that was like a puzzle ring, a yg w-band ring fit underneath the wg e-ring), but if I had a by-pass setting alone, I''d think it would a very difficult if not frustrating task to find a fitting wedding band. Even the split-shank style can be difficult to pair with a wedding band (it only took 6 months to decide on mine - rrrg!). If you''d really like to make it a surprise, I suggest going with a simple setting - the one that Selkie posted is very pretty! Best of luck!!

I''m not DS but i believe it''s a Ricard Landi (she also titled the attachement rlandi so my guess is it''s probably is

Ed is a great choice for a fine stone.
I won't comment on setting styles as that is well covered already but I wondered about the simplicity of white gold. Much of it contains nickel and zinc and people can have an allergic reaction over time also much of it is plated which many people would rather not have. Platinum is the true white metal they were imitating by making yellow gold appear to be white but it is the most pricey option. Now there is a Palladium mixture also, better than nickel alloys and priced accordingly. Besides sterling silver, I only work with yellow gold, 18k, containing only gold, copper and silver and do not usually accept white gold, especially containing nickel, to contaminate my bench. Best regards, Lee
