After reading so many stories about girls buying one dress only to discover later that they''ve changed their mind and that they want an entirely different dress, I''m left a bit nervous about ordering my own wedding gown.

As a little background...My wedding is scheduled for the late afternoon of 10/11/08 in upstate NY at a mansion overlooking one of the Finger Lakes and the surrounding hills so I''d be best served with something a bit elegant and romantic while still "me". So far I''ve tried on about 40 different dresses and I''ve not had any gut feeling about any of them until I tried on this particular dress at David''s. I honestly had no intentions of buying anything from David''s and I even had a hard time finding just 4 dresses that I was even interested in trying on. The first two were OK, but once I had slipped into this third dress and looked down at myself, I had this little rush of excitement and I was certainly feeling optimistic. After trying on so many dresses, it was a relief to actually get that fluttery feeling that I thought would never come. When I emerged from the dressing room and faced the mirrors and my mom and sister we all definitely had an instant reaction and it was the sort of reaction I was really hoping for.

Since that time I''ve been second guessing my gut feeling though. I''ve been worried that pick up skirts will look quickly dated, or that I''ll join so many other girls that find another dress later on that they love more. Part of me is probably also a bit nervous because the last time I found a dress that I loved at David''s I almost bought it but just a few weeks later it became obvious that the relationship I was in was really not the right one for me, so I''ve already got a bit of a stigma against that place.

So, all of that being said, does this dress look OK on me, or am I being blinded by the rich taffeta and the shiny beads?

My little helper made me take a stroll in the dress so mom got in an action shot ;)

Last but not least, a close up of the shiny beading that got my attention :)

The top is BEAUTIFUL on you and I can see why you love it. But as someone who has classic/retro style...I think this look will be VERY dated in the not so distant future...and more in the way of the lacey/puffy sleeves from the 80''s than in a "classic" dated way.

I personally would pass, but look for something with a more classic skirt with a similarly styled top. I think if you **KNEW** this was the one you wouldn''t be posting about it asking for advice here...but that is JMO.

Honestly I''ve really kind of loved the look of the pickup skirt since I first saw it hehe so I''m definitely biased in that direction ;) I did try on a dress that had a very similiar middle and top with a straight skirt and it felt too plain for my tastes. As much as I know the pick up skirt is a bit of a risk, they certainly seem to do it for me :P My mom was very against the pick up skirts when she first saw them but she''s come around throughout the course of our shopping so I''m not sure how impartial either of our opinions are. I certainly appreciate your input and perspective :D

SO funny, because this is precisely what I thought when I first looked at the picture, too.

That dress is EXTREMELY flattering from your shoulders to your waist......but then the skirt gets so busy, it seems to distract. Totally and completely agree with NF here....if you could get the same style top with a more simple and flowing skirt, I think that would be a winner.

It still has a pick-up skirt, which I also like, but has a little less poof. I''m thinking less poof will look less dated later on.

My OPINION: The cap sleeves on you aren''t my favorite, not sure why exactly. I think you''d look great in a strapless with a straight top like in the pic. You look lovely in a full skirt. But my opinion doesn''t count...only yours does. If any part of it makes you 2nd guess, then it might not be "the dress".

Hmmmm. I like the top & I like the lace cap sleeve ... just think they need to be moved out toward your shoulders a bit. The way they're fitting right now kinda pinches in your bust area visually & you want to emphasize your broad shoulders & bustline (especially the bust!

).

The pick-ups? If you love 'em ... go for it. It's your day. Though - October is almost another YEAR away and I do think pickups will be a thing of the past by them. Yeesh. Hard to say.

ETA: if you have them move where the sleeves attach to the bodice on both sides of the front of the dress -- you won't have "armpit cleavage" either!

-- I think the whole thing will look more elegant and more expensive with just that wee stylistic change.

Yes, that''s what seemed off to me with the sleeves. I couldn''t quite put it in words. Good description deco!

Totally agree with these girls! I think that the top is stunning but I''m not overly gone on the bottom.

Another vote for the magic combo of "great top!" and "pick ups will look dated by next October"

Still, do you really care if they look dated?

Here''s an idea. Since you have a whole year, why not ask the David''s folks if that dress is due to be discontinued anytime soon. Then you can take your time, try on other dresses, and in 4 months or so, order the David''s dress if it''s still your favourite.

For those of you that noticed that the fit was a bit off...good eye :) I just barely squeezed into this particular gown but I was thrilled to actually get into something that matches my "street size" as opposed to something that is two-three sizes bigger than the norm. I definitely think the combo of toning up/losing some fat and some alterations would fix any of the spill over you''re seeing :) I''m certainly not at my ideal weight right now so I''m trying to remind myself that if I can look good in a dress now, I have the potential to look really great when I get my flabby butt in shape.

And I agree, waiting would generally be a good option but there are a few issues...

1) My family/maid of honor/bridesmaids are all in NY and I''m in TX. There''s no way in heck I''d want to go dress shopping without them. The last couple of trips I''ve made home for a visit I''ve been sure to drag them along dress shopping because I know I should really have something picked out by April ''08 at the latest. I could possibly squeeze in one more dress shopping visit before then but that would certainly put the pressure on for that trip and I''d end up at the same stores I''ve already visited as I haven''t found a ton of places with a great Plus Sized collection.

2) Apparently this dress is from the Spring 2007 lineup and my sales associate was sure to put some fear in me by mentioning that a new collection is coming out in the next 3 weeks and wouldn''t it be a shame if this dress was discontinued? Not sure if that was a sales tactic or the truth, but the potential of that happening definitely worries me.

3) This dress is on sale until tomorrow so I have until the end of the day today to order it if I want to save a good chunk of money. There''s the potential that I could find a Maggie or a DaVinci or even an Alfred Angelo that I like better but I haven''t yet found one that gave me the same initial reaction. Right now this dress is also about half the price of some of the other options in similiar styles and I don''t really think I could afford a more expensive gown unless something drastic happened like a huge pay raise or winning the lottery hehe.

I think I''m hesitating because I''m trying my best to take the emotion out of this purchase by treating it like any other big ticket purchase when we all know that finding THE dress is all about the feeling. I''ve tried on a TON of dresses that looked OK on me, but they never really wowed me. This one did.

And deco, you''ve got a point...if I like the pickups what does it matter if they''ll look dated? Really, pickups aren''t a totally new concept and perhaps I watched too much Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman growing up, but they remind me of that whole Wild West meets Edwardian look so they can''t be all bad. Of the two formal dances I attended in High School, I wore a very basic gown to my senior ball that stills look pretty classic to my eye and I wore a more funky, now more dated dress to my junior prom and I don''t find myself regretting either dress. The prom dress was of that time period, it looked cute on me, and it''s kind of fun to see how dresses have changed since then. It was a very Heidi dress and it was purchased because I liked the fabric, the color, and the fit, not because I hoped it wouldn''t look dated years later. I''d like to hope I''d have the same warm and fuzzy feelings about my wedding dress, even if it''s obvious that I purchased it in 2007 when pick-ups where visible as far as the eye could see ;)

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

Heidi: First off, you look fab in that dress. I love how the neckline and sleeves flatter you so well. The detail is super duper and I LOVE PICKUPS! (my dress has them too!)

As far as your location being romantic and elegant, girl, I think that dress is romantic and elegant as well! Can you picture yourself being married in it and can you see yourself showing your grandkids your wedding pictures in that dress? If so, I think that is it. We can tell you this and that about how you LOOK in the dress, but how do you FEEL in it? I think that is the most important thing. I actually boasted out "I look gorgeous" when I tried on THE dress. Kinda embarrassing...but I knew it was the one after that outburst. Haha.

I almost bought this exact dress! Hey Heidi: This one is beautiful too, have you checked it out? The champagne color was flattering on me but you''d had to see it for yourself.

I had liked that dress when I saw it online but once I started trying things on I noticed that I looked best in the tops that have a side sweep to them as they define my waist a bit better. Also, they didn''t have this one in my size when I was there the other day :P I showed Nate that Oleg as well and he actually really kind of disliked it a lot so for that fact alone I''d have a hard time buying it ;) Beautiful gown though and it got my attention as soon as I saw it hit the website :)
