I wanted to mention a recent issue of Lapidary Journal has a fascinating article on the new American Express 9/11 memorial that now resides in the American Express Lobby in NYC.
It is an eleven sided Quartz crystal, one side representing each of the 11 victims from the American Express WTC offices that were killed. It was cut by Lawrence Stoller, long a cutter and student of Quartz.
Basically, it consists of an 11 sided pool of water, around which the names of those who had died, inscribed, one to each side. Behind each name a five line description of each person supplied by family members would appear etched beneath the surface of the water with the words, September 11, 2001, inscribed in the center. The pool would be mirrored by a matching, 11-sided canopy in the 35-foot ceiling. Both uniting and creating tension between this heaven and earth, an 11 sided crystal suspended by 11 cables hovers two inches above the water the crystal’s image mirrored in the reflecting pool. Drops of water intermittently fall from 11 small holes in the ceiling symbolizing tears for each of those lost, thus the name, Eleven Tears.
The reason I mentioned Mr. Stoller as a student of Quartz, there is a belief that, since Quartz has certain scientific properties, that distinguish it, as well as certain esoteric properties such as the fact, Quartz is ‘alive’. It grows by virtue of very precise chemical processes, and geological conditions into entities with striking geometric shapes that have highly sophisticated geometric structures.
Quartz is extremely dense, yet it can be transparent. It *is* a gem mineral. It contains natural inclusions of ‘bows’ and “veils” that give every quartz crystal a unique and beautiful personality. It also has piezoelectric qualities that has made it the bedrock of many modern technologies. Natural Quartz crystals might be millions of years old, yet share binary qualities with both the computer and the human brain.
