I love these photo journals.
I had no idea India was such a center for diamond buying. Those bags of stones...goodness me.
Interesting photo comparison of the middle class child and the beggers child.

Love it Garry !

As much as I get these the punch line comes at the end:

"Trying to squeeze an extra 1% or 2% more life and fire out of each diamond has never been my goal. I am very happy now; I believe about close to ¼ of the worlds diamonds are now cut to a very acceptable standard. Given we started at around 90% being lousy – we have really come a long way in just 6 years"

Allot less than 1/4 of the diamonds in the database here come under any standard of cut quality at all. So... what gives ?

What''s the magic standard that is alreay making beautiful, anonimous diamonds ready & up for grabs ?

Ana I base this on my anecdotal experiance as i look at diamonds at trade fairs, in buying offices, what is shown to me in my own business and secret shopping in retail stores.

I think the first GIA cut study ''brilliance'' - fall 1998 - is on-line somewhere - you will find a mention that less than 3% of diamonds were close to the then standard for ideal proportions out of some 67,000 stones that GIa graded that year.

But Ana it would be very instructive if you could do some sort of on-line pricescope analysis (you are very good at that stuff - constantly amazes me how you people do that?)

What did you think of the ags0 princess cuts?
They look hot.

I will soon stock more than a token number of fancy and princess cuts in my own store Storm.

Very informative article. It was a great read. Thanks. With this level of manufacturing, I would assume that they manage yields very well from rough. Are the yields still accpectable with the improved cutting or do they give something up. That is, is there enough economic pressure from mass retailers for higher yielding commercial cut goods over well cut ones?

I would also infer from this that an additional benefit will be better cut accent stones and small melee?

Naturally better technology and processes results in better possabilities for nice makes.

But labs and trade teaching have done a huge disservice by creating demand for diamonds that are not as well cut as they might be.

For instance many retailers and trade buyers believe the size of the reflection of the table (the patch that is about 1/3rd to 1/4 the width of the table) should never be bigger than 1/3rd the table width. But this is wrong for a diamond that is cut from a sawn top of an octahedron. It wants to be made to 61% table with a shallow crown and slightly deep pavilion - it would get AGS 0 on their new system - and have a 5% better yeild. But if you showed this diamond to most buyers they would reject it for having too large a table reflection - or show them the Sarin #'s and they would reject all 3 proportion factors.

Many of the manufacturers in Surat are well on top of the science of cutting 9they all use DiamCalc and Ideal-scopes etc) but they still get their corrupted sales feedback and demand from buyers.

The customer is always right?
