I have been dreaming of owning a cushion/oval cut halo and I spent several weeks designing this ring. It is about a 2.6 cushion center and I wanted the ring to be more elongated so I worked with the designer to narrow the sides of the halo and thicken the top/bottom. While I love several aspects of the ring, it didn't turn out 100% as discussed and they are willing to work with me. I just recently joined this forum and this is my first post. I love the candor, communication and collaboration that I have seen in this forum so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
1. Do you think the halo is too thick on the top/bottom or all over?
2. Do you think the halo should be angled down more?
3. Do you think the halo border closest to the diamond is too straight and should be a little more curved?
4. Do you think the halo is too much of a 90 degree angle and it should be more rounded?
5. Do you think the center stone should sit more flush to the halo?
6. Do you think the openness of the diamond below may lead to damage? At this point nothing is protecting the center stone on the sides...
7. Do you think from the side angle, the ring looks too much like a flat/horizontal plate and there should be another row of small diamonds vertically set?

Thank you!

First congratulations on a beautiful ring. With that said, your questions are very specific, and focus on details that not every halo-wearer would notice. However, for good or for bad, you have found PS, and we notice all this $hit. So, maybe you are asking these questions because you have seen Victor Canera's halos, which are a huge favorite here because he has pretty much perfected a certain style of halo (many styles I think). I am going to link this thread which shows many of his halos.

And a lot of people who have the exact same concerns as you have Victor make their halos because he does address all those concerns, such as the tilt of the halo, the thickness of the metal, the height at which the diamond is set, etc. So based on how perfect Victor's halos look, in my opinion, here are the answers. Forgive me for writing in caps. Just makes it easier to read.

1. Do you think the halo is too thick on the top/bottom or all over? IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW THICK THE METAL IS, YES, IT'S TOO THICK ALL OVER.
2. Do you think the halo should be angled down more? YES.
3. Do you think the halo border closest to the diamond is too straight and should be a little more curved? DO YOU MEAN THE BEZEL EDGE? NO, IF THE EDGE OF THE DIAMOND IS STRAIGHT, THE BEZEL EDGE SHOULD HUG AND BE STRAIGHT TOO.
4. Do you think the halo is too much of a 90 degree angle and it should be more rounded? YES.
5. Do you think the center stone should sit more flush to the halo? THE PIC SHOWING THE SIDE VIEW IS FUZZY SO I CAN'T TELL HOW LOW THE STONE IS SET. I PREFER IT TO SIT RIGHT ABOVE THE GIRDLE.
6. Do you think the openness of the diamond below may lead to damage? At this point nothing is protecting the center stone on the sides... I DON'T THINK THERE IS TOO MUCH DAMAGE YOU CAN DO FROM UNDERNEATH SINCE YOUR FINGER WILL DO MOST OF THE PROTECTING.
7. Do you think from the side angle, the ring looks too much like a flat/horizontal plate and there should be another row of small diamonds vertically set? YES, IT LOOKS TO HORIZONTAL, BUT WITH THE RIGHT TILT, IT WON'T LOOK LIKE IT NEEDS ANOTHER ROW OF DIAMONDS. IF YOU WANT ANOTHER ROW, GO FOR IT.

Question: do you want your diamond to sit that high off of your finger? I would think that halo could be lowered closer to your hand, and still be elevated enough to give you the look you are seeking.
I agree with @LLJsmom, on all of the above. This is a good start, but there is quite a bit of tweaking to be done...

What was the inspiration photos you shared with your jeweler?
IMO - that will help in answering your questions in context.

#6 question - what could get in there to knock and damage the stone?

One of the things I noticed (that you did not mention) is how high the bezel is setting from the shank/how long the cathedral arms are.
But it all goes back to the inspiration ring, what look you are going for.

Your stone is beautiful, but I think you are noticing some of the things about the setting that I would notice as well. Definitely look through threads and determine the style you like. I like a halo to have more of an angle down and a more curved, less metal look but it's what you prefer that matters! It's a beautiful ring either way, and congratulations!

If you are going to change the halo I suggest you think about changing the shank too. If you reduce the metal on the halo the shank is going to look heavier and out of proportion. I agree with @Rfisher to look at your inspiration pics to see what is right/wrong with the completed ring.

Here are the pics of the photos that I gave the jeweler. I told them that I wanted an elongated look instead of square but the 3rd picture is a pic of the halo that was in the store that we used what we used as a baseline to create the design. Thank you SO much for all your help, feedback, and comments!!!

IMHO, I see a lot of metal rather than diamond melee halo. I looks very rectanglish rather than cushionish. ( I know not words). Your channel set side stones look much bigger than the halo stones but seem lost under that big halo. With all that white metal, your halo looks brighter and whiter than your center stone. Congrats on the engagment. I know you will get your concerns fixed.

I wish the stone could be changed for a true lengthy cushion ...

Is there still any chance ?

Hi valeria101 - I asked the question and the jeweler told me that if I change it to a longer elongated cushion then it is out of proportion and it isn't classified as "excellent" or "very good" cut anymore. It affects the brilliance... is this the case?

I am now thinking that perhaps I should have gone with an oval :(

No.

There are long cushions around as fine as anything

I hope I am not missing anyone who responded and contributed! Thank you SO much for all your wonderful advice and feedback! My only remaining question is when you say that there is too much metal, are you referring to
1. The diamonds in the halo should be bigger?
2. The overall width of the halo (metal + diamonds) should be thinner?
3. The width of the metal in the halo (and on the shank, surrounding the diamonds) should be cut thinner?

Thank you SO much!

From what you said and your inspiration pics it sounds like you like the look of rounded corners on a cushion or oval. Your inspiration pic #3 looks like a round in a squarish halo. What shape is your main stone? Is it a rectangle? Are you really happy with the shape? I think if you start with a diamond shape you love getting the halo right will be much easier.

Thank you Kgzio! The store had the 3rd ring in stock and I like the design, just not the squarish look for my hand. So I asked them to elongate it to look like the 1st and 2nd picture, and also widen the shank so it is tapered. there are several things that I like about this ring although I am now thinking that the halo looks too wide or it might have been better to get an oval.

I appreciate all the comments on this forum because it validates what I have been thinking and I didn't think that the metal is part of the "thick" look. I now see what you are all saying and maybe this problem can be solved by thinning the metal, tapering the halo down and rounding the corners of the halo?

I would appreciate any/all advice on the following as I agree with your comments that there is too much metal
1. Should the diamonds in the halo should be bigger?
2. Should the overall width of the halo (metal + diamonds) should be thinner? This is the opposite of what I would do if the answer to Question #1 is yes...
3. Should the width of the metal in the halo (and on the shank, surrounding the diamonds) should be cut thinner?

Thank you so much!!

I think the halo diamonds should be smaller. But that depends on the type of halo you want. Do you want dainty thin halo that complements your center stone or bigger diamonds which goes with a bigger overall look for the ring but doesn’t make you focus on the center stone as much. That is just my opinion on the impact of the size of the halo stones (melee).

Thak you, LLJsmom!! I appreciate you getting back to me and for your input and recommendations!!!

It could be the pics, but the thing that sticks out to me is I see melee prongs on your version but they are less noticeable on the inspiration pic.
Does your jeweler use CADs and 3D printing? This might help you with the proportions and halo curve. CADs can be hard to read bc they contain extra metal that is polished out during fabrication, but there are people here who can help you.
I included a pic of my cushion halo below. For me, sometimes it is easier to see the proportions/detals/etc better with a colored stone because of the contrast.

That is a beautiful ring!! Thank you so much for your helpful information, kgizo!!!I will ask for a CAD and 3D rendering!!
