I am looking for Green or pink stones to have made into ear rings for my wife.. I do not know where / what size or stone to get. I have looked around and seen stones from $20 to $20,000 dollars so any advice is appreciated..

Thanks, John

PS 20k is not going to happen no matter how indebted/happy she would be..

Hi and welcome

I don't know a huge amount about coloured stones, but I know this.... I love pink sapphires and they can be priced very reasonably. If you do a search using the above tool you might see some examples to inspire you. With the green stones have you considered emeralds? There are folk out there far more knowledgeable than me with coloured gems but hopefully this will give you a hint as to where to start. HTH.

This link has a few examples of pink sapphires for you to see.

Hi, Ropes4u...welcome!

Hmmm pink stones: sapphire, tourmaline, spinel are a few....

Green: emerald, tsavorite, tourmaline, peridot....I'm sure I've forgotten something.

If you simply want round stones for studs, you might be better off letting your local jeweler source some for you. Or you could go to a site like www.ajsgems.com and if you don't see something suitable, they could probably find (or cut) something...

Just some thoughts to get you started..

PS: Here are some things I found at www.acstones.com (one of my favorite browsing sites). I love the amethyst apples, but I guess they're more purple than pink...

Have fun!

Chrome diopside could make pretty green earrings too.

Here is something to think about. For a reasonable amount of money, you could get a very top green tourmaline. The same amount would get you a very cheap lower grade sapphire or tsavorite garnet.
Tourmalines will come in all different color ranges in green.
Lesser price would be the olive green - middle range the blue green - and higher price would be chrome green.
Blue green stones, in the 1 ct range, a good size for earings should cost you around $125 - $175 each for well cut stones.
Similar sized tsavorite garnets would be $400-$900 each.
Emeralds could be $50 -$5000 each. You really need to know what your doing to buy emeralds.
I would think your best bet would be the tourmalines. I thought is, to buy a higher end tourmaline, rather than a low end emerald.

One more vote for this - for what it matters.

Not to mention it is more likely to find a beautifully cut pair of tourmaline, since few would 'waste' material orders of magnitude more expensive by mass just to make the finished gems perfectly cut and matched. It happens, of course - but allot less often for fine tsavorite or emerald than for tourmaline.

My 2c.

And one more thing about tourmaline - if you wanted larger stones, this really does make a difference. Perhaps in the 1 ct range all those prices mentioned for green stones sound acceptable, but make it 3 cts/ear, and tourmaline is still widely available in any quality for not much, while green garnet becomes a rarity and emerald prices start to poke at the 20k roof.

If small and fine is the goal: I would still count very fine 'chrome green' tourmaline among the options. The stones are sensibly more expensive than most other green tourmaline, but surely stand out.

Hope some of this helps

Hi Ropes4U!

I''m stuck on emeralds... they are MY definition of green.
When you are shopping for emeralds try to find the biggest and clearest one you can afford. Although emeralds are never completely clear, if you can see "through" the stone to the other side with the naked eye, it''s a good bet it''s good. Columbian emeralds are supposedly the best, but what you like is more important than anything else.
Tsavorite would be my second choice for green and it''s a much clearer stone.
Don''t overlook the rare green sapphires and the ever rarer green diamonds if you want to go to the high-end.

Thank You everyone for your help. I will look around at the green and pinks you suggested and see what I can find..
