Hi there! I hope this post is ok in here. My name is Kathryn, I've been lurking off and on for awhile, but I wanted to register and introduce myself. I've always loved jewelry but have started collecting much, much more over the past year. I've moved completely away from commercial jewelry, and while I used to mostly like emeralds and diamonds, I've done a 180 and have become fascinated with garnets and tourmaline. I had no clue that they both came in a rainbow of colors until last summer. I've spent the last year educating myself online about what makes for a great CS; I had no idea of how the terms "window", "bowtie", "tone", "saturation", etc etc applied to CS until this last year :) So, I'd consider myself a collector, but on a pretty small scale compared to most.

My very favorite gems currently are garnets, namely demantoid, mint, and color change. I also love the blue and green shades of tourmaline and the pink as well - but I tend towards blues and greens.

Just for fun, I took a few pics of some of my collection :) I guess I should add that I like minimal sized gems (which is great for my budget), and I like extremely simple settings along with sort of a laid back, more casual look. I think that's sort of what kept me from posting sooner - I feel like such a noob when I see the huge gorgeous gems with melee settings, etc - mine are all so very simple, but that's just what I like. I don't know if I'll ever graduate to liking larger, more complex settings and gems - I guess we'll just have to see. I tried out a large 10 mm simple gemstone ring and it was way too big for me, I ended up selling it about 2 months after I bought it, lol.

So, I'll post a few pics. I apologize in advance for the quality of them, I'm NOT a good photographer :(

My favorite garnet rings, a demantoid pair, a mint, and a pair of cc blue/green/purple garnet

Close up of my mint ring, it's my very favorite ering right now.

Shades of tourmaline! (All untreated/unheated. The big one is 19 carats, I just got it this week! It's actually very very clean overall, it's hard to tell the quality from this pic, but it just has one real issue, a line in the middle - which is right where the flash is, oops.) The smaller blue one in the bracelet is actually an ice blue color IRL, it looks very dark in this pic. I have some other tourmaline rings but that's it for pendants/bracelets.

Last pic for now. Just a crazy one with all of my CS rings, plus most of my metal only rings. I love the mixed metal look.

Sorry, I just checked my post and saw how crazy and all-over-the-place these pics are :( I'll try to do better in the future. I took these on my phone and transferred to the computer; they're all weird sizes.

Again, I hope this post is in the right place. I look forward to getting to know some of you and having a place to chat about my favorite gems!

Welcome! Girl you really like bezel~
Lovely photos!

Re: New here, saying hi w/pics of my fav CS (garnet and tour

Lol!! I know, I'm a bit of a one trick pony. I find something I like, and then recreate it a million times.

The funny thing is up until I started collecting last year, I had never owned a single bezel set ring, and only one bezel set diamond pendant. I ended up selling all of my old stuff (mostly halo style) and switching. I do have several variations on the bezel though, in my defense ;)

Thanks for the kind words :)

Thank you for finally "coming out" and sharing your collection. You've amassed quite a few pieces and my favourite is the first set of rings posted. Is the mint garnet concave cut?

Re: New here, saying hi w/pics of my fav CS (garnet and tour

I am the exact same way -- if I had unlimited funds, I'd have 50 versions of the exact same ring!

Thank you, those are my favorite rings as well :) The mint is Portuguese cut, it's a bit hard to photograph from dead on/center. I saw the gem unset and HAD to have it, I thought it was so beautiful. I also have a few pairs of demantoid and blue cc garnet earrings - they're very simple, small studs in green gold button settings; they're so cute!

Ha! Glad I'm not the only one that does this!!

Thanks for coming out and sharing your lovely collection! I'm a fan of blues/greens, too, and I really like your elongated pendants!

Welcome! I'm so glad you've joined. When you're ready, please share your experiences making your rings. They look great!

Re: New here, saying hi w/pics of my fav CS (garnet and tour

Welcome! I love bezels so this is right up my alley. That first set of rings is especially stunning. Beautiful!!

Thank you for sharing your bling! Glad you stepped out of the shade. I love the mint ring too -- the cut looks very good & Portuguese is one of my faves. I also really like the demantoid & garnet rings in your first pic -- unique & fun.

Hope to see you more!

Does your demantoid garnet have a long lost sister?

Look at this! They look so much alike lol

Welcome Kath! Judging from your many bezel rings, it sounds like you have a good bit of experience and can teach us a thing to two!

I too very much liked your first photo. Is it correct to assume you are wearing three rings in that photo? Did you have them made to be worn together? I love the pattern and how they fit hand in glove. Would love to hear more.

And thank you to everyone for all of the nice comments and the warm welcome :)

Thanks! Yes, they are three separate rings. I actually had each one made at a different time, but the same jeweler did all of them. I don't wear them together normally, I just placed them that way for the pic - I was grouping garnets together. Normally I wear the larger mint ring with a gold band, and I wear the two open garnet rings next to each other on another finger. I really like the open rings; they're comfortable and casual looking, but showcase some pretty, more unusual gems.

The jeweler I use for almost all of my garnet and tourmaline buying is Yvonne Raley, she has an etsy store called Cecile Raley Designs. I'm not trying to sell anything here so I hope it's ok to write that; if not just let me know and I'll take it down. But those rings seem to be the most liked so I thought I'd let everyone know who did them, in case anyone was interested in aquiring something similar :). She's based out of NY, and I love dealing with her, I think she's very trustworthy and reliable.

Thanks,, I guess the size is quite similar to yours too? My little one measures 5.2*5.2 if memory serves.

Lovely rings! I especially love the ones in the first shot. Welcome to PS!

Re: New here, saying hi w/pics of my fav CS (garnet and tour

I can see the stones much better on my laptop now. Geez, my iPhone made the garnet look like it is concave cut but seeing it on my laptop, it is obviously a portuguese cut stone.

Well, the larger gem is actually the merelani mint, it's a 6 mm round, so yes, very close in size! The demantoids that I have are tiny guys, they are just 3.75 mm. They're the ones in the top open ring. I'd love to get a nice but affordable demantoid in the 5-6 mm range, but the ones I keep seeing are either too nice (meaning expensive) or not nice enough, lol

I'm kind of surprised you could tell at all with my pics :) I have only owned two Portuguese cuts but I find them to be extra hard to photograph. I really like the cut. I haven't owned any concave cuts but I'd love to get one. I actually just picked up a small pair of yellow sapphires for another open ring, and I thought they looked like they might be concave, but the seller said brilliant - she said she thinks they just have "very intense color and fire".

They're small, only 3.5 mm, and I actually don't even normally like yellow gems. I was very attracted to these bc of their beauty, and I want to do a slightly upgraded open ring (all 14k yellow gold with a 2 mm by 1 mm band in between the bezels, the open rings I have now are 14k gold bezels with a silver 1.5 mm round wire/band). Anyway I think these yellows are a good choice for this little project - they should look quite bright and pretty in the yellow gold, I'm curious to see how they turn out. I'll try to post a pic of them.

Re: New here, saying hi w/pics of my fav CS (garnet and tour

Ok, yellow sapphires. Completely untreated, I am a bit of a freak about that. I will buy the occasional treated gem but prefer not.

Your sapphires look very well cut.

As to sharing the vendor name, that is what we do, so you just saved us the trouble of asking! Its nice to have more jewelry making sources.
