New necklace but does it look off?

I’ve been super excited about this necklace. I planned to wear it along with my diamond bezel necklace like in my picture. I ordered from a seller off of Etsy and it was very clear in the listing that it is solid 14 karat gold not filled or plated. I also messaged the seller to confirm that it is all solid 14 karat gold. I noticed right away that the color of the necklace looked very off. It’s noticeably darker and more orange toned than all of my other 14k pieces. I noticed markings on the clasp So I louped it to get a good look and it is clearly marked 585. What do you guys think? Should I continue to doubt it or can there be that much variation in 14k alloys.

The only thing I can think of is the alloy mix has higher copper.

*Also, is that ring an EmmaKrafft band? I love it.

I recommend taking it to a place to get tested so that you can be 100% sure. I’ve done that before and usually a pawnshop they will test it for free. I’m also curious about the band! Very pretty. I agree that it does have that plated look but you just can’t really know unless it’s tested.

That’s where my mind was to. It’s soooo off to me. I messaged the seller so I’m curious to hear her response. It is EmmaKrafft! I meant to share it on here last week but totally got distracted.

Thank you! Looks like that’s what I’m going to have to do. Regardless the color really bugs me. The bee band is from emmakrafft

Next to a 14k necklace. The chain is what is particularly off.

Is it returnable?

I think so. It says they have a “I’m loving it guarantee.” It also says they gladly except returns but in another area it says custom orders are non returnable but their entire shop is name necklaces. Totally confusing. Anyways the more I look at it the more I realize that something is totally off. The chain doesn’t match the names and almost looks more rose gold. All of the reviews Look like normal 14 karat gold. There were lots of reviewers pairing the necklaces with other necklaces as well and they looked fine. It was a cool thought and I like the overall idea of it and I’m hoping that I can get a suitable replacement most likely with a different company though.

I bought a beautiful bracelet for my sister many years ago that was 9ct yellow gold. When it arrived, it was clearly WAY more yellow & buttery than the other 9ct pieces & was on a par with my grandmothers 22ct gold wedding ring. I contacted the seller & he confirmed that they had put a 22ct plate over the top to make it look more rich & expensive. It was annoying, but several years on the plate has worn away & it sits a little better with her other 9ct bracelets.

Could it be that they have also added a gold wash to your necklace? Which is lovely, by the way!

Interesting. That definitely might be the case. I’m waiting to hear back from the seller so I’m eager to see what she says. I’m definitely not liking how the chain clashes with the names. Loving the overall look of the necklace though.

I believe there can be quite a lot of variation in gold alloys depending on composition - see this thread, for example (18k alloys shown, but you’ll get the idea): https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/gold-colours.169529/#post-3084628

Have you tried cleaning the entire piece to remove potential oxidation from the chain sections? I was wondering if perhaps the pre-made chain could have oxidized more during storage, but the freshly-worked nameplate portions would have relatively less oxidation? Depending on what you hear back from the seller, maybe it is worth a shot?

Any word from the seller?

Yes, she totally avoided answering my questions about the metal color but promptly sent me a return shipping label. It’s on its way back to her. I will definitely be purchasing the same necklace but elsewhere.

Oh wow! Gosh I’m really curious about the metal now. Glad you are able to return it.

I have a feeling that she has her products made overseas and was just as surprised as I was by the tone of the gold. I might have been able to look past it if the nameplates actually matched the chain. She had tons of positive reviews and and in many of them the buyers were wearing the necklace along with other necklaces and there wasn’t any color difference. Mine looks noticeably different than what the reviews looked like. She said she definitely wanted to take a look at it and offered to remake it or refund. I just didn’t feel comfortable enough to have her remake it and I definitely wasn’t impressed by the quality in general so I’m getting a refund and plan to purchase from another company.

dont forget we will need to see the new necklace =)2
