This is a big problem in 3rd world countries - esp. Africa and South America.
In well regulated countries it is not such an issue.

“Traditionally, leaching or separating gold and other precious metals from an ore deposit or e-waste materials requires the use of cyanide – a highly toxic chemical compound that is known to have detrimental effects to the environment and to the human body,”

Another use for Condies crystals

@Garry H (Cut Nut) this is fantastic news. Because it is patented, am I right in understanding that this will only be applicable in industrial large scale mining operations? Or would artisinal miners also be able to aply this method? And will the permanganate solution also replace mercury or do they have different applications?

I spoke with one of the researchers and he thinks it is not that hard because no high temperatures are required.
I hope the big companies Anglo American Riotinto and BHP will come to assistance. RIO needs to do more CSR work after the.mess up last year.
I have introduced them to Resolve and Ian Smilie.
