Quick background: I plan on dropping to one knee for my gf of 6 years in a couple of weeks on my 30th birthday weekend. I've been shopping locally and have narrowed it down to three options which I will be deciding on tomorrow given my gf flies back into town in a few days. I'd like input on value and quality but most especially as it pertains to the rough house solitaire.

This first charmer is a .47 SI1/2 RB the side stones represent an additional .3ct. The sticker on it was 2595 which has been 'reduced' to approx 2100 after tax

Not sure why there was a 25 percent mark down on the sticker but of all jewelers that I have encountered lately this store owner is genuine and has been in business locally for 25 years. Any thoughts? Also, the uploader isn't allowing more than two photos... I'll try posting a response to follow for the other two options. Thank you for your time and input.

Hopefully this works.. Option 2:

I am interested in the ring depicted on the ring finger and although the other is over 500 less, just not as into it. I believe this one is in the .47 range also. SI1 RB. Sticker is originally 3500ish. After tax 'deal' is 2760. Actualpy that may be pre-tax Can't remember the ct for the side stones.

This ring worth the money? Looks like it but its at thevery top end of my price range.

If there is no lab report and the diamond are uncertified you have no idea what you are getting. And any place giving 25% off is going to take you for a ride.

Here's what I recommend.
Tell me where you are located and I can either find an out of state jeweler (no sales tax) or an in state you can go visit.

Just one example:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11520/ 57 points. IDEAL CUT (this is very important). G SI1 1810 for the stone. MUCH bigger than the choices this jeweler is offering you.
http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER8556W44JJ Setting that Good Old Gold carries. PS discount is 20% off list price of $875 Very lovely and modern style ring. The ones you are choosing from are both very dated styles.

2685 out the door.

And GOG is very genuine. They are a REAL jeweler in NY state. With an EXCELLENT reputation. http://www.yelp.com/biz/good-old-gold-massapequa-park

I can do this in many states. Or find you a different vendor.

And I guarantee you this will outshine ANYTHING that jeweler can offer you.

Lastly, but not leastly. Option 3:

This is what I refer to as the rough house solitaire. At 1300 (950) after 'deal' it represents the biggest savings. Something about this ring's stylish flair speaks to me and makes a statement. It's definitely different and represents more of a reflection of me as a gift to her which is probably counter to 'this ring reflects all tge beauty of you'. That's the sentiment. The savings don't hurt any either. :) the idea is to make custon bands that really bring this one to life. Any and all criticism accepted.

It just me or does the cut on this stone actually look pretty good? I'm a bit new to this so I know you guys have a better eye for this sort of thing.20140215_175323.jpg

Hey thanks for the response. I will look into this but time is of the essence. I live in California. Central Coast. If you know of decent deals nearby I'm willing to go and take a look tomorrow before making a decision.

I like in CA.

And time is of the essence is not an excuse to get ripped off.

GOG can have a ring to you in less than a week. I suggest you give them a call about that diamond I posted. And see what settings they have in house under $1000 with "PAVE ON THE SHANK".

They have a nice selection of stuff in house (they are a real jeweler) and can pop that diamond in it in under an a couple hours and have it sent to you before you know what happened.

I'm with Gypsy on this one. Get an ideal cut stone and pretty setting from GOG and have them fedex it to you overnight. It should get to you in under a week.

If you don't go with this option, and insist on buying one of the three you posted, I would go with the first or second one (choose based on what you think your gf will like best). I have a friend who got engaged with a ring similar to the third one you posted, and it's been an absolute NIGHTMARE finding a wedding band to go with it. If you're attracted to the price, remember that having to make a custom wedding band to match will likely cost more and may not be aesthetically pleasing. Also, really consider whether your gf will like something non-traditional like that because that style of ring is definitely not for everyone.

Valuable insight guys. I really appreciate the specific response on the options. I'll check out this GOG and let you know what I have come up with. Any advice on whether or not the prices are even remotely reasonable on these? I don't mind spending a lot more on fancy bands especially if I will have saved a pretty penny on the engagement ring. One important thing to note about the saver: I plan on letting her upgrade to her liking by Christmas even or in a year's time seeing as how the third option represents rough n tumble ol' me. Any experience/feedback on going this unusual way?

Hopefully I'm able to find something within a price range that I'd be comfortable at this moment (I don't use credit cards) which is honestly at most 2 grand. 2500 if it is an absolute steal. Overnighting is an option and one week max is what I have to spare as far as time is concerned.

If you plan to upgrade her soon then don't spend a lot of money on the setting. Get something that will be FULLY upgradeable, these won't be.

Okay would tell them your price range.

Tell them that you want a diamond setting (PAVE Pah-veh) is very hot right now.

And at least 45 points for the center.
And that you have a deadline. And honestly I would stretch to 2500 if you can. You won't get a "STEAL' from a REPUTABLE jeweler. WHY? Cause they don't lie to you or give you sales pitch BS or inflated false sales PS. They will make sure you get exactly the best value for your money and that the quality is great.

And as for whether or not the ones you saw are a deal. They aren't. A deal isn't a deal unless you know what you are getting. You don't know what you are getting. The stones aren't lab graded. They aren't well cut (if they were they would be lab graded). And all you know is they are a fictional 25% off of some RIDICULOUSLY inflated price listed to make the only "super inflated sale price" look good.

You are getting scammed. And I don't care how sincere this guy was.
Ever heard the saying that the devil can quote scripture?

If scam artists were insincere and un-authentic. They then wouldn't be very good at what they do would they?

I'm giving a great jeweler who can work with any budget.

I think its smart that you aren't using credit or financing.

Now be smart and use the resources you are being handed. So that you get something that is WORTH your very hard earned cash. :wavey:

Please listen to what they are telling you:) You will be happier!

I will say that GOG is much better vendor than B2C.

I would use GOG. I would not personally use BC2.

After countless upload attempts here are all three enlarged for your scrutiny.

Wow guys. I didn't realize that I had anymore responses. To clarify all of these options have certifications save the last. But you can guarantee tonight will be a restless one. I will be putting you all's info and posts to good use to the wee hours :read: before making the most permanent decision of my life so far. Thank you!

Those stones are great picks. And the points on 'em are worth the price seeing as how well cut they are. I'm not into fancy bands and being an East Coast girl I don't think the fancy stuff is up her alley. At any rate my inclination is to stay as far away from fads and trends in jewelry as possible. I don't see the appeal in the all talked about halos and pah-ves and such. Classic simple yet makes a statement that bout sums it up. You guys could be pointing me around all week as picky as I am. I do think that last setting would be great if it allowed for a channel set. That's the theme with my original three. Something about the illusion of a floating diamond just seems nice. :)

Channel set is something both vendors would have.

Pave is very classic. But to each their own. Most women I know do not want channel set diamonds. And I have a LOT of family in the NY area. And lived there for years.

If she's into very classic styles putting all your money in the center and doing a simple and classic solitaire might be a safer choice.

I'm not seeing anything about your soon to be fiance's preferences ??? I'm an average NY woman and I HATE channel set diamonds, I feel they immediately date a piece, and have the least amount of sparkle. I wouldn't be disappointed because I wanted bigger or better or more expensive but I WOULD be hurt if I had no input and ended up with something I HATED. The third ring is cool as a right hand ring, or a gesture ring before you two were ready to be engaged but many woman would be very put off by how much it DOES NOT look like an e-ring. I'm a bit of a cool, artsy, rock chick myself but my e-ring is elegant: the fun jewelry can go everywhere else !

I only have a half carat center myself, and we bought it second hand off e-bay, but It had been custom made, was certified, and I loved the design and I'm the one who has to wear it and love it everyday !

If you are not going to go with GOG or one of the other vendor on PS that can get you a lovely stone/setting at a decent
price than...

THE SECOND RING you posted would be my choice.

H-No to the third ring and the first one is well, just okay. Nothing to jump for joy about and who wants a ring like that?

Listen to thm because they know what they are talking about and won't steer you wrong. Been on this site for a few years and learned a lot of good info and I will never go to a B&M store ever again.

If you are willing to upgrade her so soon, then I would suggest (as someone already has) getting a beautiful diamond from GOG and putting it in a simple solitaire. It will look like an engagement ring and you really can't go wrong in terms of the style. You're also not wasting money on a setting that is just going to be replaced within a year. You can then upgrade later with GOG.

Again, you may be set on buying one of the three rings you posted. Upon closer inspection, I would choose the second one (although I am not liking how low the center diamond is set - it really takes away from the stone).

If you really like channel set, I'm sure GOG can find you something that looks a little more delicate (and less dated) and that showcases the center diamond more.

I am a stalker of diamond rings in that size/quality/ price range on e-bay and I feel pretty confident saying the going prices on e-bay for the rings you posted, with the limited details you posted would be APPROXIMATELY between $300 - $600. My personal opinion on the styles aside, they are a bad financial deal as well.

I agree with this. If you don't want to let the diamond experts here help you find a great stone and are going to pick one of the three you showed us, I like the second ring best. I think the second ring is the most attractive of the three choices by far. Good luck!
