I had a talk with my ex hubby about my wedding set. He is COMPLETELY okay with whatever I do with it. He said "After all..it is yours and you don''t HAVE to give it to Ripley (our daughter)".

The jeweller where we originally got it will trade it. I am just trying to figure out how to get my DBF out of the whole "your ex still paid for it" stigma. If we trade it in...we could get a less fancy ring and a nice wedding band for it. I just don''t like the thought of having a gorgeous diamond sitting in my JB wasting away. It NEEDS sun!!! Any thoughts welcome.

BTW....I never wear it...so why not make it into something I would wear, right? If I trade it for another diamond it will be just that...a different diamond altogether? Maybe I should just be awful and dishonest and tell my insurance company it was stolen

Well I would trade it in. Why not? If the marriage didn''t work out, I wouldn''t want to keep it. I''m a bit supersitious so I would be more inclined to think that the ring might have some bad luck attached to it.

So you think that having it around would be bad luck? Arg...I am a little creeped out now

Trade it in if you want a different stone, not because of it being a "bad luck" rock. You never know where any diamond you buy has been in the past or whose happiness or failed marriage it was a part of! The poor rocks have nothing to do with our relationships, they''re just pretty.

Soulsis,

That''s just me. I wouldn''t even give it to my daughter because I''d feel that it was bad luck for her marriage. But I''m a bit psycho when it comes to this luck/karma stuff. So do whatever feels comfortable for you.

I''d suggest selling it and putting the cash towards your daughters future education.
That way it''s being used for something positive and the stigma will be somewhat erased.

Where can you sell an engagement ring though? Other jewellers won''t touch it.

Some jewelers will place it on consignment in their shop for you. They of course will take a percentage of the sale, and who knows how long it may take, but that is an option.

Otherwise, I know here in CT there is a very reputable jewelry store that I have seen ads for saying that they buy diamonds and settings. But who knows how much they will pay.

Also, you can try finding a private buyer, but often this involves a lot of time and more aggravation than it is worth.

Finally, there is eBay, but you know that everyone who uses that is looking for a good deal, so expect very low bids and the usual potential for difficulties and near disasters

As for the topic itself, does it bother you if you were to use this diamond? I wouldn''t mind using the diamond myself, obviously finding a new wedding set for it. But that''s my personal preference. But I wouldn''t associate it was bad karma, but again, that''s little old me

I don''t think it would be bad luck...while the marriage didn''t make it, it sounds as if you have a child...which is probably a great thing, right!?!

And as for passing it to said child and having it be a bad symbol of a failed marriage, I personally would look at it as a ring that childs dad bought out of love.....and if I had a dad that I had a relationship with I would love to have something that he picked out. It woldl mean less ''ended marriage'' and more ''my dad bought me this ring and my mom was the holder of it until I got it''...but that is just my opinion, and I am a bit of a glass half full rosy tinted eyewear kind of person.

I don''t believe in the whole bad karma when it comes to jewelry and gifts from now-defunct relationships. After-all, that relationship resulted in your daughter, so a lot of good came from it! I sincerely wish I had my original e-ring, I would have loved to use those stones in a rhr.

btw I sold my e-ring to a so-called "diamond broker" for $1,000, and it was purchased for $3,400 and (over)appraised for $8,000 but I couldn''t get anyone to give me more $$ for it

I really think the best bet would have been to sell it to someone who wanted it or the stones for personal use...

A couple of years ago my MIL gave me her original e-ring diamond. She has been divorced from my FIL for over 10 years and is remarried. She wore the diamond in a really elaborate new setting from her new husband until she gave it to me (her new husband didn''t care; he used to say it saved him over $10,000

). She gave it to me when she got a new diamond. At first I thought of the bad karma associated with it but then I thought out of their marriage came my husband so their marriage obviously wasn''t all bad.

When my daughter is old enough (she''s only 2 now!) I will offer her the diamond for her e-ring.

Maybe I should just be awful and dishonest and tell my insurance company it was stolen.

Now THIS would bring you bad karma!

That and jail time.

I agree with what is stated above. It is a felony in most states for insurance fraud(and trust me it''s not worth the risk). Have it redesigned into a necklace/bracelet or who knows what your future love life may be in the future. Best of luck!

Not only it would be harder to sell to a third party (instead of trade-in to the same jeweler), but allot of money will be lost too.

Just make sure the new diamond from the trade in does not get to touch the old on in it''s way to the deep, dark vault.
Make sure both you and the jeweler wash your hands between handling the two

C''mon ! It''s just a waste of perfectly good diamond to throw it away. The past doesn''t get away regardless... no reason (IMO) not to let a small part of that past make a positive contribution

Sure there must be allot more positives. Nice to add one to the count

Has everyone lost their sense of humour? Ha ahahhaha. I would NEVER do that. I said I want to be "married" and not "buried". Can''t do that in the slammer.....well, actually I guess you can!

O.K., if you believe that bad karma and enegy is associated with the diamond, why don''t you burn sage around it and clear it of it''s energy. I have a friend who is very into those types of things and I think that is the solution for these types of "bad energy" matters.

Then you have a beautiful stone "clear" of bad energy that you can wear or pass down.

Also, it might hold much more sentimental value to your daughter some day than it does to you.

Let us know how it turns out

I like the idea of passing it down to your daughter. The ring symbolized your union with your ex and out of that union came your beautiful daughter. If there were no daughter, I would say that you should sell/trade. I would make something else out of it though like a pendant to give your daughter. And burn some sage just in case. I had never heard of that!
