BF and I've been together for a year and we've already started talking marriage, but our timeline depends a lot on where we are in life (we're both in law school and we're waiting to graduate and start our jobs, so that we have income and can get past the first year of working in NY and staying sane). But he knows I love gems and jewelry (and he knows all about PS!) and that thanks to PS, I have definite ideas on what I'd like as far as style, etc. We were in NY this past weekend interviewing and we stopped by Tiffanys and Cartier and I actually tried rings on! Wow, what a great experience! I liked the classic Tiffany way more than just looking at pictures, and the Novo was stunning, although I think it overpowered my finger (we were looking at the 1.65-1.85 ct range). I also LOVED the Cartier setting (as I thought I would!), although I think the diamond in the Tiffany setting popped out at me more (I think the Tiffanys ones were a little bigger though). One of the funniest moments was when, at Tiffanys, we asked to look at a D and a G to compare colors, and the woman hands them to me, saying "oh you can't tell at all". I looked at them, definitely could tell a difference (only because of the side-by-side), and when I gave the correct answer, she was definitely surprised! BF said he thinks the saleswomen were a little surprised that I actually knew about diamonds

BUT - although I know engagement won't happen for a while (esp. in this economy), I was really excited that he was interested (HE actually knows a TON about diamonds now, lol) and wanted to know what I liked and that he was thinking about this as a realistic possible purchase!

So thank you for listening! Yay!

EDIT: Should this have gone in Hangout? Sorry if it's the wrong forum!

And...I hope he doesn't find this!

That sounds like so much fun! And I''m envious that you got to try on Cartier rings--was it the 1895 setting? That''s my favourite Cartier.

Yup it was the 1895 - I love that setting! It was so elegant - although I think the prongs were a little too big for my taste (and BF''s). I reassured BF though, that he could get the prongs as unobtrusive claws if he goes for one of the Leon designs that are similar

Yay! That sounds like a great field trip! How exciting!

OOOOOOOOOO fun!! Tiffany is my favorite and FF may possibly get me that very setting from Tiffany or another one. (I hope!) It''s gorgeous!!!!! It looks even better on the hand. And I love the knife edge....very classic! Glad you had fun!!!!!

From a fellow law student, any excuse to try on rings at Tiffany''s or Cartier''s is a great one, LIW status is irrelevant!

Sounds like you had a great time and affirmed your love for designer diamonds. Good job on picking apart the different color grades - I''m sure they get their share of clueless consumers and were surprised that you could tell the difference between a D and a G.

ILuvCarats, wouldn''t it be great if all our elementary school field trips had been to Tiffanys??

Dreamgirl, that''s so exciting! I hope when you get the ring you''ll come back to share pictures! Although definitely, pictures don''t do it justice to seeing it on your hand!

Indygirl, I agree! I loooved the experience - although BF and I are on the same page that we''d rather go for getting the diamond separately (he knows all about WF and GoodOldGold by now) and going to Leon or Mark Morrell for the setting

(I can''t decide on which one yet though - fortunately there''s lots of time for flip-flopping)

Ohhhh - GOG & WF are very reputable around these parts, as well as Leon and MM. I might use them one day when SO & I decide to take the plunge but I think my heart is set on a Ritani or a piece a la diamondnut or mara

But Im certain it will still be quite a while from now...The ring is so much better on hand than in the case too! lol

You will have to keep us updated.
