Not sure of pricing

I like the frankenring and was thrilled when it was done but it’s too flashy for me. I really am a simple gal who likes small stones. The problem is that I don’t know how to price it. 18kt setting from a local jeweler (bought with a dark sapphire - I overpaid for sure). Replaced with a sapphire from Gemfix (I bought it in person - Andrew is so kind!) - the stone was 3k - and set by David Klass (he cleaned up the prongs to make them less obvious). What’s a fair price? The diamonds are okay but not near PS quality. All together it’s a pretty look, though. I don’t have any documentation on the stone because I thought I’d never sell it. If it’s worth a decent amount, I’ll part with it. If not, I’ll pull it out twice a year. Any thoughts? Thanks!

What it’s worth is what someone is willing to pay you for it. Maybe list it at what your idea of a fair price is and take it from there. If no bites, lower the price until you are no longer comfortable doing so. I sell a lot of my pieces to fund new purchases and I have found that they can linger a long time—so if you are in no hurry—no problem. If you want a quick sale, you will lose a lot of money.

Thanks @nala. I figured that might be the answer. I wouldn’t be in a hurry, just don’t want things sitting around that could bring some $ for me and enjoyment for others. It’s a shame to have it sit in a drawer.

Hi @eapj -

If this is any help -

I normally would price a piece like that at 80% of what you paid for the colored center + 80% of what you paid for the sides, and I'd throw in the setting for free. My prices tend to err on the low side, but they also always sell and, once I've set a price, I don't drop it.

Good luck!

Super helpful. Thanks, @mrs-b!

Agree with @nala . I've had things sit for many months and then suddenly it gets multiple inquiries and sells. I remember one time, I saw someone who needed the money keep lowering her price - finally, I said "I'll take it rather than see you give it away". Later, she bought it back and months later decided to sell it again. She reposted it at 50% more and it sold right away. It's often a matter of the right buyer coming along.

The thinking about how I price things is more arbitrary:

First, I try to put myself in the buyer's shoes and ask "If I were looking for something like this, what would I pay for it pre-loved (vs new)?" That is usually my starting point. I think @mrs-b 's advice makes sense for your piece given the details provided on what you paid

Sometimes, I will discount that price further if I think it is something that I think will be harder to sell or I truly just want to get rid of it...but that isn't the case for you as there is demand for nice 3-stone blue sapphire rings.

Finally - I always have in my mind a bottom price...which is the price at which I'd rather keep or give it away to someone I know...which I think is where your head is at now.

For me, there is sometimes little or no difference between the first and final number.

(Some people price higher with the expectation that people will try to negotiate. I don't do that but having these three figures in my head helps me to be firm and take the emotion out of any decision making when they do).

Can you provide any details on the diamonds--color, size, clarity?
I would probably price it based on the replacement cost of the components times 2/3 and see if there is any interest. You should be able to find a comparable setting for comparison.
If it was something like a Tiffany or name brand setting and super high quality diamonds---maybe 80% of replacement cost.
It's really beautiful and a classic style so I think it should be relatively easy to sell.

It is a classic three stone with a beautiful sapphire, I do think it would sell if you're ready to let it go and set the price at roughly two-thirds cost of the GemFix stone and comparable diamonds.

What are the diamond side-stone diameter and specs?

What size is the ring?

@marymm - the diamonds measure about 4.3mm so maybe about .25 ct each? I don’t have specs but looking through the loop my untrained eyes see decent stones, one with more defined cutting than the other. For color, I don’t see tint so maybe G? H? In that neighborhood? Not too helpful, I know! When Andrew at GemFix looked, he indicated they were decent, so not great but that they do contribute to the overall look and don’t detract from it. I think he guesstimated maybe SI. It’s a size 4.5.

Thanks for everyone’s comments! They were all very helpful. I decided to list it to see if someone else can get some use out of it. That sapphire is too pretty to sit in a jewelry box 363 days of the year. Darn my penchant for really small stones! When I took a video outside, I was reminded of how that blue pops!
