So, I am shopping for a gift for my friend''s bridal shower. She lives in NYC and is registered with a very cute lingerie store. I pick out what I want and then ask for my total. The total is exactly the purchase price, no tax. I remind the salesgirl this would *not* be shipped to me in CA, so what is the sales tax?

Answer: Nada. No tax. My total was under $110 and any clothes or shoes in NY under $110 has no sales tax. Say WHAT?! I didn''t know. That''s awesome. I was totally surprised. Maybe in NYC anything less than $110 is too small to care about. Wow, wish we had that here in CA!!

I asked her if there were any special no tax rules on jewelry but she didn''t think so.

Who knew? NYC is cool.

It''s been more than a decade since I lived in Philly but when I lived there, there was no tax on clothes either. THAT was fun.

I think Minnesota doesn''t charge sales tax on clothes either, so cool. Wish Illinois didn''t, I HATE paying sales tax!

Yeah, and it is 8.75% in Chicago to make it even worse!

Yup, it''s true on clothing in NY, because it''s considered a "necessity". That''s also why they cap it at $110 because they assume that anything over that isn''t necessary.

Massachusetts and Minnesota don''t have sales tax on clothes either, HEAVEN!

HA! Tell that to my Hermes scarf habit...

Yes, they finally made it permanent, because here in NY they tried to stimulate sales during school time, and gave that same discount of sales tax every season for back to school shopping. Then they realized that for the price of a PATH train ticket or a tunnel fare, people where headed to NJ to shop at the SAME stores for far less tax on many items... no to stimulate the shopping in NY they made it permanent. Thank God!

When my friend found out, he went to THomas Pink and proceeded to buy his ties (one at a time) before leaving back to London where the Euro is beating the dollars behind... So many people are shopping in NY now and returning to Europe, and this tax thing is a real boon... :)

Hey, any little bit helps!

No sales tax in NY on food either. But geez, when you do have to pay it...

And lower tax on some services too!

You and me both Nicrez. I have a decent size collection - about 14 of them. Some I have had for so long! I was out of the habit of using them, but somehow I have gotten back into it after this long hiatus. Nope, the NY $110 tax limit would not help you there. But still, it would be awfully nice! I buy plenty of items for less than that and certainly would buy them one at a time like your friend did at Pink. Very funny, but well worth it.
