I also posted in Proposal Ideas, but wanted to see if anyone here had any ideas.

I have the ring, now I just need to finalize the proposal.

My girlfriend and I are traveling to NYC from the West Coast a few days before Christmas. I have never been to the city and she lived there for a few years. She absolutely loves the city and this trip is a way for her to show me around. Anyway, we have spoken about getting engaged, but my response has been we need a little time to get things in order. She has accepted this response and has no idea I plan on asking during our trip.

So, now is the difficult part. Since I do not know much about the city, she''s going to be the one planning most things. I tend to be more spontaneous then she is, so I am thinking I can use this when we are there as this wouldn''t cause much of an alarm. Kind of like the kid who sees something shiny and wants to go see what it is as.

We are staying near Central Park as this is her favorite place in the city. I do not want to do it in a carriage due to the possible smells. Also, she does not like huge crowds so probably not anything too public. With this being the case, I think the Rockefeller Tree is out, Empire State Building and the other "touristy" proposal spots.

I want to propose before dinner and then go to a romantic restaurant. It will be out first day there so we will be going throughout the city all day.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for proposals in the city, not too public, maybe near or including Central Park? Is there anything that has live piano, violin or similar music? I want to try and take into account the weather possibility as well.

Thank you for all the help.

Central Park is a pretty vast place with lots of open spaces, and also lots of little nooks and crannies where you could wander off and be very private if you wanted. I can''t really direct you to a specific spot because I''ve wandered through so many times I''m not sure where those nooks are anymore...but I''m sure any casual walk through the park will yield at least an option or two...

Also, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is located right on the East Side of Central Park (esp. if the weather''s not cooperating)...they have many many smaller size galleries where you could tuck away and propose...maybe with only a few people around, maybe none, depending the time of day and which gallery you''re in...

I know you said the Empire State Building is out, but I believe Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is smaller in terms of space and I''ve heard it''s not as crowded in terms of the number of people up there.

I''ll try and think of more ideas and update as I think of them!

My finance :) proposed at the Top of the Rock! I have to say it is breathtakingly beautiful, and they will take your picture at the top (there are three levels) so maybe you could do it there and that way you would have someone to photograph it for you. There is inside and outside and you can see so much from both places. good luck and congrats...it is a wonderful place to get engaged and very exciting :)

This is a popular place to propose. It really depends whether you want a public one or private one. A unique one or is it more about backdrop (with some people among you as a result).

I like the idea of Central Park, there are so many special pockets. I can''t suggest a specific spot, maybe others can. Bryant Park is nice as well (and more manageable) but right now overtaken by ice rink and xmas shops. Steps of Met sounds romantic. So many.
Honestly the whole idea of it sounds romantic, she''s a lucky lady.

I understand this part, but I was just thinking...what if you have the Carriage take you somewhere. I know someone in the Proposal Ideas forum just proposed to his girlfriend in Chicago by taking her on a horse-drawn carriage ride which dropped them off at Buckingham Fountain and that''s where he proposed. Perhaps you can do something of the like, or he can perhaps offer insight on "potential smells" as you call them...

Thank you for the insights. This past weekend she told me about how her favorite spot in Central Park is the Cherry Hill area. Therefore, I think we will go and a walk and I will then pop the question. Thank you again for all of the help.

RE: the carriage rides.

My SIL told me that lots of NY'ers don't like the carriage rides or the business, because apparently the horses are horribly malnourished. Just something to think about since you said that she used to live there. Right?

I posted over in your other thread in "Proposals, etc." I got engaged in the middle of Times Square when there was hardly anyone around. New York is an incredible place, and it will make for the trip of a lifetime.

Food for thought: Remember to take pictures throughout your ENTIRE trip. My DH didn't propose until our last night there, but he made sure that we took pictures at everything we did, so that I would have a book of things to look back on after the proposal.

I still look back at all of them to this day. Incredible trip!

Hello again. So, here is what I''m learning towards. I''ve taken many different items and put them together.

She has no problem with the horses and any smells so the carriage ride could be involved?

We pick up a carriage near, which I will have reserved. This will take place just before sunset. The carriage takes us around and as we approach Cherry Hill, we hear a sax playing. Just as we get there, the sax player starts a new song that just so happens to be one of her favorites. I act surprised, which wouldn''t be hard, and say we should get out to listen. As we get out to listen and take in the view I then propose. Once I am finished someone arrives with champagne and flowers. Finally, the carriage leads us out of the park and we head to dinner.

So my questions are:
Will Central Park be too gray and sad looking the week before Christmas?
If this is her favorite part of the city, should I make it even more special by proposing there or let her have other memories of it?
I''ve gotten some other ideas about locations, so should I make a totally different location memorable?

Thank you for all of the help.

Hi

I can''t speak for what central park will look like in December however as to whether you should let her have other memories of her fav place? My thoughts are if I told my SO about a special place and he not only remembered it but went to the trouble of arranging the most special day ever to be in that location I would be over the moon!

I think its a lovely idea.

There is no guarantee for what CP will look like that time of year..sure it might be gray, might be sprinkling/snowing or a crisp sunny day--I don''t think it really matters. You''ll be bundled up and Xmas will be in the air! Honestly this is one of the most romantic proposals I''ve heard (or maybe it''s b/c I get to hear your/the guy''s train of thoughts), she is a v. lucky lady and I didn''t know guys like you existed!!! I lived in NY 8yrs and never seen Central Park the way she''s about to. I think there will be no issue with this new memory tainitng her existing memories of that spot--are you kidding me??? It''s so touching you are making such efforts, really it''s fantastic and please don''t forget us after..updates and pics would be so nice!

If it was me getting proposed to in Central Park, I would NOT care about the weather....that would be the last thing on my mind.

This is a sweet, romantic and perfect proposal....you can''t control the weather so don''t worry about it!

Well, the carriage and sax player are booked. Now just need to figure out the song. Thanks for all of the help and I''ll let you know how it goes. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Excellent, NDSWMR!!! Best of luck to you!!! She''ll be blown away, rest assured!

My husband proposed in COlumbus Circle- right outside of Central Park. We are New Yorkers, and our first date was in the park, and we got married there! FYI- I think this is one of the best kept secrets in NYC, but to get married in Central Park only costs $25. You pay that for the permit, and you fill out the application online. So easy. If you want to get married in the Conservatory Gardens it is only $400, plus a $100 for a photography permit. We got married right outside of Belvedere Castle, and it was amazingly Gorgeous. SOrry for the minor threadjack! Good luck with the proposal. I''m sure she will love it!

My brother lives in the city, and a friend of his proposed at the Brooklyn Bridge. I saw pictures, and it was quite pretty. Although it would probably be quite crowded, you would have a beautiful view.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a great idea. THe Museum of Modern Art is also very nice, there are the beautiful impressionist galleries, and if you went during the day, it probably wouldn't be that crowded.

ETA: I just saw that you have an idea planned out out, and it sounds very romantic. Good luck!
