odd ears - gasp!

Gals (well, and guys too if you have both ears pierced!) what to do, what to do???? Dh is planning to get me some studs for my 40th birthday (

) and we''re thinking between 1 and 1.5ctw.... but my ears were pierced by a vandal (when I was in my late teens). I live in greeny/black cultured pearl studs and you can see one is def. higher than the other. When I tried on the CZs to get an idea of size, it''s even more apparent. I guess this is to do with the fact that the pearls are round and the bezel set CZs sit closer to the ear.

Aaaanyhow... what to do? I asked a couple of pals and they agreed they could see a clear difference.

Do I get the lobe I least like, re pierced? Can you put two holes so close together

- it''s about 1-2mm out? I can''t let them close since I''m not sure how long that would take and I really would feel weird going around in just one earrring, no matter how small.

Do I get the backs made differently so that there''s compensation for the height of the holes? But then what happens when the earring spins?

Questions, questions...... what do you all think? (We''ve got until November!!)

What about getting drop earrings instead of studs? This way, would it be less noticeable as they''re not as close to the ear?

Hey there, I have a similar problem, although mine don''t sound as obvious. I got my ears pierced a loooong time ago, when I was 5. The girl who pierced them did the same thing, she didn''t line it up correctly, and I have uneven holes. The only time I can really tell a difference is when I''m wearing studs instead of drop earrings.

I would recommend getting one of the holes repierced. Have it pierced close enough to the previous hole so that when you wear earrings 1. the holes on each ear will be in the same place and 2. when you wear an earring in the newly pierced ear, it will cover up the previous hole.

I had about several hole in my ears when I was younger...did it myself and it was quite stupid. However you can place hole as close together as you like. If you want to job done 100% right I would go to a pericing studio. They will pierce your ears differently then a place at the mall will/can. The people are also trained to answer questions just like you are asking. Good Luck!

I don''t have any great suggestions, but wanted to commiserate. My left earlobe is just a bit differently shaped than my right. Not as fleshy somehow. And of course the department store that pierced my ears also got the hole about 2mm farther back on the left side than the right. I figure it''s not too tragic, and can''t be bothered to change it after 20 years. No one is going to be eyeing both my ears that closely at exactly the same time.
I think when I have daughters and get their ears pierced, I''ll either mark the spots myself with a surgical marking pen, or go to a proper piercing studio.
Hope it works out for you if you do get the hole redone!

I had a friend that had the same problem. She got the hole stiched up and then repierced. HTH.

I thought that if you didn''t wear earrings in the holes for a long time, that they will grow back together.

You could always wear clip-ons in the mean time.

After being pierced for twenty years I doubt that they would close up. Does anyone know the correct answer to this?

I think they will reclose eventually, but it will take time. It won't happen over a couple of months. It also depends on the person. Some people can leave theirs out longer than others. But, I'd ask a Dr. Mine were pierced by my Dr. when I was 14 and he marked my ears with a marker and asked my mom and a nurse to make sure they were even. I think the younger your ears are pierced, the greater likelihood they'll be uneven as you grow. Your head is something like 75% of it's adult size at age 5, but growns pretty rapidly as an infant, and genetics decide the size and assymetry of your ears and lobes. No body is symmetrical. So, if a piercing starts out just a little uneven, it can get worse as you grow. I'd consult a Dr about repairing the difference. But, unless your hair is short and someone is looking straight at you, they might not be able to tell that your earrings are uneven. You could always tilt your head!

Once again, I think Momoftwo is right. My sister-in-law (born in Italy, raised in France) had pierced ears most all her life if not all her life. She is older now (16 years older than my husband) and doesn't want to bother with earrings anymore. She let the holes close up and one could not tell that her ears had ever been pierced.

There are so many clip-on pearl earrings that you could wear anything you liked until you were ready to repierce the one ear you were letting close up. (What I would do is to wear one pierced earring to bed every night in the ear I did not want to close up!)

Thanks for the responses, very kind to offer suggestions. Hmmm, really not a 'danglies' girl. I love the look of solitaire studs, thin bezel set.

I'll look into repiercing. I just had a rather naaaasty image in my mind of two holes in file paper, hole-punched too close and merging into one!!!!

I'm a very lucky girl to have such a nice problem to resolve! But hey, it does make you think about getting your daughter's ears pierced exactly right. I was fully grown, I think very late teens. It was just badly done!

I took my daughter to my dermatologist to have it done. (I had had mine pierced there not too long before. It was done right!)
