This was asked in another thread.
A well cut oec holds up well with ideal cuts and better than gia ex steep/deeps at not showing color for the same color rough.
This is mainly that the lower half/girdle facets angle under the table causes much of the color enhancement in a steep deep mrb, where the lowers are not very far under the table on an oec if at all.

This is another aspect of the properties discussed in this article.

Fascinating. In another thread (perhaps the same thread?), someone was asking how to determine, without seeing an OEC IRL, how well it performs. So, does this mean we’d be looking for an OEC with specific parameters to determine color or performance? Would the new and improved upcoming HCA tool help in this regard? Sorry for the ramble - just sorting through some loose ends in my sparkle/fire part of the brain.

Honestly the only way to do it is optical with some help from scopes.
You can have 2 on paper identical oec's with lets just say a 5% difference in star length, one could have edge to edge brightness and one not depending on the crown angle and upper girdle angle.
For aset of an oec expect more green than a mrb and be careful of blue centers as the might over react to obstruction and look like a donut up close.
They are awesome in pendants/earrings/tiara and crowns with the greater viewing distance but not so great in rings.
It really needs viewing in person to determine that.
It can look like a donut in a photo or video and knock your socks off in a ring because the camera is 3-10x+ more obstruction than you.
You will notice that modern cut oecs are going for red centers in ASET and IS but it is possible to be on the other side of blue and rock in a ring it depends on how much.

This is so insane to see a small decimal point difference in pavilion angle can make a big difference visually! Thanks for sharing. I always wonder in terms of hiding colors, which would be a better performer. This is super informative.

Karl that article was awesome - so so crazy how a minute change in angle is like driving off a light return cliff
