Woohoo! My guess was correct and tonight was the big night! It was such a rollercoaster day (which you can read about here if you haven''t already).
After the drama of the morning/early afternoon and me first feeling awful and then focusing on the positive, I headed down to visit FI (!!) for what I expected was going to be proposal-day. I knew the plan involved the sunset, the beach, and a bonfire, so on the drive down there I was just thinking about how nice and romantic and sweet it was going to be. As I was driving, I noticed that the wind was really blowing, but I thought it might be only in that area I was in at the time.
I got there before FI was finished with work, so I went to Macy''s to kill some time. After I was there for about 20 minutes, he called and said he was out of work and I should meet him at his house. I was feeling really excited as I drove to his place, and took note of the high winds once again. I parked my car and he was already outside waiting for me, and I got straight into his car because he said he wanted "to go to the Coach store in Carmel" to see if they had the shoes I''ve been wanting for a long time. Obviously I knew this was just an excuse to get us to Carmel Beach, so I didn''t question it. When I got into his car, I noticed that he had pre-programmed ALL of his "favorite" channels to the love song station on XM radio. It was pretty cute. That''s when I knew with 100% certainty that it was coming.
We got to Carmel and drove past the Coach store. I asked why he passed it, and he said we were going to park at the bottom of the little hill and walk back up. We ended up driving all along the beach and I knew he was looking for something/someone and apparently didn''t see it because then we drove back to the Coach store "because we don''t really want to walk that far." We went into the store and looked around, and at some point his phone rang. He looked at the display and I asked who it was, and he said he had no idea. He walked away to take the call, and I kept looking at the cute bags and was chatting with the salespeople. After a few minutes he came back, we made some purchases, and went back to the car. We drove back down to to the beach, parked the car, and got out. Well, it was EXTREMELY windy and the chill went all the way down to the bone. He wanted to get out and walk along the beach, so I said ok. In my head I was thinking there is no way in hell that a bonfire and a romantic evening could be had there because the wind was just too strong and it was too cold. The winds were so fast that sand was being picked up off the beach and was just flying all around.
Apparently I was right about it being too windy, because then he got another call on his phone and after that conversation we started walking back to the car. Well, at this point I knew that this plan had failed. I was sad because it was such a great idea, but also happy because for once it wasn''t me who completely ruined it! I couldn''t keep my mouth shut, and had bursting at the seams all evening wondering whether I should tell him or not that I knew what the plan was. On the walk back to the car, I opened my big mouth and asked simply "was it just too windy?" We had a fun, lighthearted conversation about the entire thing and I fessed up. He wasn''t angry that I had found out the plan, but he was really visibly upset that the plan didn''t end up working out. He was literally on the verge of tears, saying that he was really sad that everything kept getting messed up, and this isn''t how it was supposed to be, and he has been trying to make it perfect, and he didn''t want to make me keep waiting. I felt so bad for him and I reassured him that I didn''t blame him for the wind, obviously, it wasn''t his fault and his idea really WAS a good one.
We drove back to his house and just sat in the driveway for awhile. He was REALLY bummed out for awhile, then he said "stay there and close your eyes." I was suspicious, but I obeyed and he got out of the car and went to the trunk. He came back holding a wrapped present for me. I knew it was a shoe box, and I opened it and found the Coach shoes! He had apparently bought them for me the night before. I was ecstatic, and he made a comment to the effect of "well at least night wasn''t a complete loss."
After that we sat there for awhile, then he said he had an idea and started the car and we drove away. We ended up here, which is a place we like to go often to spend time together and check out the waves. Usually we grab a sandwich from somewhere and have a little picnic together out there, being romantic and whatnot. So we pulled up and got out of the car, and of course it was still super windy and even colder than before. Needless to say, we didn''t last long outside. We decided to get back into the car and climb into the backseat a cuddle while we watched the waves. It was really fascinating because the tide was really high and the sea was angry, and that is cool to see. Or maybe it''s just cool to me because I''m a total CA girl and absolutely love the ocean, but that''s another story.
Anyway, so we''re just cuddling there and watching the ocean. Then he said "OK sweetie, you need to sit up now." So I did, he took my hands, and he started saying the most wonderful things he has ever said to me. At that point I was thinking "OMG, is this actually happening in the backseat of a car?!" And then I thought "how perfect that this is happening here, like this, at a place we both love and associate with each other even though we can''t actually be outside because it so miserable out there." (Lol, all those things really DID go through my head.) So he kept saying these wonderful things, and then somehow ended up on one knee with the ring box out.
Of course I said yes, there was much happiness and even more cuddling there watching the waves and me trying to look at my gorgeous ring. The moment was just so happy, and he did end up surprising me after all because I didn''t think it was going to happen that day after the original plan was ruined. He kept saying he was just going to take some time and figure out something even bigger and better than the bonfire idea. Speaking of, he already paid for that idea (someone was going to come and set everything up for us, so it would be all ready when we got there) and apparently can''t get his money back, so we''re just going to use it as a nice engagement party/picnic together sometime soon. But yeah, I was not expecting it to happen after we left Carmel Beach.
Oh yeah, and my ring is absolutely amazing. I have never seen anything so perfect in my entire life.
