Nothing like someone diefying a person because they agree with them.. sigh... I find it quite blaphmous that one would compare this "Cindy" to Jefferson.. Over dramatic and over hopeful... Blaphamous... yet not suprised

the reason i posted this was the reality of Jefferson''s writings and political position v. that of Adams. therein lies the interesting meat in this article..... cindy is almost a footnote in comparison to the writings re these two and what Adams was trying to turn this country into in its early days.... it is the comparison of the political situation of then to now that is the most disturbing. it is a reminder that democracy requires constant vigilance.

I don''t think that the article was about diefying Cindy Sheehan (where does it say that?) The most interesting was pointing out parallels with the current administration dealing with political opponents, those who have honest differences with them, and the press, with that of Adam''s administration

"
This is not new," Jefferson said. "It is the old practice of despots; to use a part of the people to keep the rest in order. And those who have once got an ascendancy and possessed themselves of all the resources of the nation, their revenues and offices, have immense means for retaining their advantage.
"But," he added, "our present situation is not a natural one." Jefferson knew that Adams'' Federalists did not represent the true heart and soul of America, and commented to Taylor about how Adams had been using divide-and-conquer politics, and fear-mongering about war with France (the "XYZ Affair") with some success. "

Okay, I know I''m going to get flamed for this but feeling pretty emotional.
Sacrifices... A friend of my husband (who serves) has lost 4 of his friends serving in Iraq this weekend. We are willing to send our troops over there to be killed so we can control their oil, but we as a people cannot "sacrifice" by using more energy efficient vehicles. Send our troops, just don''t take my SUV!
They are proposing new gas milage standards. From pressure from US car lobbies, Bush is excluding all large utility vehicles (large suvs, hummers, etc) from any proposed changes. That makes any new law pretty toothless. Are we the same people who went through WWII, had victory gardens, and got by on less for our troops? It''s not Cindy Sheehan who is not supporting our troops, but all of us who wear support our troops stickers on our SUVs.

Reading this over it sounds like my husband is serving. It is my husband''s friend who is currently serving in Iraq.

part gypsy,

i''m glad you read the article and understood the ''meat'' contained within it. your point is well made re what sacrifices are we as a people making. i saw an article about that last week: point of that article is that most people are more concerned about shopping than they are about the war in iraq..... the question was also raised whether it is appropriate for a war president to be taking a 5 week vacation....which, of course, might be better discussed in another thread.

i am very sorry for the loss of your husband''s friends.

Thank you for understanding the point I was trying to make. I guess I feel this sense of frustration or helplessness about it.
