So, I took my ring back to the jeweler. I talked to the bench who did the work. He asked why I didn't like the ring. I showed him the up close pictures of the sides. He assured me that my diamond was safe as is, but he would smooth out the prongs with more platinum to make it look better and more straight. He mentioned the "crease" where he built up the prongs could be smoothed out. Well, I guess we will see lol. The sales lady understood what I wanted, but didn't get to talk to the bench before he did it. She has had health issues which led to surgery. I showed her the picture, and she was upset. She said, "he is going to have to get a new head for you". Maybe the extra platinum will make me feel better until I get a whole new setting. I'll be posting a before and after later tonight.

How are they planning to give your current ring ‘ a new head’?

And is this temporary fix of adding more platinum (+ more labor) an additional cost to you?

I know you mentioned whole new setting - but that’s not what they mentioned- and throwing good money after bad is the vibe I’m getting.

@Rfisher and Karl_K, oh no, they won't get another penny from me! I think the sales lady meant a whole new 3 stone head to exactly fit my diamonds and shank. I can't wait to see the finished product lol. In the mean time, does anyone have ideas/pictures of a new, more petite ring ? (The bench is only going to smooth it over. Lol)

You can’t “put a new head” on this setting. These aren’t peg heads, you can’t just replace one. And you can’t replace the “area holding the three stones”, either - it’s all integrated into the shank.

You’re going to need a whole new mount. Unclear if that’s what your salesperson means…

@yssie, I think that's exactly what she thought, and I didn't know any better either. I'm going to need help on a whole new setting. I think I'm in the right place here to find one :)

@MissGotRocks, I agree! I feel like they would up charge me on the setting though, if I did order from them.

Well, it depends on the setting and who makes it. You wouldn’t find a well made three stone setting for $400 in platinum so of course there would be an up charge. However, I wouldn’t let them touch another piece of my jewelry. It is jewelers like these that give the industry a bad name.

@MissGotRocks , yes, I know it would be much more expensive for a whole new ring. I'm just saying that if they did "apply" the $400 to a new setting, the setting would be about $400 more than the regular price so they wouldn't lose any money. Lol

fingers crossed for you

@lovedogs I'm afraid it's too late for that. I'm about to go pick up the ring in a bit. I'm sure I won't get a refund. But, I did learn a $400 lesson. I'll post a picture tonight, then plan on picking a new setting somewhere else.

@Daisys and Diamonds, Got my ring back. I can't tell any difference at all. Thank you all so much for your help!

@Angie3, I'm sorry about this whole thing...do you think the jeweler would put the $400 towards a new setting? I would normally say to go somewhere else but this would be a way to recoup your money. Or you could try to get your money refunded. It's just wrong to pay that much money and not even see a difference.

@junebug17, I doubt it. I can always ask.

@Angie, I do think it looks a bit better. It's never going to look perfect, the diamond is just too big for the setting. I understand you might not have the energy to engage with this jeweler anymore. David Klass does great work, he might be a good option for you for a reset.

I definitely wouldn't go back to them to give them anymore business.

Sidenote: It always confuses me when it's like the sales associate in the front has zero communication with the bench jeweler in the back. Maybe I've been spoiled or just plain lucky. But I (almost) always have gotten a courtesy call (usually from the SA) if the jeweler thinks something might not work or turn out that great after they've had a chance to really look into my project.

@junebug17, I really don't want to cause problems with the bench. I do know him, and a nice lady that works there. The owner, however, I don't want to contend with. She has several of her own stores, and is often at one of her other stores. She kind of made a surprise visit from the back. She priced the "repair" on the spot. An online jeweler sounds great.

She did call me. She was very upset that the job was done before she got to speak with the bench. She had just had surgery and was going to call bench from home. I told her to just take care of herself and not to worry about it. The owner was there and knows what I wanted.

@junebug17, could you give me instructions to get in touch with him?

@Angie3, I have never worked with him so I can't help out too much on this...he has a facebook page with this email listed [email protected] and this phone number 213-489-4569. Not sure how current these are but you can try. He's also on Instagram and has an etsy store, you can probably contact him that way.

Aw, that sucks. Hope she's doing ok.

If you're "ok" with the setting as is, would you consider it as a temp setting until you find something else that'll fit better?

@anastasiabeaverheusen, yes, I'll have to. I can't "un-see" it now! Lol I do have a plain, 4 prong solitaire setting that holds a 1ct. I could go back to that for awhile. I do love a simple solitaire.
