Hi there! I’m just a regular person not involved in jewelry buying. But wondering if someone could help me out on something if I post a picture. I have a gold and garnet necklace given to me when I was a teenager. I have no idea where it came from or if it had any value. Not sure it’s worth paying to have it fully appraised or not.

Sure -- post away and you'll get responses. The better the photos (front and back), the better the responses. Suspect that you'll need to be more specific than "when I was a teenager" -- since that could have been last week or the 40's!

I am 36 now so I’ve had it for at least 20 years and I don’t think it was new when it was purchased either. But again I know nothing about it. Tried to take some photos here.

Would you also take a look at the clasp carefully - there should be a metal hallmark stamped there - and then post here what you find, along with a photo of the clasp and stamp if possible. Sometimes clasp designs and/or metal karat can be useful in dating a piece.

By the way, the necklace is lovely! I hope you wear it sometimes.

I believe one side says 14K and the other says Mexico? With what appears to be dice? And 14K again I think is stamped on that side too. Unfortunately in the 20 years I’ve had I’ve never worn it. It’s been in a box the entire time. I do not wear yellow gold.

Actually it maybe double dominos or double dice. Either way I have not been able to find much online regarding the hallmark.

It is a beautiful necklace. Most people get appraisals for one of two reasons. The first is because they want the item insured and the insurance company requires it, the second is for selling purposes. So unless your interests fall into either of these two categories an appraisal really doesn't do much except satisfy curiosity.

It looks like it is a good gold weight and the price of 14k gold per gram is about $24. So if you want a scrap value you can take it to any of those "we pay for gold and silver" shops. They will weigh it and offer you scrap value. That gives you the baseline of the lowest value of your necklace. Next you can search Etsy, Ebay, Ruby Lane and other selling sites to search out similar necklaces to see what people are listing them at and in the case of Ebay you can search what similar items actually sell for.

Are you interested in selling it? Loupetroop and Diamondbistro are very good sites to sell on if you are. If not, it might be a nice gift for a family member.
