Hello everybody
I am surprised every day that the cushion old mine cut I bought a few months ago seems to be more brilliant and sparkling than many other old cut or even modern cut I can see. My stone is really very plump and deep, I should have thought that the extra height and depth would have been brilliancy-killers rather than the reverse. There seems to be really no light leakage despite the bad proportions. Any opinion ? Thank you !

The light return from an old cut such as the OMC is very different from that of a modern RB. The modern round has more even light dispersion, but the chunky light return from a well cut OMC or OEC is very eye catching. The best lighting for viewing this is candlelight. Those wonderful old cuts perform at their charming best in romantic soft lighting such as candlelight, morning sunlight, and my personal favorite...christmas tree lights!

Post a pic!!!

You are quite right Diamondangel. Strange, when you come to think of it, that these stones were at their best precisely under the lightings used in the times when they were cut...
Sometimes my stone makes me think of a drop of dew in a sunny dawn. There's only light left, and the outlines vanish... Fiery still soft...
I don't have the right camera at home, but I'll ask a friend and send a pic ASAP.

Aren't they gorgeous! I think of my OMC as shimmering more than shining. It's really a lovely look.

First time user here.

I presented my girlfriend with my Great-Grandmothers/Fathers 111-year old OMC, on Friday. She still can't believe such a gorgeous, cherished, precious (no pun intended) stone now sits upon her hand. (BTW- She said "Yes".)

The thing we've noticed- is that the sparkle and color it exudes is absolutely brilliant. It's 1.51 c, but looks like 2+. It radiates and sparkles wonderfully, and in the bright light of day looks like a mini-flashlight beaming from her finger! Will try to get some pics if anybody cares.

Whatever it is about OMC's, they certainly do offer a different look than many other stones we've seen. The fact that it originally belonged to both my first AND middle namesakes ... makes it all the more special. I plan to read up, and learn about what makes an OMC an OMC.

Ciao-

Here is a good page I put together about the Old Mine cuts.

Enjoy readying and learning more about them.

You get broader flashes with the Old Mine cuts, they have a different look about them and a lot of history.
